1 And this was the text of the letter: “Artaxerxes, the great king from India all the way to Ethiopia, to the leaders and generals of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces, which are subject to his authority, greetings.	1 In quella notte, avendo il re smarrito il sonno, comandò che si portasse il libro delle memorie de’ giornali; e quelle furono lette in presenza del re.
2 Although I have reigned over many nations and subjugated the whole world under my realm, I was by no means willing to abuse the greatness of this power, but to govern my subjects with clemency and leniency, so that they would settle into a quiet life, apart from any terror, and delight in peace, as all mortals would choose to do.	2 Ed in esse fu trovato scritto, che Mardocheo avea rivelata l’impresa di Bigtana, e di Teres, due eunuchi del re, de’ guardiani della soglia, i quali cercavano di metter la mano addosso al re Assuero.
3 Yet, in asking my counselors how this might be able to be accomplished, one who excelled the others in wisdom and fidelity, and who was second after the king, named Haman,	3 Allora il re disse: In qual maniera è stato Mardocheo onorato e magnificato per questo? E i famigli del re che gli ministravano dissero: Non gli è stato fatto nulla
4 explained to me that there was a people, scattered throughout the whole world, that used strange laws, and, acting against the customs of all peoples, despised the commandments of kings and violated the harmony of all nations with their dissension.	4 E il re disse: Chi è nel cortile? Or Haman era venuto nel cortile difuori del palazzo del re, per dire al re che comandasse che Mardocheo fosse appiccato al legno ch’egli avea apprestato per lui.
5 When we had learned this, seeing one nation rebellious against all mankind, having overthrown the usefulness of laws, and going against our orders, and disturbing the peace and harmony of the provinces subject to us,	5 Ed i famigli del re gli dissero: Ecco Haman, che sta aspettando nel cortile. E il re disse: Fate ch’egli entri.
6 we commanded that whomever Haman, who is chief over all the provinces, and second after the king, and whom we honor in the place of a father, whomever he would point out should be destroyed by their enemies, with their wives and children, and that no one may take pity on them, on the fourteenth day of the twelfth month Adar of this present year,	6 Haman adunque entrò, e il re gli disse: Che si converrebbe egli fare ad un uomo che il re volesse onorare? Ed Haman disse fra sè stesso: A cui vorrebbe il re fare onore, se non a me?
7 so that these guilty men, all on one day, may go down to the underworld, restoring to our empire the peace that they had disturbed.”	7 Ed Haman disse al re: Se il re volesse onorare alcuno,
8 And the effect of the letters was this: that all provinces would know and prepare for the prescribed day.	8 si converrebbero recare i vestimenti reali, de’ quali il re si veste, e menare il cavallo, il quale il re cavalca, e metter la benda reale sopra la testa di esso.
9 The couriers, who had been sent, hurried to complete the king’s command, but the edict was hung up in Susa immediately. And the king and Haman celebrated a feast, while all the Jews in the city were weeping.	9 E que’ vestimenti, e quel cavallo, si converrebbero dare in mano di un personaggio d’infra i principi del re, d’infra i baroni; e colui il quale il re volesse onorare, dovrebbe esser vestito di que’ vestimenti, e farsi cavalcar quel cavallo per le strade della città; e si converrebbe gridar davanti a lui: Così deve farsi a colui, il quale il re vuole onorare.
	10 Allora il re disse ad Haman: Prendi prestamente i vestimenti, e il cavallo, come tu hai detto, e fa’ così a Mardocheo, quel Giudeo che siede alla porta del re; non tralasciar nulla di tutto ciò che tu hai detto.
	11 Haman adunque prese i vestimenti, e il cavallo, e vestì Mardocheo, e lo fece cavalcar per le strade della città; e gridava davanti a lui: Così deve farsi a colui che il re vuole onorare
	12 Poi Mardocheo ritornò alla porta del re; ed Haman si ritrasse ratto in casa sua, dolente, e col capo coperto.
	13 Ed Haman raccontò a Zeres, sua moglie, ed a tutti i suoi amici, tutto ciò che gli era avvenuto. E i suoi savi, e Zeres, sua moglie, gli dissero: Se Mardocheo, davanti al quale tu sei cominciato a scadere, è del legnaggio de’ Giudei, tu non potrai sopraffarlo; anzi del tutto tu caderai davanti a lui.
	14 MENTRE costoro parlavano ancora con lui, giunsero degli eunuchi del re, e ne menarono prestamente Haman al convito che Ester avea apparecchiato
