1 After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.”	1 Dopo molto tempo la parola del Signore fu rivolta ad Elia, nel terzo anno, in questi termini: "Va' e mostrati ad Acab, perché invierò la pioggia sulla faccia della terra".
2 Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria.	2 Elia andò a mostrarsi ad Acab, quando a Samaria la carestia era molto grave.
3 And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.	3 Acab chiamò Abdia, sovrintendente del palazzo, che era molto timorato di Dio.
4 For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water.	4 Infatti quando Gezabele sterminò i profeti del Signore, Abdia prese cento profeti, li nascose a cinquanta a cinquanta nella caverna e li rifornì di pane ed acqua.
5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.”	5 Acab disse ad Abdia: "Vieni, percorriamo il paese ad ispezionare tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e tutti i torrenti; forse troveremo dell'erba e potremo conservare in vita cavalli e muli e non dovremo uccidere il bestiame".
6 And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself.	6 Si divisero il paese da percorrere; Acab se ne andò da solo per una strada e Abdia se ne andò da solo per un'altra.
7 And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?”	7 Mentre Abdia era in cammino, ecco che gli venne incontro Elia; riconosciutolo, si prostrò con la faccia a terra e gli disse: "Sei proprio tu il mio signore, Elia?".
8 And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.”	8 Gli rispose: "Sono io! Va' a dire al tuo signore: ecco Elia!".
9 And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death?	9 Quegli replicò: "Che peccato ho commesso, perché tu dia il tuo servo in mano di Acab per farmi morire?
10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all.	10 Com'è vero che vive il Signore, tuo Dio, non c'è nazione e regno dove il mio signore non abbia mandato a cercarti; quando dicevano: "Non è qui", egli faceva giurare il regno e la nazione che non ti avevano trovato.
11 And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’	11 E ora tu mi dici: "Va' a dire al tuo padrone: ecco Elia!";
12 And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy.	12 ma quando mi sarò allontanato da te, lo spirito del Signore ti trasporterà non so dove; cosicché io andrò ad annunciarti ad Acab e questi, non trovandoti, mi ucciderà. Eppure il tuo servo teme il Signore fin dalla giovinezza!
13 Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water?	13 Non hanno riferito al mio signore ciò che ho fatto quando Gezabele sterminò i profeti del Signore e nascosi cento profeti del Signore, a cinquanta a cinquanta, nella grotta e li rifornii di pane e di acqua?
14 And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!”	14 Ed ora tu mi dici: "Va' a dire al tuo signore: ecco Elia!"; così egli mi ucciderà!".
15 And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.”	15 Elia rispose: "Com'è vero che vive il Signore degli eserciti, ch'io servo: oggi stesso mi mostrerò a lui!".
16 Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.	16 Abdia andò incontro al re e gli riferì la cosa; e Acab andò incontro a Elia.
17 And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?”	17 Appena Acab vide Elia, gli disse: "Sei tu colui che mette sottosopra Israele?".
18 And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals.	18 Ma quegli replicò: "Non sono io che metto sottosopra Israele, bensì tu e la casa di tuo padre, perché avete abbandonato i precetti del Signore e tu sei andato dietro ai Baal.
19 Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.”	19 Or dunque chiama a raccolta presso di me sul monte Carmelo tutto Israele e i quattrocentocinquanta profeti di Baal che mangiano alla mensa di Gezabele".
20 Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel.	20 Acab mandò a chiamare tutti i figli d'Israele e radunò i profeti sul monte Carmelo.
21 Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him.	21 Allora Elia s'avvicinò a tutto il popolo e disse: "Fino a quando voi barcollerete fra due parti? Se il Signore è Dio, andategli dietro; se lo è Baal, andate dietro a lui". Il popolo non gli rispose neppure una parola.
22 And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.	22 Elia riprese a dire al popolo: "Solo io sono rimasto come profeta del Signore, mentre i profeti di Baal sono quattrocentocinquanta!
23 Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.	23 Dateci due giovenchi: essi se ne scelgano uno, lo facciano a pezzi e lo mettano sulla legna, senza appiccarvi il fuoco. Io preparerò l'altro giovenco, lo metterò sulla legna e non vi appiccherò il fuoco.
24 Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.”	24 Voi invocherete il nome del vostro dio e io invocherò quello del Signore. Il dio che risponderà con il fuoco, quegli è Dio". L'intero popolo rispose: "Ben detto!".
25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.”	25 Allora Elia disse ai profeti di Baal: "Sceglietevi un giovenco e agite voi per primi, perché siete più numerosi. Invocate il nome del vostro dio, senza però appiccare il fuoco".
26 And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made.	26 Essi presero il giovenco, lo prepararono e poi invocarono il nome di Baal dal mattino fino a mezzogiorno dicendo: "O Baal, rispondici!". Non ci fu né voce né risposta. Frattanto essi danzavano, piegando il ginocchio davanti all'altare che avevano costruito.
27 And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.”	27 A mezzogiorno Elia incominciò a burlarsi di loro dicendo: "Gridate più forte perché egli è certamente dio, però forse è occupato o ha degli affari o è in viaggio; forse dorme e deve essere svegliato!".
28 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood.	28 Essi si misero a gridare più forte e a farsi incisioni con spade e lance, secondo la loro usanza, fino a versare sangue.
29 Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying.	29 Passato mezzogiorno, continuarono a smaniare fino al tempo di offrire l'oblazione; ma non si ebbe né voce né risposta né segno d'attenzione.
30 Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.	30 Allora Elia disse a tutto il popolo: "Avvicinatevi a me". E tutto il popolo gli si avvicinò ed egli ricostruì l'altare del Signore ch'era stato demolito.
31 And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”	31 Prese infatti dodici pietre, in corrispondenza del numero delle tribù dei figli di Giacobbe, cui il Signore aveva detto: "Il tuo nome è Israele!".
32 And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar.	32 Con le pietre costruì l'altare al nome del Signore e vi scavò intorno un canale che conteneva due misure di frumento.
33 And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood.	33 Accatastò la legna, fece a pezzi il giovenco e lo pose sopra la legna.
34 And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time.	34 Poi ordinò: "Riempite quattro brocche di acqua e versatela sopra l'olocausto e sulla legna". Essi fecero così. Di nuovo ordinò: "Fatelo per la seconda volta"; essi lo fecero. Aggiunse ancora: "Fatelo per la terza volta"; essi lo fecero.
35 And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water.	35 L'acqua si sparse intorno all'altare e riempì persino il canale.
36 And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept.	36 Giunto il tempo di offrire l'oblazione, il profeta Elia s'avvicinò e disse: "Signore, Dio di Abramo, d'Isacco e d'Israele, oggi appaia che tu sei Dio in Israele, che io sono tuo servo e che dietro tuo volere ho compiuto tutte queste cose.
37 Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.”	37 Esaudiscimi, o Signore, esaudiscimi e questo popolo saprà che tu, o Signore, sei Dio e che converti il loro cuore".
38 Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench.	38 Cadde il fuoco del Signore che consumò l'olocausto, la legna, le pietre e la polvere e prosciugò l'acqua ch'era nel canale.
39 And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!”	39 A tal vista, tutto il popolo si prostrò con la faccia per terra esclamando: "Il Signore è Dio, il Signore è Dio!".
40 And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there.	40 Elia allora ordinò: "Prendete i profeti di Baal, non ne scampi neppure uno". Elia li fece discendere al torrente Kison dove li sgozzò.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.”	41 Poi Elia disse ad Acab: "Risali, mangia e bevi, perché si ode già il rumore della pioggia".
42 Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees.	42 Mentre Acab risaliva per mangiare e bere, Elia salì sulla cima del Carmelo, si piegò verso terra e pose il volto fra le ginocchia.
43 And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.”	43 Poi disse al suo servo: "Orsù, va' e guarda in direzione del mare!". Quello andò, guardò e disse: "Non c'è nulla!". Elia replicò: "Ritornaci sette volte!".
44 And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’ ”	44 Alla settima volta, quegli riferì: "Ecco, una piccola nuvola, come una mano d'uomo, sale dal mare". Disse allora Elia: "Va' a dire ad Acab: "Attacca i cavalli e discendi affinché non ti colga la pioggia".
45 And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel.	45 In un baleno il cielo si oscurò per le nubi e il vento e piovve a dirotto. Acab salì sul carro e si recò a Izreèl.
46 And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel.	46 La mano del Signore fu sopra Elia che si cinse i fianchi e corse davanti ad Acab fino all'ingresso di Izreèl.
