1 Then Judith sang this canticle to the Lord, saying:	1 Allora Giuditta cantò questo cantico al Signore, e disse:
2 “Call to the Lord with drums, sing to the Lord with cymbals, play for him a new psalm, exalt and invoke his name.	2 « Cominciate a lodare il Signore coi timpani, celebrate il Signore coi cembali, intonate a lui un nuovo cantico, esaltate e invocate il suo nome.
3 The Lord crushes wars; the Lord is his name.	3 Il Signore stritola gli eserciti: egli si chiama il Signore.
4 He has set up his camp in the midst of his people, to rescue us from the hand of all our enemies.	4 Egli pose il suo campo in mezzo al suo popolo, per liberarci dalle mani di tutti i nostri nemici.
5 Assur came from the mountains, from the North, with the multitude of his strength. His multitude blockaded the torrents, and their horses covered the valleys.	5 Assur venne dai monti, da settentrione colla moltitudine delle sue forze: le sue schiere riempirono i torrenti, i suoi destrieri ricopersero le valli.
6 He told himself that he would set fire to my borders, and kill my young men with the sword, to give my children into plunder and my virgins into captivity.	6 Egli disse di dare alle fiamme il mio paese, di far perire di spada i miei giovani, di dare in preda i miei fanciulli, ed alla schiavitù le vergini.
7 But the almighty Lord has harmed him, and he has delivered him into the hands of a woman, and he has pierced him through.	7 Ma il Signore onnipotente l'ha colpito, l'ha dato in mano d'una donna che l'ha trafitto.
8 For their powerful one did not fall by young men, nor did the sons of Titan strike him, nor did lofty giants set themselves against him, but Judith, the daughter of Merari, dissolved him with the splendor of her face.	8 Il loro eroe non fu atterrato dai giovani, non lo percossero i figli di Titan, non gli si opposero gli smisurati giganti; ma Giuditta, la figlia di Merari, colla bellezza del suo viso l'ha disfatto.
9 For she put away from herself the garments of widowhood, and she clothed herself with the garments of rejoicing, for the sake of the exultation of the sons of Israel.	9 Essa, deposti gli abiti vedovili, indossò le vesti della gioia, per il trionfo dei figli d'Israele.
10 She anointed her face with ointment, and she gathered the locks of her hair with a headdress; she accepted a new dress in order to deceive him.	10 Essa, spalmò il suo viso di profumi, imprigionò le sue chiome in una mitra, si ammantò di veste nuova per sedurlo.
11 Her sandals ravished his eyes; her beauty made his soul her captive; with a blade, she cut off his head.	11 I suoi sandali rapirono gli occhi di lui, la sua bellezza ne fece schiava l'anima, ed essa colla spada gli troncò il collo.
12 The Persians were horrified at her constancy, and the Medes at her boldness.	12 I Persiani restarono sbigottiti della sua costanza, i Medi della sua audacia.
13 Then the camp of the Assyrians howled, when my humble ones appeared, parched with thirst.	13 Allora diede in alte grida il campo degli Assiri quando comparvero i miei, estenuati e riarsi dalla sete
14 The sons of the servant girls have pierced them through, and, like fleeing servants, they have killed them. They perished in battle before the face of the Lord, my God.	14 I figli di giovani spose li han trafitti, li hanno uccisi come fanciulli in preda alla fuga. Così son periti nella battaglia davanti alla faccia del Signore mio Dio.
15 Let us sing a canticle to the Lord; let us sing a new hymn to our God.	15 Cantiamo un inno al Signore, un inno nuovo cantiamo al Signore Dio nostro.
16 O Adonai, O Lord, you are great, and splendor is in your virtue, and no one is able to overcome you.	16 Adonai, Signore, tu sei grande, magnifico nella tua possanza, nessuno può superarti.
17 Let all your creatures serve you. For you spoke, and they became. You sent forth your Spirit, and they were created. And there is no one who can withstand your voice.	17 A te obbediscano tutte le tue creature, perchè parlasti e furori fatte, mandasti il tuo spirito e furon create: nessuno può resistere alla tua voce.
18 The mountains will be moved from the foundations by the waters. The rocks, like wax, will liquefy before your face.	18 Si scoteranno dai i fondamenti i monti e i mari, le i pietre qual cera si struggeranno davanti alla tua faccia;
19 But those who fear you will be great with you, throughout all things.	19 ma quelli che ti temono saranno grandi dinanzi a te in tutto.
20 Woe to the people that rises up against my people. For the Lord almighty will be vindicated against them; in the day of judgment, he will visit them.	20 Guai alla nazione che si leva contro il mio popolo; il Signore onnipotente si vendicherà di essa, e la visiterà nel giorno del giudizio;
21 For he will bestow fire and worms on their flesh, so that they may burn and have sensations without ceasing.”	21 egli farà entrare il fuoco e i vermi nelle loro carni, li farà ardere e straziare in eterno ».
22 And it happened that, after these things, all the people came to Jerusalem after the victory, to adore the Lord. And as soon as they were purified, they all offered holocausts, and vows, and their promises.	22 Dopo questo e dopo la vittoria, tutto il popolo andò ad adorare il Signore in Gerusalemme, e tutti, appena purificati, offrirono i loro olocausti, voti e le cose promesse.
23 Moreover, Judith offered all the implements of war from Holofernes, which the people gave to her, and the canopy that she had taken away from his chamber, as an anathema unto oblivion.	23 E Giuditta, in anatema d'oblio, offrì tutti gli strumenti da guerra di Oloferne, a lei dati dal popolo, e il conopeo che essa stessa aveva tolto dal di lui letto.
24 But the people were cheerful before the face of the sanctuary, and for three months the gladness of this victory was celebrated with Judith.	24 Tutto il popolo stava pieno di gioia dinanzi al luogo santo, e per tre mesi fu celebrata con Giuditta la festa di questa vittoria.
25 And after those days, each one returned to his own house, and Judith became great in Bethulia, and she had great splendor in all the land of Israel.	25 Finiti quei giorni, ciascuno se ne tornò a casa sua e Giuditta divenne grande in Betulia, e la più illustre di tutto il paese d'Israele,
26 For chastity was one with her virtue, so that she did not know man all the days of her life, after the passing away of her husband, Manasseh.	26 perchè alla virtù univa la castità, in modo che non conobbe uomo in tutto il tempo della sua vita, dopo la morte del suo marito Manasse.
27 And then, on feast days, she came forth with great glory.	27 Ai giorni di festa essa compariva con molta gloria.
28 But she remained in her husband’s house for one hundred and five years, and she set her handmaid free. And she passed away and was buried with her husband in Bethulia.	28 Stette nella casa del suo marito fino ai centocinque anni, diede la libertà alla sua serva, e quando morì fu sepolta col suo marito in Betulia,
29 And all the people mourned her, for seven days.	29 e fu pianta da tutto il popolo per sette giorni.
30 And, during all the time of her life, there was no one who disturbed Israel, nor for many years after her death.	30 Per tutto il tempo della sua vita e per molti anni dopo la sua morte non venne nessuno a turbare Israele.
31 Moreover, the day of the festivity of this victory was accepted by the Hebrews in the numbering of holy days, and it was religiously observed by the Jews, from that time, even to the present day.	31 Il giorno di festa per la sua vittoria fu messo dagli Ebrei nel numero dei giorni santi ed è dai Giudei onorato da quel tempo fino ad oggi.
