1 For your judgments, O Lord, are great, and your words are indescribable. Therefore, undisciplined souls have wandered astray.	1 Grandi sono li giudicii tuoi, Signore, e le parole the sono inenarrabili; per questo le anime non addottrinate errarono.
2 For, while they managed to convince the unjust, so as to obtain dominion over the holy nation, they themselves were fettered with chains of darkness and of endless night, enclosed in their houses, fugitives of everlasting providence, lying in ruins.	2 Quando egli è mostrato per falsi argomenti alli iniqui, che possono signoreggiare la gente santa, poi legati con legami di tenebre, e rinchiusi sotto i tetti, i fuggitivi delle perpetuali providenze giacerono.
3 And, while they thought to escape notice in their secret sins, they were scattered under a dark veil of oblivion, being horribly afraid, and having been disturbed with great astonishment.	3 E mentre ch' elli si pensavano nascondere nelli oscuri peccati, sono dispersi per lo velamento della dimenticanza, spaventati orribilmente, e turbati con soperchia ammirazione.
4 For neither did the cave which enclosed them preserve them from fear, because descending noises disturbed them, and the sorrowful persons appearing to them intensified their fear.	4 Nè la spelonca, nella quale elli erano, li conservava sanza paura; però che il suono che discendeva turbava coloro, e persone tristi, che apparivano a coloro, facevano loro paura.
5 And, indeed, even fire had no strength to provide them light, nor could the clear flames of the stars illuminate that horrible night.	5 Il fuoco per nessuna potenza sua dare potea loro lume; nè le fiamme delle stelle potevano alluminare quella spaventevole notte.
6 Yet there appeared to them a sudden fire, filled with fear; and, having been struck with the fear of that face which is unseen, they considered those things which they did see to be worse,	6 Appariva loro uno subito fuoco, pieno di paura; e percossi per la paura, temeano più quelle cose che non vedeano, che quelle che vedevano.
7 and, having been ridiculed, the illusions were removed from their arts along with their contemptuous rebuke of glorious wisdom.	7 E li schernimenti dell' arte magica vi erano apposti; e lo castigamento della gloriosa sapienza era contumelia.
8 Indeed, those who promised to drive away fears and disturbances from a languishing soul, though they were filled with derision, were themselves languishing in fear.	8 Però che coloro, li quali promettevano di scacciare le paure e le tribulazioni dell' anima languente, questi medesimi languivano con ischernimento, pieni di paura.
9 And, even if nothing unnatural disturbed them, yet being agitated by the passing of animals and the hissing of snakes, they died of fear, denying what they themselves saw even in the air, which no one thinks to be able to escape.	9 Però che eziandio se nulla delle cose, che mostravano contra natura, perturbavano loro, nientemeno per li trapassamenti delli animali, e per lo soffio delli serpenti commossi, tremanti morivano; e diceano ch' elli non vedeano l' aere, il quale niuno puote schifare per alcuno modo.
10 For, while there may be apprehension with wickedness, it gives testimony to condemnation, for a troubled conscience always forecasts harshness.	10 (Frequentemente le cose pessime, che debbono venire, spaventano li malvagi uomini, riprendendoli la coscienza per le loro cose malfatte). Conciosia cosa che la malvagità sia piena di paura, dà testimonianza della condannagione (di ciascuno); la crudele coscienza, turbata, sempre presume.
11 For fear is nothing else but unfaithfulness to thinking helpful things.	11 La paura non è altro, se none (uno adiutorio di) presunzione di pensiere d'aiutorii.
12 And, while expectation is driven from within, the cause of this is supposing that one is great in knowledge, and as a result, conflict excels.	12 E infino che dentro è il minore aspettamento, si computa maggiore potenza di quella cagione, della quale presta tormento.
13 Yet those who were truly powerless that night, being overcome by both the vilest and the deepest hell, were sleeping the same sleep,	13 E coloro li quali vennero dalli profondi e infimi lochi (sopravegnente), e dormendo sopravenente la impotente notte,
14 sometimes stirred up by the fear of unnatural things, other times sinking down in disgrace of soul, for a sudden and unexpected fear overcame them.	14 alcuna volta erano battuti dalla paura della visione spaventevole, alcuna volta l'anime loro venivano meno per ismarrimento; però che la improvisa e insperata paura era sopravenuta loro.
15 Then, if any among them had fallen away, he was kept in a prison without bars which had been left open.	15 Appresso, se alcuno di quelli cadeva, era guardato in carcere, rinchiuso senza ferri.
16 For if a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker in a field of labor were suddenly overcome, he endured an inescapable necessity.	16 E se alcuno di villa o pastore o lavoratore di terra fosse preso, si sosteneano nella necessitade di non potere fuggire.
17 For they were all bound together with one chain of darkness. Or if there were a whistling wind, or the sweet sound of birds among the thick tree branches, or the force of water rushing excessively,	17 Tutti erano legati insieme d' una medesima catena di tenebre. O fosse spirito soffiante, o tra li spessi rami il suave suono delli uccelli, o vero di fiume molto corrente acqua,
18 or the strong noise of rocks crashing down, or the scattering of playful animals having been seen, or the strong voice of bellowing beasts, or the resounding of the highest mountain echo, these things made them sink down because of fear.	18 o fortissimo suono di rovinanti pietre, o corrimento invisibile di animali scherzanti, o fortissima voce di mugghianti bestie, o fusse resonante suono delli altissimi monti, facevano tramortire per paura coloro.
19 For the whole world was enlightened with a clear light, and none were being hindered in their labors.	19 Tutto il mondo era illuminato di chiarissimo lume, e da non impedite opere era contenuto.
20 But then, the heavy night was placed over the sun for them, an image of that darkness which was about to overcome them. Yet they were more grievous to themselves than was the darkness.	20 A coloro soli era posta la grave notte, imagine di tenebra che dovea venire sopra coloro. Elli medesimi erano adunque a sè gravi tenebre..
