Genesis 26

1 Then, when a famine arose over the land, after that barrenness which had happened in the days of Abraham, Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Palestinians, in Gerar.	1 Or ci fu una carestia nel paese, oltre la carestia precedente, che era avvenuta ai tempi di Abramo, onde Isacco andò da Abimèlech, re dei Filistei, a Gerar.
2 And the Lord appeared to him, and he said: “Do not descend into Egypt, but rest in the land that I will tell you,	2 Gli apparve allora il Signore e gli disse: "Non scendere in Egitto: accampati nella regione che io ti dirò.
3 and sojourn in it, and I will be with you, and I will bless you. For to you and to your offspring I will give all these regions, completing the oath that I promised to Abraham your father.	3 Sii ospite in questo paese e io sarò con te e ti benedirò, perché a te e alla tua discendenza io darò tutti questi paesi e farò così sussistere il giuramento che ho fatto ad Abramo tuo padre.
4 And I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven. And I will give to your posterity all these regions. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed,	4 Moltiplicherò la tua discendenza come le stelle del cielo e darò alla tua discendenza tutti questi paesi e tutte le nazioni della terra si diranno benedette per la tua discendenza;
5 because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my precepts and commandments, and observed the ceremonies and the laws.”	5 in ricompensa del fatto che Abramo ubbidì alla mia voce e osservò ciò che io gli avevo dato da osservare: i miei comandamenti, le mie istituzioni e le mie leggi".
6 And so Isaac remained in Gerar.	6 Così Isacco dimorò a Gerar.
7 And when he was questioned by the men of that place about his wife, he answered, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to confess her to be his mate, thinking that perhaps they would put him to death because of her beauty.	7 Gli uomini del luogo lo interrogarono intorno a sua moglie ed egli disse: "E' mia sorella!", infatti aveva timore di dire "mia moglie", pensando che gli uomini del luogo lo uccidessero, per causa di Rebecca, perché essa era avvenente di aspetto.
8 And when very many days had passed, and he had remained in the same place, Abimelech, king of the Palestinians, gazing through a window, saw him being playful with Rebekah, his wife.	8 Quando erano già passati lunghi giorni colà, Abimèlech, re dei Filistei, si affacciò alla finestra e vide che Isacco stava accarezzando la propria moglie Rebecca.
9 And summoning him, he said: “It is clear that she is your wife. Why did you falsely claim her to be your sister?” He answered, “I was afraid, lest I might die because of her.”	9 Allora Abimèlech chiamò Isacco e disse: "Non c'è dubbio che costei sia tua moglie; e come mai tu hai detto: "E' mia sorella"?". Gli rispose Isacco: "Perché mi son detto: "Che non abbia a morire per causa di lei!".
10 And Abimelech said: “Why have you burdened us? Someone from the people could have lain with your wife, and you would have brought a great sin upon us.” And he instructed all the people, saying,	10 Riprese Abimèlech: "Che cosa mai è questo che tu hai fatto? Poco ci mancava che qualcuno del popolo giacesse con tua moglie e tu attirassi così su di noi una colpa!".
11 “Whoever will touch the wife of this man will die a death.”	11 Allora Abimèlech diede ordine a tutto il popolo in questi termini: "Colui che tocca quest'uomo o la sua moglie sarà senz'altro messo a morte!".
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and he found, in that same year, one hundredfold. And the Lord blessed him.	12 Poi Isacco fece una semina in quel paese, e raccolse quell'anno una misura centuplicata. Il Signore lo benedisse tanto,
13 And the man was enriched, and he continued prospering as well as increasing, until he became very great.	13 che quest'uomo diventò grande e continuò a crescere finché fu grande assai,
14 Likewise, he had possessions of sheep and of herds, and a very large family. Because of this, the Palestinians envied him,	14 e venne a possedere greggi di pecore e armenti di buoi e numerosa servitù, onde i Filistei cominciarono a invidiarlo.
15 so, at that time, they obstructed all the wells that the servants of his father Abraham had dug, filling them with soil.	15 Intanto tutti i pozzi che avevano scavato i servi di suo padre, ai tempi di Abramo, suo padre, i Filistei li avevano turati e li avevano riempiti di terra.
16 It reached a point where Abimelech himself said to Isaac, “Move away from us, for you have become very much more powerful than we.”	16 Allora Abimèlech disse ad Isacco: "Vattene via da noi, perché tu sei troppo più potente di noi!".
17 And departing, he then went toward the torrent of Gerar, and he dwelt there.	17 Isacco andò via di là, si accampò nel torrente di Gerar e vi si stabilì.
18 Again, he dug up other wells, which the servants of his father Abraham had dug, and which, after his death, the Philistines had formerly obstructed. And he called them by the same names that his father had called them before.	18 Isacco riscavò i pozzi d'acqua che avevano scavato ai giorni di Abramo suo padre, e che i Filistei avevano turato dopo la morte di Abramo, e li denominò con gli stessi nomi con cui li aveva chiamati suo padre.
19 And they dug in the torrent, and they found living water.	19 I servi di Isacco scavarono poi nella valle e vi trovarono un pozzo di acqua viva.
20 But in that place also the shepherds of Gerar argued against the shepherds of Isaac, by saying, “It is our water.” For this reason, he called the name of the well, because of what had happened, ‘Calumny.’	20 Ma i pastori di Gerar vennero a contesa con i pastori di Isacco, dicendo: "L'acqua è nostra!". Ond'egli chiamò il pozzo Esech, perché quelli avevano litigato con lui.
21 Then they dug up yet another one. And over that one also they fought, and he called it, ‘Enmity.’	21 Scavarono un altro pozzo, ma quelli vennero a contesa anche per questo, ond'egli lo chiamò Sitna.
22 Advancing from there, he dug another well, over which they did not contend. And so he called its name, ‘Latitude,’ saying, “Now the Lord has expanded us and caused us to increase across the land.”	22 Allora si mosse di là e scavò un altro pozzo, per il quale non vennero a contesa, ond'egli lo chiamò Recobot e disse: "Ormai il Signore ci ha dato spazio libero, sicché noi possiamo prosperare nel paese".
23 Then he ascended from that place into Beersheba,	23 Poi di là egli salì a Bersabea,
24 where the Lord appeared to him on the same night, saying: “I am the God of Abraham your father. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you, and I will multiply your offspring because of my servant Abraham.”	24 e durante quella notte gli apparve il Signore e disse: "Io sono il Dio di Abramo, di tuo padre: non temere, perché io sono con te. Ti benedirò e moltiplicherò la tua discendenza in grazia di Abramo, mio servo".
25 And so he built an altar there. And he invoked the name of the Lord, and he stretched out his tent. And he instructed his servants to dig a well.	25 Allora egli costruì colà un altare e invocò il nome del Signore. Ivi rizzò la sua tenda, mentre i suoi servi stavano scavando un pozzo.
26 When Abimelech, and Ahuzzath, his friend, and Phicol, the leader of the military, had arrived from Gerar to that place,	26 Nel frattempo Abimèlech da Gerar era andato da lui, insieme con Acuzzat, suo amico, e Picol, capo del suo esercito.
27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, a man whom you hate, and whom you have expelled from among you?”	27 Isacco disse loro: "Come mai siete venuti da me, mentre voi mi odiate e mi avete cacciato da voi?".
28 And they responded: “We saw that the Lord is with you, and therefore we said: Let there be an oath between us, and let us initiate a pact,	28 Gli risposero: "Abbiamo proprio visto che il Signore è con te e abbiamo detto: Vi sia un giuramento tra di noi: tra noi da una parte e te dall'altra parte, e lascia che concludiamo un patto con te;
29 so that you may not do us any kind of harm, just as we have touched nothing of yours, and have not caused any injury to you, but with peace we released you, augmented by the blessing of the Lord.”	29 che tu non ci farai del male, a quel modo che noi non ti abbiamo toccato e a quel modo che noi non ti abbiamo fatto se non il bene e ti abbiamo mandato via in pace. Tu ora sei un uomo benedetto dal Signore".
30 Therefore, he made them a feast, and after the food and drink,	30 Egli fece allora un convito per loro e mangiarono e bevvero.
31 arising in the morning, they swore to one another. And Isaac sent them away peacefully to their own place.	31 Alzatisi alla mattina presto fecero giuramento l'uno all'altro, poi Isacco li licenziò e quelli partirono da lui in pace.
32 Then, behold, on the same day the servants of Isaac came, reporting to him about a well which they had dug, and saying: “We have found water.”	32 Or proprio quel giorno arrivarono i servi di Isacco e l'informarono a proposito del pozzo che avevano scavato e gli dissero: "Abbiamo trovato l'acqua!".
33 Therefore, he called it, ‘Abundance.’ And the name of the city was established as ‘Beersheba,’ even to the present day.	33 Allora egli lo chiamò Sibea. Per questo il nome della città fu Bersabea, fino al giorno d'oggi.
34 In truth, at forty years of age, Esau took wives: Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon, of the same place.	34 Quando Esaù ebbe quarant'anni, prese in moglie Giudit, figlia di Beeri l'hittita, e Basemat, figlia di Elon l'hittita.
35 And they both offended the mind of Isaac and Rebekah.	35 Esse divennero l'intimo rammarico per Isacco e per Rebecca.
