Nehemiah 2

1 Now it happened that, in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of king Artaxerxes, wine was before him; and I lifted up the wine, and I gave it to the king. And I was like someone languishing before his face.	1 E fu fatto nel mese di Nisan (cioè aprile) nel vigesimo anno di Artaserse re; e lo vino era dinanzi a lui, e levai il vino e diedilo al re; ed era quasi infermo dinanzi la faccia sua.
2 And the king said to me: “Why is your expression sad, though you do not appear to be sick? This is not without cause, but some evil, I know not what, is in your heart.” And I was struck with an exceedingly great fear.	2 E dissemi il re: perchè il volto tuo è tristo, concio sia che non ti veda infermo? questo non è sanza cagione, ma non so lo male che è nel tuo cuore. Ed ebbi una grande paura.
3 And I said to the king: “O king, live forever. Why should my expression not be mournful, since the city of the house of the sepulchers of my father is desolate, and its gates have been burned with fire?”	3 E dissi al re: re, vivi in eterno; perchè non debbe essere il volto mio tristo, chè la città de' sepolcri di mio padre è deserta, e le sue porte sono abbruciate al fuoco?
4 And the king said to me: “What would you request?” And I prayed to the God of heaven.	4 E dissemi il re: per qual cosa addomandi tu? E orai a Dio del cielo,
5 And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, and if your servant is pleasing before your face: that you would send me into Judea, to the city of the sepulcher of my father. And I will rebuild it.”	5 e dissi al re: se ti pare buono, signore mio re, e se il tuo servo ha trovato grazia nel cospetto tuo, che tu mi mandi in Giudea, alla città del sepolcro di mio padre, e sì la edificherò.
6 And the king said to me, with the queen who was sitting beside him: “Until what time will your journey be, and when will you return?” And it was pleasing before the countenance of the king, and so he sent me. And I established a time for him.	6 E dissemi lo re, e la regina che sedea appo lo re: persino a quan.o tempo durerà questa tua andata, e quando tornerai tu? E piacque nel cospetto del re, e mandommi; e diedigli lo tempo (della mia tornata).
7 And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, may he give me letters to the governors of the region beyond the river, so that they may lead me through, until I arrive in Judea,	7 E dissigli: se ti piace, signore mio re, di darmi una epistola alli duchi della regione la quale è di là del fiume, che mi conducano persino che vadi in Giudea,
8 and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, so that he may give me timber, in order that I may be able to cover the gates of the tower of the house, and the walls of the city, and the house that I will enter.” And the king granted to me in accord with the good hand of my God, who is with me.	8 e una epistola ad Asaf custode del bosco del re, che mi dia le legna, acciò ch' io possi coprire (e chiudere) le porte del tempio, e i muri della città, e la casa la qual entrerò per abitare. E diedemi il re secondo la buona mano del mio Iddio meco.
9 And I went to the governors of the region beyond the river, and I gave them the letters of the king. Now the king had sent with me military leaders and horsemen.	9 E venni alli duchi della regione di là dal fiume, e diedigli le epistole del re. E avea mandato meco il re i principi de' cavalieri, e li cavalieri.
10 And Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, heard this. And they were saddened, with a great affliction, that a man had arrived who was seeking the prosperity of the sons of Israel.	10 E udirono Sanaballat Oronite e Tobia servo Ammanite; e contristorsi di una grande afflizione, che fosse venuto uno uomo lo quale cercasse la prosperità de' figliuoli d' Israel.
11 And I arrived at Jerusalem, and I was there for three days.	11 E venni in Ierusalem, e stettivi tre dì.
12 And I got up in the night, I and a few men with me. And I did not reveal to anyone what God had placed in my heart to do in Jerusalem. And there was no animal with me, except the animal on which I was sitting.	12 E leva'mi di notte, e pochi uomini meco, e non dissi a persona quello che Dio mi avea dato nel cuore, ch' io dovessi fare in Ierusalem; e non avea giumento meco, salvo quello dove io sedea.
13 And I departed in the night through the gate of the valley, and before the fountain of the dragon, and toward the dung gate. And I considered the wall of Jerusalem, which was broken apart, and its gates, which had been consumed by fire.	13 E uscì' fuori di notte per la porta della valle, e dinanzi alla fonte del dragone, e alla porta delle brutture; e considerava il muro di Ierusalem ruinato, e le sue porte consunte al fuoco.
14 And I continued on to the gate of the fountain, and to the aqueduct of the king. And there was no room for the beast on which I was sitting to pass through.	14 E andai alla porta della fonte, e al condotto dell' acqua del re; e non era luogo allo animale dove sedea, per lo quale lo potesse passare.
15 And so I climbed up in the night along the torrent, and I considered the wall. And turning back, I went by the gate of the valley, and I returned.	15 E sali' suso per lo torrente la notte, e considerava il muro; e ritornato venni alla porta della valle, e ritornai.
16 Now the magistrates did not know where I had gone, or what I had done. For I had revealed nothing, even to that point in time, to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the magistrates, or to the others who were doing the work.	16 Li magistrati non sapeano dove fossi ito, ovver quello ch' io mi facessi; ma e alli Giudei e alli sacerdoti e alli prìncipi e alli magistrati e a tutti gli operarii, persino a quella parte di tutti i luoghi, non gli avea manifestato altro.
17 And so I said to them: “You know the affliction in which we are, because Jerusalem is desolate, and its gates have been consumed by fire. Come, and let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and let us no longer be in disgrace.”	17 E dissi loro: voi avete conosciuta la afflizione nella qual noi siamo; però che Ierusalem è deserta, e le sue porte sono state abbruciate; venite, ed edifichiamo i muri di Ierusalem, e non stiamo più in questo obbrobrio.
18 And I revealed to them how the hand of my God was with me for good, and the words of the king, which he had spoken to me. And I said: “Let us rise up, and build.” And their hands were strengthened for good.	18 E manifestai loro la mano del mio Dio, ch' ella fosse buona meco, e le parole del re, le quali lui mi avea detto, e però dico: leviamoci, ed edifichiamo. E le loro mani furono (per questo) confortate in buono.
19 But Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, and Geshem, an Arab, heard of it. And they ridiculed and disparaged us, and they said: “What is this thing that you are doing? Could you be rebelling against the king?”	19 E udirono Sanaballat Oronite e Tobia servo Ammanite e Gossem Arabo; e sì ci dileggiavano e dispregiavano, e dissero: che cosa è questa che voi fate? or ribellate voi contro al re?
20 And I replied to them a word, and I said to them: “The God of heaven himself is helping us, and we are his servants. Let us rise up and build. But there is no portion, or justice, or remembrance in Jerusalem for you.”	20 E io li risposi, e dissi loro: lo Iddio del cielo esso è quello che ci aiuta, e noi siamo suoi servi; leviamoci ed edifichiamo; (a) voi (non vi tocca questo, però che) non avete parte nè giustizia nè memoria in Ierusalem.
