However, the serpent was more crafty than any of the creatures of the earth that the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Why has God instructed you, that you should not eat from every tree of Paradise?”1 Le serpent était le plus rusé de tous les animaux des champs que Yahvé Dieu avait faits.
The woman responded to him: “From the fruit of the trees which are in Paradise, we eat.2 La femme répondit au serpent: "Nous pouvons manger du fruit des arbres du jardin.
Yet truly, from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of Paradise, God has instructed us that we should not eat, and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we may die.”3 Mais du fruit de l'arbre qui est au milieu du jardin, Dieu adit: Vous n'en mangerez pas, vous n'ytoucherez pas, sous peine de mort."
Then the serpent said to the woman: “By no means will you die a death.4 Le serpent répliqua à la femme: "Pas du tout! Vous ne mourrez pas!
For God knows that, on whatever day you will eat from it, your eyes will be opened; and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.”5 Mais Dieu sait que, le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s'ouvriront et vous serez comme desdieux, qui connaissent le bien et le mal."
And so the woman saw that the tree was good to eat, and beautiful to the eyes, and delightful to consider. And she took from its fruit, and she ate. And she gave to her husband, who ate.6 La femme vit que l'arbre était bon à manger et séduisant à voir, et qu'il était, cet arbre, désirable pouracquérir le discernement.
And the eyes of them both were opened. And when they realized themselves to be naked, they joined together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.7 Alors leurs yeux à tous deux s'ouvrirent et ils connurent qu'ils étaient nus; ils cousirent des feuillesde figuier et se firent des pagnes.
And when they had heard the voice of the Lord God taking a walk in Paradise in the afternoon breeze, Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God in the midst of the trees of Paradise.8 Ils entendirent le pas de Yahvé Dieu qui se promenait dans le jardin à la brise du jour, et l'homme etsa femme se cachèrent devant Yahvé Dieu parmi les arbres du jardin.
And the Lord God called Adam and said to him: “Where are you?”9 Yahvé Dieu appela l'homme: "Où es-tu?" Dit-il.
And he said, “I heard your voice in Paradise, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and so I hid myself.”10 "J'ai entendu ton pas dans le jardin, répondit l'homme; j'ai eu peur parce que je suis nu et je me suiscaché."
He said to him, “Then who told you that you were naked, if you have not eaten of the tree from which I instructed you that you should not eat?”11 Il reprit: "Et qui t'a appris que tu étais nu? Tu as donc mangé de l'arbre dont je t'avais défendu demanger!"
And Adam said, “The woman, whom you gave to me as a companion, gave to me from the tree, and I ate.”12 L'homme répondit: "C'est la femme que tu as mise auprès de moi qui m'a donné de l'arbre, et j'aimangé!"
And the Lord God said to the woman, “Why have you done this?” And she responded, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”13 Yahvé Dieu dit à la femme: "Qu'as-tu fait là?"
And the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, you are cursed among all living things, even the wild beasts of the earth. Upon your breast shall you travel, and the ground shall you eat, all the days of your life.14 Alors Yahvé Dieu dit au serpent: "Parce que tu as fait cela, maudit sois-tu entre tous les bestiaux ettoutes les bêtes sauvages. Tu marcheras sur ton ventre et tu mangeras de la terre tous les jours de ta vie.
I will put enmities between you and the woman, between your offspring and her offspring. She will crush your head, and you will lie in wait for her heel.”15 Je mettrai une hostilité entre toi et la femme, entre ton lignage et le sien.
To the woman, he also said: “I will multiply your labors and your conceptions. In pain shall you give birth to sons, and you shall be under your husband’s power, and he shall have dominion over you.”16 A la femme, il dit: "Je multiplierai les peines de tes grossesses, dans la peine tu enfanteras des fils.Ta convoitise te poussera vers ton mari et lui dominera sur toi."
Yet truly, to Adam, he said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, from which I instructed you that you should not eat, cursed is the land that you work. In hardship shall you eat from it, all the days of your life.17 A l'homme, il dit: "Parce que tu as écouté la voix de ta femme et que tu as mangé de l'arbre dont jet'avais interdit de manger, maudit soit le sol à cause de toi! A force de peines tu en tireras subsistance tous lesjours de ta vie.
Thorns and thistles shall it produce for you, and you shall eat the plants of the earth.18 Il produira pour toi épines et chardons et tu mangeras l'herbe des champs.
By the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, until you return to the earth from which you were taken. For dust you are, and unto dust you shall return.”19 A la sueur de ton visage tu mangeras ton pain, jusqu'à ce que tu retournes au sol, puisque tu en fustiré.
And Adam called the name of his wife, ‘Eve,’ because she was the mother of all the living.20 L'homme appela sa femme "Eve", parce qu'elle fut la mère de tous les vivants.
The Lord God also made for Adam and his wife garments from skins, and he clothed them.21 Yahvé Dieu fit à l'homme et à sa femme des tuniques de peau et les en vêtit.
And he said: “Behold, Adam has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Therefore, now perhaps he may put forth his hand and also take from the tree of life, and eat, and live in eternity.”22 Puis Yahvé Dieu dit: "Voilà que l'homme est devenu comme l'un de nous, pour connaître le bien etle mal! Qu'il n'étende pas maintenant la main, ne cueille aussi de l'arbre de vie, n'en mange et ne vive pourtoujours!"
And so the Lord God sent him away from the Paradise of enjoyment, in order to work the earth from which he was taken.23 Et Yahvé Dieu le renvoya du jardin d'Eden pour cultiver le sol d'où il avait été tiré.
And he cast out Adam. And in front of the Paradise of enjoyment, he placed the Cherubim with a flaming sword, turning together, to guard the way to the tree of life.24 Il bannit l'homme et il posta devant le jardin d'Eden les chérubins et la flamme du glaive fulgurantpour garder le chemin de l'arbre de vie.
