Sirach 33

1 No evils will befall one who fears the Lord. Instead, God will preserve him during temptation and will free him from evils.	1 Le malheur ne recherche pas celui qui craint le Seigneur; s’il connaît l’épreuve il en sera racheté.
2 A wise man does not hate the commandments and the justices, and so he will not be thrown about violently, like a ship in a storm.	2 L’homme sage ne déteste pas la Loi, celui qui ne la suit qu’en apparence est comme un bateau dans la tempête.
3 A man of understanding puts his faith in the law of God, and so the law is faithful to him.	3 L’homme intelligent met sa confiance dans la Loi; pour lui la Loi est digne de foi comme une réponse divine.
4 Whoever would resolve a dispute will prepare a word, and so, having prayed, he will be heard. And he will observe discipline, and then he will respond.	4 Prépare ton discours et tu seras écouté: fais une bonne synthèse, et ensuite parle.
5 The heart of a fool is like the wheel of a cart. And his thoughts are like a turning axel.	5 Les sentiments du sot sont comme une roue de chariot, ses raisonnements font la girouette.
6 A friend who is a whisperer is like an untamed horse: he neighs under anyone who sits upon him.	6 Un ami moqueur est comme un étalon excité, il hennit sous n’importe quel cavalier.
7 Why does day follow after day, and light follow after light, and year follow after year, in accord with the sun?	7 Pourquoi tel jour est-il plus important qu’un autre, puisque tous les jours reçoivent la lumière du soleil?
8 By the knowledge of the Lord, they were arranged, after the sun was made, in keeping with his command.	8 Une décision du Seigneur les a faits différents, lui qui a disposé les fêtes et les saisons.
9 And so, the seasons changed, with their feast days. And according to them, they celebrated the feast days, in their hour.	9 Il a élevé et sanctifié certains d’entre eux; les autres il les a pris pour faire nombre.
10 Some of them, God exalted and magnified. And some of them, he set amid the ordinary days. And all men are from the ground, and from the earth, from which Adam was created.	10 Les hommes aussi sont tous tirés du sol, et c’est de la terre qu’Adam fut formé.
11 With a mulititude of disciplines, the Lord has distinguished them and diversified their ways.	11 Le Seigneur pourtant, dans sa sagesse universelle, les a séparés, les plaçant sur des chemins différents.
12 Some of them, he has blessed and exalted. And some of them he has sanctified and placed close to himself. And some of them, he has cursed and brought low, and he has turned them from their station.	12 Il a béni et exalté certains d’entre eux, il les a consacrés et pris à son service; d’autres, il les a maudits et abaissés, il leur a fait perdre leur place.
13 Just as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so as to form and to shape it,	13 Comme la glaise est dans la main du potier qui la modèle à son goût, ainsi les hommes sont dans la main de celui qui les a faits: il traite chacun comme il le juge bon.
14 so are all his ways in accord with his dispensation, and so is man in the hand of the One who made him. And he will repay him according to his judgment.	14 D’un côté le mal, de l’autre le bien; d’un côté la mort, de l’autre la vie: et de même le pécheur face au fidèle.
15 Good is against evil, and life is against death; so also is a sinner against a just man. And so should you consider all the works of the Most High: two and two, and one against another.	15 Regarde d’ailleurs toutes les œuvres du Très-Haut; elles vont par deux, l’une s’opposant à l’autre.
16 And I awakened at the very end, and I was like one who gathers grapes after the grape-gatherers.	16 Quant à moi, j’ai veillé après tous les autres, semblable à celui qui grappille derrière les vendangeurs.
17 I, too, have hoped in the blessing of God. And I have filled the winepress like one who gathers grapes.	17 Mais par la bénédiction du Seigneur je suis arrivé en tête et j’ai rempli de grappes le pressoir.
18 Consider how I have not labored for myself alone, but for all who are seeking discipline.	18 Comprenez que je n’ai pas peiné pour moi seul, mais pour tous ceux qui cherchent le savoir.
19 Listen to me, you great ones, with all the peoples. And incline your ears, you rulers of the Church.	19 Écoutez-moi donc, grands du peuple; prêtez l’oreille, vous qui présidez l’assemblée!
20 You should not give authority over yourself to a son or wife, to a brother or friend, in your life. And you should not give your estate to another, lest perhaps you may regret it, and then you would be begging for the same.	20 Ni à ton fils, ni à ta femme, ou à ton frère ou ton ami: à aucun ne donne pouvoir sur toi durant ta vie! Ne donne pas tes biens à un autre; tu pourrais le regretter et devoir les redemander.
21 While you are still living and breathing, let no one among all flesh change you.	21 Tant qu’il te reste un souffle de vie, ne livre à personne ta liberté.
22 For it is better if your children petition you, than if you look toward the hands of your children.	22 Il vaut mieux que tes enfants dépendent de toi plutôt que d’avoir toi-même à les supplier.
23 In all your works, be pre-eminent.	23 Garde la responsabilité de tout ce que tu fais, ne permets pas que d’autres tachent ta réputation.
24 You should not allow a blemish upon your glory. On the day of the consummation of the days of your life, at the time of your passing, distribute your inheritance.	24 Au jour qui conclura les jours de ta vie, quand sera venue l’heure de ta fin, alors tu répartiras l’héritage.
25 Fodder and a rod and a burden are for a donkey; bread and discipline and work are for a servant.	25 Pour l’âne: le fourrage, le bâton et les fardeaux; pour le serviteur: le pain, les corrections et le travail.
26 He works under discipline, and he seeks rest. Allow his hands to be idle, and he seeks liberty.	26 Travaille sur ton esclave et tu auras la paix; relâche-lui la bride et il voudra la liberté.
27 The yoke and the strap bend a stiff neck, and continual labors bend a servant.	27 Le joug et le licol font plier le cou; pour le mauvais serviteur, les châtiments et les chaînes.
28 Torture and chains are for a malevolent servant; send him to work, so that he may not be idle.	28 Mets-le au travail, qu’il ne reste pas oisif, car l’oisiveté enseigne le mal.
29 For idleness has taught much evil.	29 Fais-le travailler selon sa capacité, et s’il n’obéit pas mets-lui des fers aux pieds.
30 Appoint him to a task. For this is fitting for him. And if he will not be obedient, bend him with chains. But you should do no more than any flesh can bear. Truly, you should do nothing grievous without judgment.	30 Mais ne sois trop exigeant envers personne, ne fais rien sans discernement.
31 If you have a faithful servant, let him be to you like your own soul. Treat him like a brother. For you have obtained him by the blood of your soul.	31 Si tu as un domestique, qu’il soit comme un autre toi-même, puisque tu l’as acquis par le sang.
32 If you harm him unjustly, he will turn away and flee.	32 Si tu as un domestique, traite-le comme un frère, puisque tu as besoin de lui comme de toi.
33 And then, when he lifts himself up and departs, you will not know whom to ask, or in what way to seek him.	33 Si tu le maltraites et qu’il prenne la fuite, où iras-tu le chercher?
