1 Then the kings as well as the princes of the provinces sent their emissaries from all of the cities: from Syria, particularly Mesopotamia, and Syria Sobal, and Libya as well as Cilicia. These, upon coming to Holofernes, said:	1 In quel tempo li re e li prìncipi di tutte le città e delle provincie, di Siria cioè e di Mesopotamia, e di Siria Sobal e di Libia e di Cilicia, mandarono i suoi ambasciatori, li quali venendo ad Oloferne, dissero :
2 “Let your indignation concerning us cease. For it is better for us to live in service to Nebuchadnezzar, the great king, and to become subject to you, rather than to die, even though we may have to suffer our condemnation into the annihilation of slavery.	2 cessi la indignazione tua contro a noi; meglio è che vivi serviamo a Nabucodonosor re grande, e che siamo sudditi a te, che moriamo con la nostra distruzione sostenendo i danni della nostra servitù.
3 All our cities and all our possessions, all mountains, and hills, and fields, and herds of cattle, and flocks of sheep, and goats, and horses, and camels, and all our resources and families are in your sight.	3 Tutte le nostre città, tutte le nostre possessioni, tutti i nostri monti e colli e campi, armenti di buoi e greggie di pecore e di capre, di cavalli e di cammelli, e tutta la facoltà nostra e famiglia sono nel tuo cospetto.
4 Let all that we have be subject to your law.	4 Sian tutte queste cose sotto alla legge tua.
5 We, and our sons, are your servants.	5 Noi anco, e li figliuoli nostri, siamo tuoi servi.
6 Come to us as a peaceful lord, and use our service, just as it pleases you.”	6 Vieni a noi come pacifico signore, e usa il servizio nostro, come a te piace.
7 Then he descended from the mountains with horsemen, in great power, and he took charge of every city and of every inhabitant of the land.	7 Allora discese de' monti con li cavalieri con grande potenza, ed ebbe tutte le città e tutta la terra abitata (con gli abitatori).
8 And, from all the cities, he took for himself auxiliaries: strong men and well-chosen for war.	8 E di tutte le cittadi tolse in ausilio uomini forti ed eletti a battaglia.
9 And such a dread lay upon those provinces, that the leading and honored inhabitants of all the cities, together with the people, went out to meet him at his arrival.	9 Ed era tanto lo timore di costui in quelle provincie, che tutti gli abitatori delle città, principi e uomini onorati, insieme con gli popoli gli audavano incontro, quando lui venìa,
10 They received him with garlands and lamps; they were led by choirs with timbrels and flutes.	10 ricevendolo con le corone e lampade, facendo i balli con pifferi (e cimbali) e timpani.
11 Yet, not even by doing these things were they able to mitigate the ferocity of his chest.	11 Nè, anco facendo queste feste, potero mitigare la ferocità del suo cuore.
12 For he both destroyed their cities and cut down their sacred groves.	12 Però che disfece le loro cittadi, e arse li boschi loro.
13 For king Nebuchadnezzar had instructed him to exterminate all the gods of the earth, evidently so that he alone might be called ‘god’ by those nations which were able to be subjugated by the power of Holofernes.	13 E Nabucodonosor gli avea comandato, ch' egli esterminasse tutti i dii della terra, cioè che facesse per tal modo che esso solo fosse chiamato iddio da tutte quelle nazioni, le quali Oloferne potesse soggiogare con la potenza sua.
14 But when he had passed through Syria Sobal, and all of Apamea, and all Mesopotamia, he came to the Idumeans in the land of Gibeah.	14 E passando Oloferne Siria Sobal e tutta Apamea e tutta Mesopotamia, venne agl' Idumei nella terra di Gabaa.
15 And he took their cities, and he sat there for thirty days, during which days he instructed all the troops of his army to regroup.	15 E prese le sue cittadi, e stette ivi per trenta di; nelli quali dì comandò che si radunasse tutto lo esercito della virtù sua.
