1 And it was reported to Holofernes, the leader of the military of the Assyrians, that the sons of Israel were preparing themselves to resist, and also that they had closed the mountain passes.	1 E nunciato fu ad Oloferne, principe dello esercito degli Assiri, che i figliuoli d' Israel si aveano preparati a far resistenza, e aveano chiuse le vie de' monti.
2 And he was enraged with extreme fury and great indignation, and he called together all the leaders of Moab and the leaders of Ammon.	2 E per questo si accese di furore grande e di grande ira, e chiamò tutti li prìncipi di Moab e li duchi di Ammon.
3 And he said to them: “Tell me who this people may be, who obstruct the mountains. And which are their cities, and of what kind, and how many? And then, what may be their power, and what may be their number, and who is king over their military?	3 E disse loro: ditemi: chi è questo popolo che circonda questi monti? ovver che gente è questa, e di che condizione, e quante sono le loro città, e che potenza è la sua? ovver che moltitudine è la sua, ovver chi è principe del suo esercito?
4 And why have these, more than all who dwell in the east, shown contempt for us, and have not gone out to meet us, so that they might receive us with peace?”	4 ovver per che cagione, sopra tutti quelli che àbitano nell' oriente, costoro m' hanno disprezzato, e non ci sono venuti incontra a riceverci con pace?
5 Then Achior, commander of all the sons of Ammon, responding, said: “If you would deign to listen, my lord, I will tell the truth in your sight about this people, who dwell in the mountains, and not a false word will go forth from my mouth.	5 Allur Achior principe di tutti i figliuoli di Ammon rispose e disse: se tu ti degnerai di udire, signore mio, io ti dirò la verità nel cospetto tuo, di questo popolo lo quale abita in questi monti; e non uscirà della bocca mia altro che la verità.
6 This people is from the progeny of the Chaldeans.	6 Questo popolo si è della generazione Caldea.
7 These dwelt at first in Mesopotamia, because they were not willing to follow the gods of their fathers, who were in the land of the Chaldeans.	7 Costoro prima abitoro in Mesopotamia, però che non volsero seguitare li dii de' padri loro i quali erano nella terra de' Caldei.
8 And so, forsaking the ceremonies of their fathers, which were with a multitude of gods,	8 E abbandonando le cerimonie de' padri loro, le quali erano nella moltitudine di dii,
9 they worshipped one God of heaven, who also instructed them to go forth from that place and to dwell in Canaan. And when a famine covered the whole land, they went down into Egypt, and there, through four hundred years, they were so multiplied, that the army of them could not be numbered.	9 adororono uno Dio del cielo, il quale li comandò che si partissino indi, e andassero ad abitare in Caran. E avendo coperto la fame tutta la terra, discesero in Egitto, e ivi stettero per quattrocento anni, e in tanto moltiplicarono, che il loro esercito non si può numerare.
10 And when the king of Egypt oppressed them, and also subjugated them to labor with clay and brick in the building of his cities, they cried out to their Lord, and he struck the entire land of Egypt with various plagues.	10 E avendoli gravati il re dello Egitto, e in creta e in pietre per edificazione delle sue cittadi gli avesse soggiogati, chiamarono al suo Dio; e percosse (il suo Iddio) tutta la terra dello Egitto d? varie piaghe.
11 And when the Egyptians had cast them away from them, and the plague had ceased from them, and they were willing to seize them again and recall them to their servitude:	11 E avendogli cacciati fuori gli Egizii, ed essendo da loro cessata la piaga, e un' altra volta li volessero pigliare, e ritornarli al suo servizio,
12 the God of heaven opened the sea to these as they fled, so that the waters were made to stand firm like a wall on either side, and these walked across the bottom of the sea and passed through with dry feet.	12 fuggendo costoro, il suo Iddio del cielo aperse il mare, per tal modo che di qua e di là l'acque (del mare) sì solidorono come fossono muraglie, e passò questo popolo per lo fondo del mare con lo piede asciutto.
13 In that place, when an innumerable army of the Egyptians pursued after them, they were so overwhelmed with the waters, that not even one remained to report to posterity what had happened.	13 Nel qual luogo perseguitandogli uno innumerabile esercito degli Egizii, per tal modo l'acqua coperse tutti quelli d' Egitto, (e furono tutti affondati, sì) che non vi rimase pur uno il quale potesse nunciare il fatto a quelli che erano rimasti.
14 In truth, going forth from the Red Sea, they occupied the deserts of mount Sinai, in which man could never dwell, nor a son of man take rest.	14 E usciti del mare rosso, andorono contro agli deserti del monte Sina, negli quali mai non vi potè abitare uomo, e non vi si riposò mai uomo.
15 In that place, bitter fountains became sweet for them to drink, and, through forty years, they continued to receive provisions from heaven.	15 In quelli luoghi v'erano le fontane amare, le quali diventarono loro dolci acciò che potessero bere; e XL anni furono nutriti collo cibo lo quale era loro mandato dal cielo.
16 And, although they had entered without bow and arrow, and without shield and sword, their God fought on their behalf and was victorious.	16 E a tutti quelli luoghi dove entrarono senza arco e sagitta, e senza scudo e coltello, lo Dio loro pugnò per loro, e vinse.
17 And there was no one who could attack this people, except when they withdrew from the worship of the Lord their God.	17 E non fu mai popolo che li vincesse venendoli incontro, se non quando si partiro dalli comandamenti del suo Signore Iddio.
18 But as often as they worshipped any other, except their own God, they were delivered to plunder, and to the sword, and into reproach.	18 Ogni fiata che adorarono altro Iddio, che il suo, erano dati in preda e in coltello e in obbrobrio (cioè erano presi, rubati, morti e confusi nelle mani de' loro inimici).
19 But as often as they were repentant for having withdrawn from the worship of their God, the God of heaven gave them the power to resist.	19 E ogni volta che si pentirono di essersi partiti dal servizio del suo Iddio, gli diede loro il Dio (suo) del cielo potenza di far resistenza a tutti li suoi nemici.
20 And, indeed, they overthrew the king of the Canaanites, and of the Jebusites, and of the Perizzites, and of the Hethites, and of the Hevites, and of the Amorrhites, and all the powerful ones in Hesebon, and these same possessed their lands and their cities.	20 E oltre questo (vinsero e) gittorono a terra il popolo Cananeo, Iebuseo e Fereseo ed Eteo ed Eveo e Amorreo e tutti li potenti che erano in Esebon; e possedettero tutte le loro terre e cittadi.
21 And, as long as they did not sin in the sight of their God, it was well with them. For their God hates iniquity.	21 E sempre ebbero bene (assai), salvo che quando cominciorono a peccare nel cospetto del suo Iddio; però che lo Dio loro ha in odio la iniquità (e li peccati).
22 And even some years ago, when they had withdrawn from the way that their God had given them to walk, they were destroyed in battles by many nations and very many of them were led away captive into a land not their own.	22 E conciosia che innanzi questi anni si-fussono partiti dalla legge la qual gli avea loro data Iddio, che osservassono quella, furono esterminati in molte battaglie da molte nazioni, e molti di loro furono menati prigioni nelle terre non sue.
23 But, more recently, returning to the Lord their God, from the dispersion in which they had been scattered, they have united and have ascended into all these mountains, and they again possess Jerusalem, where their holy things are.	23 Ma nuovamente sono ritornati al suo Signore Iddio; e delli luoghi, dove erano dispersi, sono radunati, e sono saliti in tutti questi monti, e anco possedono Ierusalem, dove sono le cose sante de' santi.
24 Therefore, now my lord, inquire if there may be any iniquity of theirs in the sight of their God. If so, let us ascend to them, because their God will surely deliver them to you, and they will be subjugated under the yoke of your power.	24 Ora, signore mio, investiga diligentemente: se hanno commesso alcuno peccato nel cospetto del suo Iddio, andiamo contro a loro, però che il Dio suo te li darà nelle mani, e saranno soggiogati sotto il giogo della potenza tua.
25 But if, in truth, there may be no offense of this people before their God, we will not be able to resist them, because their God will defend them, and we will become a disgrace to the whole earth.”	25 Ma se non si trova offesa alcuna nel cospetto del suo Iddio, non li potremo fare resistenza; però che lo Dio loro li difenderà; e saremo in obbrobrio a tutta la terra.
26 And it happened, when Achior had ceased to speak these words, all the great men of Holofernes were angry, and they intended to execute him, saying to each other:	26 E dopo che Achior ebbe parlato queste parole, furono molto irati tutti li principali ch' erano con Oloferne; e pensavano di uccidere Achior, dicendo l'uno all' altro:
27 “Who is this, that says the sons of Israel are able to resist king Nebuchadnezzar and his armies: unarmed men, and without strength, and without skill in the art of fighting?	27 chi è costui che dice, che i figliuoli d' Israel potranno fare resistenza a Nabucodonosor re e alli suoi eserciti, uomini senz' arme e senza potenza e senza notizia de' fatti delle battaglie?
28 Therefore, so that Achior may know that he has failed us, let us ascend to the mountains. And, when the most powerful among them have been taken, then, with them, he will be impaled with the sword.	28 Acciò che adunque conosca Achior, che c'inganna, andiamo in questi monti; e quando saranno presi li loro potenti, allora uccideremo Achior, insieme con loro,
29 So may every people know that Nebuchadnezzar is god of the earth, and there is no other, except him.”	29 acciò che sappia ogni gente, che Nabucodonosor è dio della terra, e oltra lui non è altro iddio.
