Sirach 16

1 You should not rejoice in impious children, if they are successful; nor should you take delight in them, if the fear of God is not in them.	1 Non ti rallegrare d'aver molti figlioli, se son cattivi, non te ne compiacere, se non hanno il timor di Dio.
2 You should not approve of their life, nor should you look with favor on their labors.	2 Non confidar nella loro vita, non far assegnamento sulle loro fatiche.
3 For one child who fears God is better than one thousand impious children.	3 E' meglio avere un figliolo solo, ma timorato di Dio, che mille figlioli cattivi.
4 And it is better to die without children, than to leave behind impious children.	4 Ed è meglio morir senza figlioli, che lasciarne degli empi.
5 By means one person with understanding, a country will be inhabited. The tribe of the impious will become desolate.	5 Uno solo, ma intelligente, popolerà la patria; la tribù degli empi sarà sterminata.
6 Many such things my eyes have seen, and greater things than these my ear has heard.	6 Molte di queste cose le han viste i miei occhi, e le mie orecchie ne han sentite maggiori di queste.
7 In the synagogue of sinners, a fire will blaze forth; and amid an unbelieving people, wrath will flare up.	7 Il fuoco divamperà nell'adunanza dei peccatori, e l'ira scoppierà sopra la nazione incredula.
8 The giants of antiquity did not obtain pardon for their sins; they were destroyed by trusting in their own abilities.	8 Non placarono Dio per i loro peccati gli antichi giganti, che furon distrutti perchè confidavano nella loro forza.
9 And he did not spare the place of Lot’s sojourn, and he abhorred them because of the arrogance of their words.	9 Dio non risparmiò quelli che abitavano con Lot, e li ebbe in esecrazione per la superbia delle loro parole.
10 He did not take pity on them, destroying an entire people, who even extolled themselves concerning their sins.	10 Non ebbe compassione di loro, sterminò tutta quella nazione che si vantava dei suoi peccati.
11 And this was so with six hundred thousand men, who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts. And if even a single obstinate person had escaped unpunished, it would be a wonder.	11 E lo stesso fu dei seicentomila uomini uniti nella durezza del loro cuore. E se ce ne fosse uno solo ostinato, sarebbe miracolo se andasse impunito.
12 For mercy and wrath are with him. He is powerful in forgiveness, and he pours forth wrath.	12 Perchè in Lui v'è la misericordia e l'ira, può placarsi e dare sfogo allo sdegno.
13 As is his mercy, so also is his correction; he judges a man according to his works.	13 Come la sua misericordia è il suo castigo; giudica l'uomo secondo le sue opere.
14 The sinner, in his violations, will not escape; but the patience of the One who shows mercy will not be diminished.	14 Non la scamperà il peccatore colle sue rapine, e l'attesa del misericordioso non sarà ritardata.
15 Every mercy will make a place for each man, according to the merit of his works, and according to the understanding of his sojourn.	15 Ogni misericordia darà a ciascuno il posto secondo il merito delle sue opere e secondo il modo con cui ha inteso il suo pellegrinaggio.
16 You should not say: “I am hidden from God,” or, “Who, from on high, will take note of me?”	16 Non dire: « Mi nasconderò a Dio, e chi di lassù si ricorderà di me?
17 or, “Among a great number of people, I will not be noticed. For what is my soul amid such an immense creation?”	17 In mezzo a tanto popolo non sarò riconosciuto; e che è l'anima mia in tanta immensità di creature? »
18 Behold: the heavens, and the heaven of the heavens, the abyss, and the entire earth, and the things that are within these, will be shaken by his gaze,	18 Ecco, il cielo, e il cielo dei cieli, l'abisso, tutta la terra, e ciò che è in loro tremeranno alla sua presenza,
19 together with mountains and hills, and the foundations of the earth. When God casts his gaze upon them, they will be struck with trembling.	19 e tutti i monti, e i colli e i fondamenti della terra, se Dio li rimira, tremeranno atterriti.
20 And concerning all these things, the heart is without understanding; but every heart is understood by him.	20 E dopo tutte queste cose il cuore è insensato, ma da lui son veduti tutti i cuori.
21 And who will understand his ways, or the tempest, which no eye of man will see?	21 E le sue vie chi le comprende? Come la procella, che l'occhio umano non vedrà mai?
22 For many of his works are concealed. But who will announce the works of his justice? Or who will endure them? For the testament is far from some persons, and the examination of each thing is in its end.	22 Il più gran numero delle sue opere son nascoste, e lo opere della sua giustizia chi potrà spiegarle? chi sostenerle? Il patto è lungi da parecchi, ma alla fine si fa il giudizio di tutti.
23 Whoever diminishes the heart, thinks empty thoughts. For the imprudent and erring man thinks up foolishness.	23 Chi ha poco cuore pensa a cose vane, e l'uomo imprudente e fuor di strada pensa a follie.
24 Listen to me, son, and learn the discipline of understanding, and attend to my words in your heart.	24 Ascoltami, o figlio, e impara gli insegnamenti della prudenza, stai attento con il tuo cuore alle mie parole.
25 And I will speak with equity about discipline, and I will strive to announce wisdom. So attend to my words in your heart, and I will speak with equity of spirit, about the virtues that God has set within his works from the beginning, and I will announce his knowledge in truth.	25 Dirò con ponderazione gl'insegnamenti, cercherò di spiegarti la sapienza. Stai attento con il tuo cuore alle mie parole, che dico coll'equità dello spirito le maraviglie che Dio ha sparse nelle sue opere fin da principio: secondo verità annunzio la scienza di Dio.
26 With the judgment of God, his works have been done from the beginning; and from their institution, he himself distinguished their parts and set their beginnings, in their kinds.	26 Secondo il giudizio di Dio furon fatte le sue opere da principio, e insieme coll'essere ne distinse le parti, e le principali secondo la loro specie.
27 He has beautified their works unto eternity. They have neither hungered, nor labored, and they have not ceased from their works.	27 Ordinò in eterno le loro operazioni: senza bisogno di ristoro, senza stancarsi, non hanno mai cessato d'agire.
28 Neither will any one of them cause anguish to his neighbor, forever.	28 In eterno nessuna darà impaccio all'altra.
29 You should not be incredulous at his word.	29 Non essere incredulo alla sua parola.
30 Afterward, God looked with favor upon the earth, and he filled it with his goodness.	30 Dopo di questo Dio mirò la terra e la ricolmò dei suoi beni.
31 The soul of every living thing brought word from before his face, and their return again is to him.	31 Ciò dimostrano tutti quelli che vivono sulla sua superfìcie, e di nuovo tornano alla terra.
