CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
In the twelfth year of Ahaz, the king of Judah: Hoshea, the son of Elah, reigned over Israel, in Samaria, for nine years.1 No décimo segundo ano do reinado de Acaz, rei de Judá,Oséias, filho de Ela, tornou-se rei de Israel em Samaria. Seu reinado durou nove anos.
And he did evil before the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who had been before him.2 Fez o mal aos olhos do Senhor, mas não tanto como seus predecessores no trono de Israel.
Shalmaneser, the king of the Assyrians, ascended against him. And Hoshea became a servant to him, and he paid him tribute.3 Salmanasar, rei da Assíria, atacou-o e Oséias ficou-lhe submisso, pagando-lhe tributo.
And when the king of the Assyrians discovered that Hoshea, striving to rebel, had sent messengers to Sais, to the king of Egypt, so as not to present the tribute to the king of the Assyrians, as he had been accustomed to do each year, he besieged him. And having been bound, he cast him into prison.4 Mas tendo o rei da Assíria descoberto uma conspiração tramada por Oséias, o qual enviara mensageiros a Sua, rei do Egito, e cessara de pagar o tributo anual ao rei da Assíria, tomou-o e o pôs em grilhões numa prisão.
And he wandered through the entire land. And ascending to Samaria, he besieged it for three years.5 Depois atacou Samaria e assediou-a por três anos.
And in the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of the Assyrians captured Samaria, and he carried away Israel to Assyria. And he stationed them in Halah and in Habor, beside the river of Gozan, in the cities of the Medes.6 No ano nono do reinado de Oséias, o rei da Assíria apoderou-se de Samaria e deportou os israelitas para a Assíria, estabelecendo-os em Hala, às margens do Habor, rio de Gozan, e nas cidades da Média. Causas da ruína de Israel
For it happened that, when the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord, their God, who had led them away from the land of Egypt, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, they worshipped strange gods.7 Assim aconteceu porque os filhos de Israel tinham pecado contra o Senhor, seu Deus, que os tinha tirado do Egito e libertado da opressão do faraó, rei dos egípcios. Eles adoraram outros deuses,
And they walked according to the rituals of the nations that the Lord had consumed in the sight of the sons of Israel, and of the kings of Israel. For they had acted similarly.8 adotaram os costumes das nações que o Senhor tinha expulsado diante dos israelitas e seguiram os costumes estabelecidos pelos reis de Israel.
And the sons of Israel offended the Lord, their God, with deeds that were not upright. And they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.9 Os israelitas ofenderam o Senhor, seu Deus, com ações más, e estabeleceram lugares altos em todas as suas localidades, desde a simples torre de guarda até a cidade fortificada.
And they made for themselves statues and sacred groves, on every high hill and under every leafy tree.10 Erigiram estelas e ídolos Asserás em todos os outeiros e debaixo de toda árvore frondosa.
And they were burning incense there, upon altars, in the manner of the nations that the Lord had removed from their face. And they did wicked deeds, provoking the Lord.11 Queimaram incenso nesses lugares altos, como as nações que o Senhor tinha despojado diante deles, e irritaram o Senhor com suas práticas abomináveis,
And they worshipped impurities, concerning which the Lord instructed them that they should not do this word.12 adorando ídolos, embora o Senhor lhes tivesse dito: Não fareis tal coisa.
And the Lord testified to them, in Israel and in Judah, through the hand of all the prophets and seers, saying: “Return from your wicked ways, and keep my precepts and ceremonies, in accord with the entire law, which I instructed to your fathers, and just as I sent to you by the hand of my servants, the prophets.”13 O Senhor tinha advertido Israel e Judá pela boca de seus profetas e videntes: Renunciai às vossas más ações; guardai meus mandamentos e minhas leis; observai toda a lei que prescrevi a vossos pais e que vos transmiti pelos meus servos, os profetas.
But they did not listen. Instead, they hardened their necks to be like the neck of their fathers, who were not willing to obey the Lord, their God.14 Mas eles não o quiseram ouvir, e endureceram o seu coração, como o tinham feito seus pais, que se tornaram infiéis ao Senhor, seu Deus.
And they cast aside his ordinances, and the covenant that he formed with their fathers, and the testimonies which he testified to them. And they pursued vanities and acted vainly. And they followed the nations that were all around them, concerning the things which the Lord had commanded them not to do, and which they did.15 Desprezaram os seus preceitos e a aliança estabelecida com seus pais, não atenderam às advertências que lhes tinha feito, e seguiram as vaidades, tornando-se eles mesmos vaidades; apesar de ter-lhes o Senhor proibido seguir as pisadas dos povos que os cercavam,
And they abandoned all the precepts of the Lord, their God. And they made for themselves two molten calves and sacred groves. And they adored the entire celestial army. And they served Baal.16 abandonaram todos os mandamentos do Senhor, seu Deus, fabricaram para si dois bezerros de metal fundido e ídolos Asserás, prostraram-se diante de todo o exército dos céus, prestaram culto a Baal,
And they consecrated their sons and their daughters through fire. And they devoted themselves to divinations and soothsaying. And they delivered themselves into the doing of evil before the Lord, so that they provoked him.17 fizeram passar pelo fogo seus filhos e filhas, entregaram-se à adivinhação, à bruxaria; enfim, abandonaram-se inteiramente a tudo o que desagradava ao Senhor, irritando-o.
And the Lord became vehemently angry with Israel, and he took them away from his sight. And there remained no one, except the tribe of Judah alone.18 Por isso, o Senhor ficou profundamente indignado contra os israelitas e lançou-os para longe de sua face. Só a tribo de Judá subsistiu.
But even Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord, their God. Instead, they walked in the errors of Israel, which they had wrought.19 Mas nem mesmo Judá observou os mandamentos do Senhor, seu Deus, e seguiu os costumes de Israel.
And the Lord cast aside all of the offspring of Israel. And he afflicted them, and he delivered them into the hand of despoilers, until he drove them away from his face,20 O Senhor rejeitou, pois, toda a linhagem de Israel, humilhou-a e a entregou nas mãos dos saqueadores até que fosse completamente banida de sua presença.
even from that time when Israel was torn away from the house of David, and they appointed for themselves Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, as king. For Jeroboam separated Israel from the Lord, and he caused them to sin a great sin.21 Israel tinha se separado da casa de Davi e tinha proclamado como seu rei a Jeroboão, filho de Nabat, que desviara o seu povo do culto do Senhor e o fizera cair num grande pecado.
And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam, which he had done. And they did not withdraw from these,22 Os israelitas andaram em todos os pecados que Jeroboão tinha cometido, e não se afastaram deles,
even when the Lord carried away Israel from his face, just as he had said by the hand of all his servants, the prophets.
Then the king of the Assyrians brought some from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Avva, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim. And he located them in the cities of Samaria, in place of the sons of Israel.
And when they had begun to live there, they did not fear the Lord. And the Lord sent lions among them, which were killing them.25 Mas como eles não prestavam culto ao Senhor, quando começaram a habitar ali, o Senhor mandou leões contra eles que os devoravam.
And this was reported to the king of the Assyrians, and it was said: “The peoples that you transferred and caused to live in the cities of Samaria, they are ignorant of the ordinances of the God of the land. And so the Lord has sent lions among them. And behold, they have killed them, because they were ignorant of the rituals of the God of the land.”26 Foram então avisar o rei da Assíria: Os povos que transferiste para as cidades da Samaria não sabem como honrar o deus daquela terra. Por isso esse deus mandou contra eles leões que os devoram, porque ignoram o culto do deus da terra.
Then the king of the Assyrians commanded, saying: “Lead to that place one of the priests, whom you brought as a captive from there. And let him go and live with them. And let him teach them the ordinances of the God of the land.”27 O rei da Assíria ordenou o seguinte: Mandai para lá um dos sacerdotes que deportastes, a fim de que ele se estabeleça ali e ensine {ao povo} a maneira de servir o deus da região.
And so, when one of the priests, who had been led away captive from Samaria, had arrived, he lived in Bethel. And he taught them how they should worship the Lord.28 Foi, pois, um dos sacerdotes deportados da Samaria e instalou-se em Betel, onde ensinava ao povo como deviam adorar o Senhor.
And each of the nations made gods of their own, and they placed them in the shrines of the high places, which the Samaritans had made: nation after nation, in their cities in which they were living.29 {Apesar disso} cada nação conservou o seu próprio deus, que colocou nos santuários dos lugares altos estabelecidos pelos samaritanos; cada povo colocou os seus deuses no lugar em que habitava.
So the men of Babylon made Soccoth-benoth; and the men of Cuth made Nergal; and the men of Hamath made Ashima;30 Os babilônios fizeram uma estátua de Socot-Benot; os de Cuta, uma de Nergal; os de Emat, uma de Ásima;
and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak. Then those who were from Sepharvaim burned up their children with fire, for the gods of Sepharvaim: Adram-melech and Anam-melech.31 os de Ava, uma de Nebaaz e uma de Tartac; os de Sefarvaim queimavam seus filhos em honra de Adramelec e de Anamelec, seus deuses.
But nevertheless, they worshipped the Lord. Then they made for themselves, from the least of the people, priests of the high places. And they placed them in the shrines of the high places.32 Adoravam também o Senhor, mas constituíram sacerdotes para os lugares altos, tirados dentre o povo, os quais oficiavam por eles nos santuários dos lugares altos.
And though they worshipped the Lord, they also served their own gods, according to the custom of the nations from which they had been transferred into Samaria.33 Desse modo, adoravam o Senhor, e ao mesmo tempo prestavam culto aos seus próprios deuses, segundo o costume das nações de onde tinham sido transportados.
Even to the present day, they follow the ancient customs; they do not fear the Lord, and they do not keep his ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and commandment, which the Lord had instructed to the sons of Jacob, whom he named Israel.34 Ainda hoje seguem os seus antigos costumes; não temem o Senhor, não observam suas leis, nem suas ordenações, nem a lei e os mandamentos que o Senhor deu aos filhos daquele Jacó, a quem deu o nome de Israel.
And he had struck a covenant with them, and he had commanded them, saying: “You shall not fear foreign gods, and you shall not adore them, and you shall not worship them, and you shall not sacrifice to them.35 O Senhor tinha feito com eles uma aliança e lhes tinha dado a seguinte ordem: Não adorareis outros deuses, nem vos prostrareis diante deles; não lhes prestareis culto, e não lhes oferecereis sacrifícios.
But the Lord, your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with an outstretched arm, him shall you fear, and him shall you adore, and to him shall you sacrifice.36 Mas temei ao Senhor que vos tirou do Egito com o poder de seu braço. A ele temereis, diante dele vos prostrareis e a ele oferecereis os vossos sacrifícios.
Also, the ceremonies, and judgments, and law, and commandment, which he wrote for you, you shall keep so that you do them for all days. And you shall not fear strange gods.37 Obedecereis sempre, e cuidadosamente, os preceitos, os estatutos, a lei e os mandamentos que ele vos deu por escrito. Não adorareis outros deuses.
And the covenant, which he struck with you, you shall not forget; neither shall you worship strange gods.38 Não vos esquecereis do tratado que fiz convosco: não adorareis outros deuses.
But you shall fear the Lord, your God. And he will rescue you from the hand of all your enemies.”39 Ao Senhor, vosso Deus, temereis, e ele vos livrará das mãos de todos os vossos inimigos.
Yet truly, they did not listen to this. Instead, they acted in accord with their earlier custom.40 Eles, porém, não obedeceram, e seguiram os seus antigos costumes.
And such were these nations: to some extent fearing the Lord, yet nevertheless also serving their idols. As for their sons and grandsons, just as their fathers acted, so also did they act, even to the present day.41 Adoraram o Senhor, mas honravam ao mesmo tempo os seus ídolos. Ainda hoje fazem seus filhos e seus netos como fizeram seus pais.
