Then Jacob called his sons, and he said to them: “Gather together, so that I may announce what will happen to you in the last days.1 Jacob llamó a sus hijos y dijo: «Juntaos, y os anunciaré lo que os ha de acontecer en días venideros:
Gather together and listen, O sons of Jacob. Listen to Israel, your father.2 Apiñaos y oíd, hijos de Jacob, y escuchad a Israel, vuestro padre.
Reuben, my firstborn, you are my strength and the beginning of my sorrow: first in gifts, greater in authority.3 Rubén, mi primogénito eres tú, mi vigor y las primicias de mi virilidad , plétora de pasión y de ímpetu,
You are being poured out like water, may you not increase. For you climbed onto your father’s bed, and you defiled his resting place.4 espumas como el agua: ¡Cuidado, no te desbordes! porque subiste al lecho de tu padre; entonces violaste mi tálamo al subir.
The brothers Simeon and Levi: vessels of iniquity waging war.5 Simeón y Leví, hermanos; llevaron al colmo la violencia con sus intrigas.
Let not my soul go by their counsel, nor my glory be within their meeting. For in their fury they killed a man, and in their self-will they undermined a wall.6 ¡En su conciliábulo no entres, alma mía; a su asamblea no te unas, corazón mío!, porque estando de malas, mataron hombres, y estando de buenas, desjarretaron toros.
Cursed be their fury, because it was obstinate, and their indignation, because it was harsh. I will divide them in Jacob, and I will scatter them in Israel.7 ¡Maldita su ira, por ser tan impetuosa, y su cólera, por ser tan cruel! Los dividiré en Jacob, y los dispersaré en Israel.
Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be at the necks of your enemies; the sons of your father will reverence you.8 A ti, Judá, te alabarán tus hermanos; tu mano en la cerviz de tus enemigos; inclínense a ti los hijos de tu padre.
Judah is a lion’s young. You have gone up to the prey, my son. While resting, you have lain like a lion. And just like a lioness, who would rouse him?9 Cachorro de león es Judá; de la presa, hijo mío, has vuelto; se recuesta, se echa cual león, o cual leona, ¿quién le hará alzar?
The scepter from Judah and the leader from his thigh will not be taken away, until he who will be sent arrives, and he will be the expectation of Gentiles.10 No se irá de Judá el báculo, el bastón de mando de entre tus piernas. hasta tanto que se le traiga el tributo y a quien rindan homenaje las naciones;
Tying his young colt to the vineyard, and his donkey, O my son, to the vine, he will wash his robe in wine, and his cloak in the blood of the grape.11 el que ata a la vid su borriquillo y a la cepa el pollino de su asna; lava en vino su vestimenta, y en sangre de uvas su sayo;
His eyes are more beautiful than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.12 el de los ojos encandilados de vino, el de los dientes blancos de leche.
Zebulun will live at the seashore and by the outpost of ships, reaching as far as Sidon.13 Zabulón habita en la ribera del mar, y es tripulante de barcos, a horcajadas sobre Sidón.
Issachar will be a strong donkey, reclining between the borders.14 Isacar es un borrico corpulento echado entre las aguaderas.
He saw that rest would be good, and that the land was excellent. And so he bent his shoulder to carry, and he became a servant under tribute.15 Aunque ve que el reposo es bueno, y que el suelo es agradable, ofrece su lomo a la carga y termina sometiéndose al trabajo.
Dan will judge his people just like any other tribe in Israel.16 Dan juzgará a su pueblo como cualquiera de las tribus de Israel.
Let Dan be a snake in the way, a viper in the path, biting the hooves of horses, so that his rider may fall backward.17 Sea Dan una culebra junto al camino, una víbora junto al sendero, que pica al caballo en los jarretes y cae su jinete de espaldas.
I will wait for your salvation, O Lord.18 En tu salvación espero, Yahveh.
Gad, being girded, will fight before him. And he himself will be girded backward.19 A Gad atracadores le atracan, pero él atraca su retaguardia.
Asher: his bread will be fat, and he will provide delicacies to the kings.20 Aser tiene pingüe su pan, y da manjares de rey
Naphtali is a stag sent forth, offering words of eloquent beauty.21 Neftalí es una cierva suelta, que da cervatillos hermosos.
Joseph is a growing son, a growing son and stately to behold; the daughters run back and forth on the wall.22 Un retoño es José, retoño junto a la fuente, cuyo vástagos trepan sobre el muro.
But those who held darts, provoked him, and they contend with him, and they envied him.23 Le molestan y acribillan, le asaltan los flecheros;
His bow sits in strength, and the bands of his arms and hands have been let loose by the hands of the mighty one of Jacob. From there he went forth as a pastor, the stone of Israel.24 pero es roto su arco violentamente y se aflojan los músculos de sus brazos por las manos del Fuerte de Jacob, por el Nombre del Pastor, la Piedra de Israel,
The God of your father will be your helper, and the Almighty will bless you with the blessings of heaven above, with the blessings of the abyss that lies beneath, with the blessings of the breasts and of the womb.25 por el Dios de tu padre, pues él te ayudará, el Dios Sadday, pues él te bendecirá con bendiciones de los cielos desde arriba, bendiciones del abismo que yace abajo, bendiciones de los pechos y del seno,
The blessings of your father are strengthened by the blessings of his fathers, until the desire of the hills of eternity shall arrive. May they be at the head of Joseph, and at the summit of the Nazarite, among his brothers.26 bendiciones de espigas y de frutos, amén de las bendiciones de los montes seculares, y el anhelo de los collados eternos. ¡Sean para la cabeza de José, y para la frente del consagrado entre sus hermanos!
Benjamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning he will eat the prey, and in the evening he will divide the spoil.”27 Benjamín, lobo rapaz; de mañana devora su presa, y a la tarde reparte el despojo.»
All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. These things their father spoke to them, and he blessed each one with their proper blessings.28 Todas estas son las tribus de Israel, doce en total, y esto es lo que les dijo su padre, bendiciéndoles a cada uno con su bendición correspondiente.
And he instructed them, saying: “I am being gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the double cave, which is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,29 Luego les dio este encargo: «Yo voy a reunirme con los míos. Sepultadme junto a mis padres en la cueva que está en el campo de Efrón el hitita,
opposite Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought, along with its field, from Ephron the Hittite, as a possession for burial.30 en la cueva que está en el campo de la Makpelá, enfrente de Mambré, en el país de Canaán, el campo que compró Abraham a Efrón el hitita, como propiedad sepulcral:
There they buried him, with his wife Sarah.” And there Isaac was buried with his wife Rebekah. There also Leah lies preserved.31 allí sepultaron a Abraham y a su mujer Sara; allí sepultaron a Isaac y a su mujer Rebeca, y allí sepulté yo a Lía.
And having finished these commands by which he instructed his sons, he drew his feet onto the bed, and he passed away.
