1 And when the entire army had heard that Holofernes was beheaded, reason and resolution fled from them, and, being moved by trembling and fear alone, they thought only to flee to safety.	1 En apprenant ce qui s’était passé, ceux qui étaient dans les tentes ne savaient plus que penser.
2 So then, no one spoke with his neighbor, but hanging their heads and leaving everything behind, they hurried to escape from the Hebrews, who, as they had heard, were advancing against them well-armed. And they fled through the ways of the fields and the paths of the hills.	2 La peur, la terreur, fondirent sur eux, et ils commencèrent à se disperser sans plus se préoccuper les uns des autres, prenant la fuite par tous les chemins de la plaine et de la montagne.
3 And so, the sons of Israel, seeing them fleeing, pursued them. And they went down after them, sounding the trumpets and howling.	3 Ceux qui campaient sur les montagnes autour de Béthulie prirent la fuite eux aussi. Alors les Israélites, tous ceux qui étaient en état de se battre, fondirent sur eux.
4 And, since the Assyrians were not united, they rushed headlong in their flight. But the sons of Israel, pursuing like one unit, struck down all they were able to find.	4 Osias fit porter des messages à Bétomestaïm, à Bèbé, à Chobé, à Kola, dans tout le territoire d’Israël, pour faire savoir ce qui s’était passé et inviter tout le monde à se jeter sur les ennemis et à les anéantir.
5 And so, Uzziah sent messengers through all the cities and regions of Israel.	5 À peine avertis, les hommes d’Israël tombèrent sur tous ceux qui fuyaient et ils les frappèrent jusqu’à Choba. Ceux de Jérusalem et de toute la montagne se joignirent à eux car ils avaient appris eux aussi ce qui était arrivé dans le camp ennemi. Puis ce fut le tour des gens de Galaad et de Galilée qui les prirent sur le côté et les frappèrent sévèrement jusqu’à proximité de Damas et de sa région.
6 And then, every region and every city sent their chosen young men with weapons after them, and they pursued them with the edge of the sword, until they passed through to the extremities of their borders.	6 Quant aux gens qui étaient restés à Béthulie, ils se jetèrent sur le camp des Assyriens; ils le pillèrent et ramassèrent un énorme butin.
7 But the remainder, who were in Bethulia, entered the camp of the Assyrians and took away the plunder that the Assyrians, in their flight, had left behind, and they were exceedingly burdened.	7 Les Israélites qui revenaient du massacre se servirent avec ce qui restait. Les gens des bourgs et des villages de la montagne et de la plaine eurent aussi leur part de butin puisqu’il y en avait partout.
8 In truth, those who returned victorious to Bethulia brought with them everything that was theirs. So there was no numbering their cattle, and beasts, and everything they could carry, so much so that, from the least to the greatest, all were made rich by their spoils.	8 Le grand prêtre Yoakim et tout le conseil des anciens d’Israël qui étaient à Jérusalem, vinrent pour voir de plus près les bienfaits dont le Seigneur avait comblé Israël, pour voir Judith et pour la saluer.
9 But Joachim, the high priest, came from Jerusalem to Bethulia with all his elders to see Judith.	9 En entrant chez elle, tous la bénissaient d’une seule voix: “Tu es la gloire de Jérusalem! Tu es la joie et l’orgueil d’Israël! Tu es le grand honneur de notre race!
10 And when she had gone out to him, they all blessed her with one voice, saying: “You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Israel, you are the honor of our people.	10 “C’est une grande chose que tu as faite, tu as bien mérité d’Israël, car Dieu était avec toi en tout ce que tu as fait. Que le Seigneur tout-puissant te bénisse pour les siècles!” Tout le peuple reprenait: “Amen!”
11 For you have acted manfully, and your heart has been strengthened. For you loved chastity, and, after your husband, you have not known any other. Therefore, also the hand of the Lord has strengthened you, and, therefore, you will be blessed for all eternity.”	11 La population pilla le camp durant 30 jours; on donna à Judith la tente d’Holoferne et toute sa vaisselle d’argent, sa literie, ses bassins et tous ses meubles. Elle le prit, elle en chargea sa mule, attela ses chariots, et rassembla le tout.
12 And all the people said: “Amen. Amen.”	12 Toutes les femmes d’Israël sortirent pour la voir, elles la bénissaient et beaucoup d’entre elles firent un chœur en son honneur. Judith prit des branchages et les donna aux femmes qui étaient avec elle.
13 But all of thirty days were scarcely enough for the people of Israel to collect the spoils of the Assyrians.	13 Elles se firent des couronnes d’olivier, elle et ses compagnes, puis elle prit la tête du cortège, conduisant le chœur des femmes; tous les hommes d’Israël suivaient, armés et couronnés, chantant des cantiques à pleine voix.
14 But moreover, all of those things that were clearly the particular possessions of Holofernes they gave to Judith: with gold, and silver, and garments, and gems, and furniture. And these were all delivered to her by the people.	14 Alors Judith entonna cette action de grâces devant tout Israël, et tout le peuple reprit son cantique:
15 And all the people rejoiced, with the women, and the virgins, and the young men, playing on wind instruments and stringed instruments.
