1 This is a copy of the letter that Jeremiah sent to those who would be taken captive into Babylon by the king of Babylon, so as to prophesy to them according to the warning he had received about them from God. “Because of the sins which you have sinned before God, you will be carried away into the captivity of Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.	1 À cause des péchés que vous avez commis devant Dieu, vous serez déportés à Babylone par Nabukodonozor, roi des Babyloniens.
2 And so, having been taken into Babylon, you will be there many years and for a long time, even to seven generations, yet after this, I will lead you away from there with peace.	2 Une fois arrivés à Babylone, vous y resterez de nombreuses années: le temps de sept générations; mais après cela je vous en ferai revenir sans dommage.
3 But now, you will see in Babylon gods of gold and of silver, and of stone and of wood, carried upon shoulders, an awful display for the peoples.	3 Vous verrez à Babylone des dieux d’argent, d’or et de bois qu’on transporte sur les épaules et qui inspirent la terreur aux païens.
4 See to it, then, that you do not in effect become like these strangers and become afraid, so that in awe you would be carried away into their midst.	4 Prenez garde de ne pas imiter ce que font ces étrangers, ne partagez pas leur crainte
5 And so, seeing the turmoil, behind you and in front of you, as they are worshiping, say in your hearts, ‘You ought to be adored, O Lord.’	5 lorsque vous verrez la foule se presser devant et derrière ces idoles pour les adorer. Dites alors vous-mêmes: “C’est toi, Maître, qu’il faut adorer.”
6 For my angel is with you. And I myself will examine your souls.	6 Mon ange est avec vous, il veillera sur votre vie.
7 For their tongue is polished by the craftsman, and they themselves are even inlaid with gold and silver, yet they are false and unable to speak.	7 Un ouvrier a poli leur langue; ils ont beau être couverts d’or ou d’argent, ce n’est que du toc: ils ne peuvent pas parler.
8 And, just like a virgin who loves to decorate herself, so do they take up gold and make designs with it.	8 Mais on fait des couronnes d’or pour la tête de ces dieux comme on en ferait pour une fille qui aime se parer.
9 Their gods have crowns of certified gold upon their heads, from which the priests subtract gold and silver, and spend it on themselves.	9 Il arrive que les prêtres volent à leurs dieux cet or et cet argent; ils s’en servent pour eux-mêmes et pour les prostituées qui sont dans leur temple.
10 Moreover, they even give from it to prostitutes, and use it to adorn kept women, and when they receive it back from the kept women, they use it to adorn their gods.	10 On habille ces dieux comme si c’étaient des hommes mais ce n’est que de l’argent, de l’or ou du bois. C’est pourquoi ils ne peuvent se défendre de la rouille ni des vers.
11 But these cannot be freed from rust and moths.	11 Quand on les a vêtus de pourpre, on lave leurs visage car ils prennent dans le temple une bonne couche de poussière.
12 Although they are covered with a purple garment, they must wipe off their face, because of the dust of the house, which is very great around them.	12 Le dieu porte un sceptre, comme un gouverneur de province, mais il ne fera pas mourir celui qui l’a insulté.
13 Yet he who holds a scepter like a man, like the judge of the region, cannot put to death one who sins against him.	13 Un autre a dans sa main droite une épée ou une hache, mais il n’en fera rien, ni à la guerre, ni contre les voleurs.
14 And though he holds in his hand a sword and an axe, yet he cannot free himself from war and robbers. From this let it be known to you that they are not gods.	14 Cela prouve bien qu’ils ne sont pas des dieux; ne les craignez donc pas.
15 Therefore, do not fear them. For just as the vessel a man uses becomes useless when broken, so also are their gods.	15 Une cruche brisée ne sert plus à personne: leurs dieux qui trônent dans leurs temples sont tout aussi inutiles.
16 When they are set up in a house, their eyes are full of dust from the feet of those who enter.	16 Ils ont les yeux remplis de la poussière qu’on soulève en entrant.
17 And like one who has offended the king and is surrounded at every door, or like a corpse about to be carried to the grave, so do the priests secure the doors with bars and locks, lest they be plundered by robbers.	17 On ferme soigneusement les portes sur celui qui a offensé le roi ou sur un criminel condamné à mort. C’est tout pareil pour ces dieux: les prêtres défendent leurs temples par des portes, des serrures et des verrous afin qu’ils ne soient pas dépouillés par les voleurs.
18 They light candles to them, and in great number, and still they are unable to see, for they are like logs in the house.	18 Ils leur allument des lampes, beaucoup plus de lampes qu’eux-mêmes n’en utilisent, mais le dieu n’en voit pas une seule.
19 It is truly said that the creeping things, which are of the earth, gnaw their hearts, and yet when these devour them and their garments, they do not feel it.	19 Le dieu n’est qu’une poutre de plus parmi les poutres de la Maison, et même on se dit à l’oreille que tout son intérieur est rongé par les termites; les vers sortent du sol pour manger le dieu avec ses vêtements, mais lui ne sent rien.
20 Their faces are made black by the smoke that is made in the house.	20 Leur visage noircit car il y a beaucoup de fumée dans le temple.
21 Over their bodies and over their heads fly owls and swallows and birds, and similarly, even cats.	21 Sur leur corps et sur leur tête se perchent les hiboux, les hirondelles et les autres oiseaux, même les chats y grimpent.
22 From this you should understand that they are not gods. Therefore, neither should you fear them.	22 Vous voyez donc bien qu’ils ne sont pas des dieux; ne les craignez pas.
23 Furthermore, the gold which they have is shiny, but unless someone wipes off the rust, they will not shine. And even when they were molten, they did not feel it.	23 On les a recouverts d’or pour les faire beaux, mais l’or ne brillera pas si personne ne les nettoie; d’ailleurs ils n’ont rien senti quand on les fondait.
24 They acquire all kinds of costly things, yet there is no breath in them.	24 On les a sûrement achetés très cher, mais dedans il n’y a pas d’esprit.
25 Without feet, they are carried upon shoulders, showing their unworthiness to all men. And so, may those who worship them be confounded.	25 Comme ils n’ont pas de pieds, on les porte sur les épaules: quelle honte pour eux, et devant tant de monde! Et quelle honte aussi pour leurs adorateurs quand le dieu tombe à terre: il faut le relever!
26 Because of this, if they fall to the ground, they do not get up by themselves; and if someone sets it upright, they will not stand firm on their own; yet, just like the dead, offerings are placed next to them.	26 On le met sur pieds, il ne bougera pas; on lui donne un choc, il ne se redressera pas: on peut bien leur faire des offrandes comme on ferait pour des morts.
27 The priests themselves sell their sacrifices, and they spend it wastefully; and, in like manner, their wives take part of it, never sharing anything with the sick or the beggars.	27 Les prêtres ramassent les victimes offertes en sacrifice; ils en vendent une partie et leurs femmes salent le reste, mais elles ne donnent rien au pauvre ou à l’infirme: est-ce que ce sont vraiment des offrandes? Même les femmes qui viennent d’accoucher ou sont en état d’impureté y touchent.
28 Fertile and menstruous women contaminate their sacrifices. And so, knowing from this that they are not gods, you should not fear them.	28 Vous voyez donc que ce ne sont pas des dieux: ne les craignez pas.
29 For what reason are they called gods? It is because the women serve before the gods of silver and gold and wood,	29 Comment pourrait-on les appeler des dieux? Même des femmes présentent les offrandes à ces choses d’argent, d’or et de bois.
30 and the priests sit in their houses, with torn garments, and their heads and beards shaven, and nothing on their heads.	30 Dans leur temple, les prêtres sont assis avec des habits déchirés, la tête et la barbe rasée et sans rien sur la tête.
31 But they roar, shouting out to their gods, just as at a feast for the dead.	31 Ils poussent des cris épouvantables devant leurs dieux comme certains le font lors d’un repas funéraire.
32 The priests take away the garments of their gods, and clothe their wives and their sons.	32 Les prêtres leur retirent leurs vêtements, et puis ils en habillent leurs femmes et leurs enfants.
33 And whether they endure evil from someone, or good, they are not able to repay it. They can neither establish a king, nor remove him.	33 Qu’on les traite bien ou mal, ils sont incapables de rendre la pareille, tout comme ils sont incapables d’établir un roi ou de le renverser.
34 Similarly, they can neither give riches, nor avenge evil. If anyone makes a vow to them, and does not keep it, they cannot require it.	34 Ce ne sont pas eux qui donnent richesse ou argent. Si on ne tient pas un vœu qu’on a fait, ils ne réclament pas.
35 They cannot free a man from death, nor rescue the weak from the strong.	35 Ils n’arrachent pas un homme à la mort, ils ne délivrent pas le faible de la main du puissant,
36 They cannot restore sight to the blind, nor free a man from need.	36 ils ne rendent pas la vue à l’aveugle, ils ne sauvent pas de l’épreuve.
37 They will not have mercy on the widow, nor do good to orphans.	37 Ils n’ont pas compassion de la veuve et n’aident pas l’orphelin.
38 Their gods of wood, and of stone, and of gold, and of silver, are like stones from the mountain; and those who worship them will be confounded.	38 Ces morceaux de bois couverts d’or et d’argent ne valent guère mieux que les roches de la montagne, et ceux qui les adorent se couvrent de ridicule.
39 In what way, then, is it to be supposed or said that they are gods?	39 Comment pourrait-on croire que ce sont des dieux, et pourquoi les appelle-t-on dieux?
40 For even the Chaldeans themselves do not honor these, who, when they hear about a mute, unable to speak, they offer him to Bel, asking from him that he may speak,	40 Les Kaldéens eux-mêmes les déshonorent: ils voient un muet qui ne peut parler, ils le conduisent à Bel et lui demandent de le faire parler! Comme si le dieu était capable d’entendre!
41 as if these, who are unable to move, would be able to perceive. And even they themselves, when they shall understand this, will abandon them, for, having come to their senses, they do not consider them to be gods.	41 Des gens qui réfléchissent sont incapables d’abandonner des dieux qui ne savent pas penser!
42 Yet the women, wrapped in cords, sit by the roads, burning olive-stones.	42 On voit dans les rues des femmes qui brûlent du son, assises, une corde nouée autour des reins.
43 And when any one of them, having been attracted by someone passing by, would sleep with him, she reproaches her neighbor because she was not found worthy, as she was, nor was her cord broken.	43 Lorsque l’une d’elles s’est fait cueillir par un passant et a couché avec lui, au retour elle reproche à sa compagne de n’avoir pas eu cet honneur et de n’avoir pas sa corde brisée.
44 But all things that occur with them are false; in what way, then, is it to be considered or said that they are gods?	44 Tout ce qui tourne autour de ces dieux n’est que mensonge, comment donc pourrait-on croire ou affirmer que ce sont des dieux?
45 Yet they have been made by the workmen and the goldsmiths. They will be nothing else but what the priests want them to be.	45 Des artisans et des orfèvres les ont façonnés, et ils ne sont rien d’autre que ce que ces ouvriers ont voulu qu’ils soient.
46 For the artisans themselves, who make them, do not exist for a long time. So then, can these things, which have been made by them, be gods?	46 Si ceux qui les ont faits n’ont pas pour longtemps à vivre, comment des choses faites par eux pourraient-elles être des dieux?
47 Yet they have bequeathed falsehoods and disgrace after this to the future.	47 Ils ne laissent à leurs descendants que mensonge et ridicule.
48 For when they are overcome by battle or evil, the priests consider among themselves where they may hide themselves with them.	48 Si une guerre survient, ou quelque malheur, les prêtres discutent entre eux pour savoir où se cacher avec leurs dieux.
49 Therefore, why would they be perceived to be gods, who can neither free themselves from war, nor rescue themselves from evils?	49 Comment donc ne comprennent-ils pas que si on ne peut se sauver soi-même de la guerre ou du malheur, on n’est pas Dieu.
50 For, in as much as they are only wood, inlaid with gold and silver, so let it be known henceforth, by all nations and kings, that they are false; because it has been revealed that they are not gods, but the work of men’s hands, and there is no work of God in them.	50 Plus tard on reconnaîtra que ces morceaux de bois doré et argenté, ne sont que mensonges; il deviendra évident pour toutes les nations et pour tous les rois, qu’ils ne sont pas des dieux mais seulement l’œuvre des humains, et que Dieu n’agit pas à travers eux.
51 For this reason, then, it has been accepted that they are not gods, but are works of the hands of men, and no work of God is in them.	51 Quelqu’un n’est-il pas encore convaincu que ce ne sont pas des dieux?
52 They have not raised up a king in the region, nor will they give rain to men.	52 Ils sont incapables d’établir un roi sur un pays ou de donner la pluie aux hommes.
53 They will not discern a judgment for anyone, nor will they free a region from injury, because they can do nothing, like crows in the middle of heaven and earth.	53 Ils ne savent discerner ce qui est juste, sauver celui qui souffre de l’injustice; ils sont aussi inutiles que des corbeaux entre ciel et terre.
54 And, indeed, when there happens to be a fire in the house of these gods of wood, silver, and gold, the priests will certainly run away and save themselves, but these will truly be burned up like logs in the midst of it.	54 Si un feu se déclare dans la Maison de ces dieux de bois, doré et argenté, leurs prêtres y échappent par la fuite, mais eux se consument avec les poutres au milieu des flammes.
55 Yet they cannot withstand a king and war. In what way, then, is it to be considered or accepted that they are gods?	55 Ils ne résisteront pas à un roi ou à une armée ennemie:
56 These gods of wood and stone, inlaid with gold and silver, can free themselves neither from thieves nor from robbers; whoever is stronger than they are,	56 comment donc peut-on supposer ou croire que ce sont des dieux?
57 will take up these things, the gold and the silver, and the garments which cover them, and will get away; neither will they be able to help themselves.	57 Ces dieux de bois doré et argenté ne peuvent échapper aux voleurs ni aux brigands, ceux-ci sont plus puissants qu’eux; ils arrachent l’or et l’argent et prennent les vêtements qui les couvrent sans qu’eux-mêmes puissent se défendre.
58 Therefore, it is better to be a king displaying his power, or a useful vessel in a house, about which he who owns it will boast, or a door in the house, which keeps safe what is inside, than to be these gods of falsehood.	58 Mieux vaut un roi qui montre sa puissance, ou même une cruche qui sert au maître de maison, que n’importe lequel de ces faux dieux; mieux vaut une porte de maison qui garde les choses de l’intérieur, ou une colonne de bois dans un palais royal, que qui que ce soit de ces faux dieux.
59 For the sun, and the moon, and the constellations, though they are brilliant and have been sent forth to be useful, are obedient.	59 Le soleil, la lune et les étoiles qui brillent à notre service, obéissent à Dieu.
60 Similarly, the lightning, when it appears and is evident, and, in like manner, the wind blowing in every region,	60 De même l’éclair si beau à voir, ou le vent qui souffle sur toute la contrée;
61 and the clouds, when God orders them to make their rounds over the whole world, each carries out what was commanded.	61 ou encore les nuages: quand Dieu leur ordonne de parcourir toute la terre, ils font ce qu’on leur a commandé; de même le feu envoyé d’en haut pour consumer montagnes et forêts: il fait ce qui lui est commandé.
62 Furthermore, the fire, having been sent from above so that it may consume mountains and woods, does what it has been instructed to do. Yet these are not similar, neither in splendor, nor in power, to any one of them.	62 Mais ces objets de bois ne peuvent pas se comparer, ni pour la beauté, ni pour la puissance.
63 From this, it should neither be supposed, nor said, that they are gods; since they are neither able to give judgment, nor to accomplish anything for men.	63 S’ils sont incapables de rendre la justice et de faire du bien aux gens, il ne faut pas croire que ce sont des dieux, ni même les appeler dieux.
64 And so, knowing that they are not gods, therefore, have no fear of them.	64 Vous saurez donc que ce ne sont pas des dieux et vous ne les craindrez pas.
65 For they can neither curse kings, nor bless them.	65 Ils ne peuvent ni maudire, ni bénir les rois;
66 Besides, they show no signs in heaven to the nations; they neither shine like the sun, nor give light like the moon.	66 ils ne font pas dans le ciel des signes que les nations puisent voir, ils ne brillent pas comme le soleil, ils ne donnent pas de lumière comme la lune.
67 Beasts are better than they are, for they can flee under a covering, and so protect themselves.	67 Les bêtes valent mieux qu’eux, car elles peuvent s’enfuir et sauver leur vie.
68 Therefore, in no way is it clear to us that they are gods; because of this, you should not fear them.	68 Ainsi donc, de quelque manière que ce soit, il est évident pour nous que ce ne sont pas des dieux: vous ne les craindrez pas.
69 For just as a scarecrow in a cucumber field protects nothing, so are their gods of wood, and silver, and inlaid gold.	69 Ces dieux de bois doré ou argenté ne protègent pas plus qu’un épouvantail dans un champ de concombres.
70 They are just the same as a white thorn in a garden, on which all the birds sit; they are even like a corpse thrown out into the darkness, just so are these gods of wood, and inlaid gold, and inlaid silver.	70 On ne peut les comparer qu’à un buisson d’épines dans un jardin où tous les oiseaux se posent, ou à un mort jeté dans un lieu obscur.
71 By the purple, and likewise the Royal purple, moth-eaten garments upon them, you will then know that they are not gods. And finally, they themselves are consumed and will be a disgrace in the region.	71 Il vous suffit de voir pourrir sur eux la pourpre ou l’écarlate pour comprendre que ce ne sont pas des dieux; eux-mêmes finissent par être dévorés et le ridicule retombe sur leur pays.
72 Better is the just man who has no such images, for he will be far from disgrace.”	72 Mieux vaut en définitive l’homme droit qui n’a pas d’idole: nul ne lui prendra son honneur.
