1 He who loves his son will frequently chastise him, so that he may be happy in the very end, and not grope for the doors of his neighbors.	1 - Chi ama il suo figliuolo, gli è sempre addosso con la sferza, perchè possa rallegrarsi della sua riuscita, e quegli non abbia a picchiare alle porte de' vicini.
2 He who instructs his son will be praised over him and will glory in him, in the midst of his household.	2 Chi castiga il suo figliuolo, avrà a lodarsi di lui, e tra i conoscenti se ne glorierà.
3 He who teaches his son will make his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends, he will glory in him.	3 Chi istruisce suo figlio, fa geloso il nemico, e davanti agli amici se ne glorierà.
4 When his father has died, it will be as if he were not dead. For he will have left behind someone who is like himself.	4 Muore il padre di lui e quasi non muore; perchè dopo di sè lascia uno che gli rassomiglia.
5 In his life, he saw him and rejoiced in him. And at his passing, he was not sorrowful, nor was he confounded in the sight of his enemies.	5 Durante la sua vita lo vede e n'ha consolazione, e in morte non si rattrista, nè ha da arrossire in faccia a' nemici.
6 For he left behind himself a defender of his house against his enemies, and someone who will repay his friends with kindness.	6 Lascia invero un vendicatore della sua casa contro i nemici, e uno che mostrerà riconoscenza agli amici.
7 For the sake of the souls of his sons, he will bind up his wounds, and at every voice, his gut will be stirred up.	7 Chi vezzeggia suo figlio, fascerà le sue piaghe, e a ogni grido [di lui] si turberan le sue viscere.
8 An untamed horse becomes stubborn, and a child left to himself becomes headstrong.	8 Un cavallo non domato diventa intrattabile, e un figliuolo abbandonato a sè, diventa un rompicollo.
9 Coddle a son, and he will make you afraid. Play with him, and he will make you sorrowful.	9 Accarezza il figliuolo e ti farà paventare, scherza con lui e ti rattristerà.
10 You should not laugh with him; otherwise you may have grief, and in the end, your teeth be clenched.	10 Non ridere con lui, perchè tu non abbia a piangere insieme, e, da ultimo, a digrignare i denti.
11 You should not give him power in his youth, but you should not despise his thoughts.	11 Non gli lasciar libertà nella gioventù, e non chiuder un occhio sui suoi capricci.
12 Bow down his neck in his youth, and slap his sides while he is a child, lest perhaps he may become stubborn, and then he will not trust you, and so he will bring sorrow to your soul.	12 Piega la sua cervice nella gioventù, e rompigli le costole mentr'è fanciullo; perchè non divenga caparbio e ti si ribelli, e tu n'abbia strazio di cuore.
13 Instruct your son, and work with him, lest you give offense by his shameful behavior.	13 Educa tuo figlio e affaticati intorno a lui, per non incappare nella sua turpitudine.
14 Better is a healthy pauper with a strong constitution, than a wealthy man who is weak and afflicted by maladies.	14 Meglio un povero sano e vigoroso di forze, che un ricco cagionevole e flagellato dal male.
15 A healthy soul with the sanctity of justice is better than all the gold and silver. And a sound body is better than immense revenues.	15 La salute dell'anima, nella santità della giustizia, vai più d'ogni oro e argento, e il corpo robusto più d'una ricchezza immensa.
16 There is no revenue above the revenue of a healthy body. And there is no delight above a joyful heart.	16 Non c'è ricchezza che superi quella della salute del corpo, e non c'è piacere superiore alla gioia del cuore.
17 Death is better than a bitter life. And eternal rest is better than continual sickness.	17 Meglio la morte che una vita amara, e il riposo eterno che una malattia ostinata.
18 Good things hidden in a closed mouth are like seats at a feast placed around a grave.	18 Le buone cose profuse a una bocca chiusa, son come le offerte di vivande poste sur una tomba.
19 What benefit is there in an offering to an idol? For it can neither eat, nor smell.	19 Che giova l'oblazione a un idolo? esso invero non mangerà e non sentirà l'odore!
20 So is he who flees from the Lord, carrying the wages of his iniquity.	20 Cosi colui ch'è perseguitato dal Signore, e porta la pena della sua iniquità.
21 He sees with his eyes and groans, like a eunuch who embraces a virgin and sighs.	21 Vede con gli occhi e geme, come l'eunuco che abbraccia una vergine e sospirai
22 You should not give your soul to sadness, and you should not afflict yourself by your own counsel.	22 Non abbandonar l'anima tua alla tristezza, e non t'angustiare co' tuoi pensieri.
23 The gladness of the heart is the life of a man, and it is a treasure of sanctity without defect. And the exultation of a man is length of life.	23 L'allegria del cuore è la vita dell'uomo, e un tesoro inesausto di santità, e l'esultanza dell'uomo è longevità.
24 Take pity on your own soul by pleasing God, and show self-restraint. Gather your heart into his sanctity, and drive sadness far away from yourself.	24 Abbi pietà dell'anima tua, rendendoti accetto a Dio, e sii continente: raccogli il tuo cuore nella santità di lui, e caccia lungi da te la tristezza.
25 For sadness has killed many, and there is no usefulness in it.	25 Molti invero ha ucciso la tristezza, e non c'è utilità in essa.
26 Envy and anger will diminish your days, and pensiveness will bring old age before its time.	26 invidia e l'ira abbreviano i giorni, e vecchiaia anzi tempo arrecan le cure.
27 A cheerful and good heart is like a feast. And its feasts are formed by diligence.	27 Un cuor liberale e contento bada alla tavola: i suoi pasti infatti son preparati con cura.
