1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.	1 Roboám el is ment Szíchembe: ott gyűlt ugyanis egybe egész Izrael, hogy őt királlyá tegye.
2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.	2 Amikor azonban meghallotta ezt Jeroboám, Nábát fia, aki Egyiptomban tartózkodott, (oda menekült ugyanis Salamon elől), azonnal visszatért.
3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:	3 El is hívták, és ő eljött egész Izraellel és ezeket mondta Roboámnak:
4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”	4 »Atyád igen kemény igával sújtott minket: te könnyebb dolgokat parancsolj, mint atyád, aki nehéz szolgaságot rakott ránk, és enyhíts egy kissé a terhen s akkor szolgálni fogunk neked.«
5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,	5 Ő így válaszolt: »Három nap múlva jöjjetek vissza hozzám.« Amikor aztán a nép eltávozott,
6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”	6 tanácsot tartott azokkal a vénekkel, akik atyja, Salamon előtt szolgáltak, amíg élt. Megkérdezte tőlük: »Mit tanácsoltok, mit feleljek a népnek?«
7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”	7 Ők azt mondták neki: »Ha megnyered e nép tetszését s kegyes szavakkal megnyugtatod őket, szolgálni fognak neked minden időben.«
8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.	8 Ám ő figyelmen kívül hagyta a vének tanácsát, és azokkal az ifjakkal kezdett tanácskozni, akik vele nevelkedtek s az ő kíséretét alkották.
9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”	9 Ezt kérdezte tőlük: »Mit láttok jónak, vagy mit kell felelnem e népnek, amely azt mondta nekem: ‘Enyhíts azon az igán, amelyet atyád reánk rakott.’«
10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.	10 Ők úgy feleltek neki, mint ifjak s mint akik vele nevelkedtek a gyönyörökben, s azt mondták: »Így szólj a néphez, amely azt mondta neked: ‘Atyád súlyos igát rakott ránk, te könnyíts rajta’ – így felelj neki: Az én kisujjam vastagabb, mint atyám dereka!
11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”	11 Atyám nehéz igát rakott rátok, én még nehezebbel tetézem: atyám ostorral vert titeket, én skorpióval foglak verni titeket.«
12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.	12 Jeroboám el is jött a harmadik napon az egész néppel együtt Roboámhoz, úgy, ahogy ez meghagyta nekik: »Térjetek vissza hozzám három nap múlva!«
13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.	13 A király keményen felelt, és figyelmen kívül hagyva a vének tanácsát,
14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”	14 az ifjak kívánsága szerint így szólt: »Atyám nehéz igát rakott rátok: én azt nehezebbé teszem, atyám ostorral vert titeket: én skorpióval foglak verni titeket.«
15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.	15 Nem hallgatta meg tehát a nép kérését, mert Isten meg akarta valósítani szavát, amelyet a silói Áhia által Jeroboámhoz, Nábát fiához intézett.
16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.	16 Amikor a király ilyen keményen felelt, az egész nép így szólt hozzá: »Nincs nekünk részünk Dávidban, nincs örökségünk Izáj fiában. Térj vissza sátraidba Izrael, te pedig legeltesd a magad házát, Dávid!« Azzal Izrael visszatért sátraiba.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.	17 Izraelnek azokon a fiain azonban, akik Júda városaiban laktak, továbbra is Roboám uralkodott.
18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.	18 Erre Roboám király elküldte hozzájuk Adurám robotfelügyelőt, de Izrael fiai halálra kövezték őt. Ekkor Roboám király gyorsan szekérre szállt és Jeruzsálembe menekült.
19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.	19 Így pártolt el Izrael Dávid házától mind a mai napig.
