1 Now Abraham was old and of many days. And the Lord had blessed him in all things.	1 Постарівся віком Авраам, і Господь благословив Авраама в усьому.
2 And he said to the elder servant of his house, who was in charge of all that he had: “Place your hand under my thigh,	2 Тоді Авраам сказав своєму слузі, найстаршому в його господі, що правив усім його маєтком: Поклади лишень руку під моє стегно.
3 so that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.	3 Я заклинаю тебе Господом, Богом неба й Богом землі, що не візьмеш ти моєму синові жінку з дочок ханаанян, серед яких я перебуваю,
4 But that you will proceed to my land and kindred, and from there take a wife for my son Isaac.”	4 а підеш у мій край, до рідні моєї, і візьмеш жінку синові моєму Ісаакові.
5 The servant responded, “If the woman is not willing to come with me into this land, must I lead your son back to the place from which you departed?”	5 Слуга ж мовив до нього: А якщо жінка не захоче йти за мною в край цей, чи маю відвести твого сина назад у край, звідки ти вийшов?
6 And Abraham said: “Beware that you never lead my son back to that place.	6 Тоді Авраам відповів йому: Гляди, щоб ти не відводив туди мого сина!
7 The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my nativity, who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ himself will send his Angel before you, and you will take from there a wife for my son.	7 Господь, Бог неба, який вивів мене з дому мого батька та з мого рідного краю, і який говорив до мене та клявсь мені словами: Потомству твоєму дам я цю землю, — він пошле свого ангела перед тобою і візьмеш звідтіля жінку моєму синові.
8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, you will not be held by the oath. Only do not lead my son back to that place.”	8 А як жінка не захоче йти з тобою, то ти будеш вільний від тієї клятви, що нею мені поклявся. Тільки сина мого туди не повертай!
9 Therefore, the servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham, his lord, and he swore to him on his word.	9 І поклав слуга руку свою під стегно Авраама, свого пана, і поклявся йому в тому ділі.
10 And he took ten camels from his lord’s herd, and he went forth, carrying with him things from all of his goods. And he set out, and continued on, to the city of Nahor, in Mesopotamia.	10 По тому взяв слуга десять верблюдів з-поміж верблюдів свого пана й вирушив у дорогу; з найліпшим, що лиш було в його пана знявсь він і рушив у дорогу в Арам Нагараїм, у місто Нахора.
11 And when he had made the camels lie down outside of the town, near a well of water, in the evening, at the time when women are accustomed to go out to draw water, he said:	11 І поставив він верблюдів поза містом біля криниці надвечір, коли жінки виходять брати воду,
12 “O Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, meet with me today, I beg you, and show mercy to my lord Abraham.	12 та й мовив: Господи Боже мого пана Авраама! Пощасти мені сьогодні, молю, і вчини милость моєму панові Авраамові.
13 Behold, I stand near the fountain of water, and the daughters of the inhabitants of this city will go forth to draw water.	13 Ось я стою коло джерела води; дочки горожан виходять брати воду.
14 Therefore, the girl to whom I will say, ‘Tip your pitcher, so that I may drink,’ and she will respond, ‘Drink. In fact, I will give your camels a drink also,’ the same one is she whom you have prepared for your servant Isaac. And by this, I will understand that you have shown mercy to my lord.”	14 Нехай дівчина, якій я скажу: Нахили, з ласки, твій жбан, щоб я напився, а вона скаже: Пий! Я ще й верблюдів твоїх понапуваю, — буде та, що її ти призначив слузі твоєму Ісаакові, і я по тому знатиму, що ти вчинив милость із моїм паном.
15 But he had not yet completed these words within himself, when, behold, Rebekah went out, the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham, having a pitcher on her shoulder.	15 Тож і сталося, що він ще й не скінчив говорити, як ось виходить із жбаном на своїх плечах Ревека, що народилась у Бетуела, сина Мілки, жінки Нахора, Авраамового брата.
16 She was an exceedingly elegant girl, and a most beautiful virgin, and unknown by man. And she descended to the spring, and she filled her pitcher, and then was returning.	16 Була то дівчина прегарна з виду, незаймана, ні мужа ще не знала. Тож зійшла вона до джерела і, набравши повний жбан води, вийшла нагору.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, and he said, “Provide me with a little water to drink from your pitcher.”	17 Слуга побіг їй назустріч та й мовив: Дай мені, з ласки своєї, трохи напитися з твого жбану!
18 And she responded, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly brought down the pitcher on her arm, and she gave him a drink.	18 А вона: Пий, добродію! І спустила хутенько жбан на свою руку й дала йому напитися.
19 And after he drank, she added, “In fact, I will draw water for your camels also, until they all drink.”	19 Як же скінчила його напувати, каже: Я ще і твоїм верблюдам начерпаю, поки не нап’ються.
20 And pouring out the pitcher into the troughs, she ran back to the well to draw water; and having drawn, she gave it to all the camels.	20 І скоро випорожнила свій жбан у пійло, побігла знову до криниці, щоб набрати води, і налляла всім його верблюдам.
21 But he was contemplating her silently, wanting to know whether the Lord had caused his journey to prosper or not	21 А чоловік придивлявся до неї мовчки, цікавий знати, чи пощастить йому Господь у дорозі, чи ні.
22 Then, after the camels drank, the man took out gold earrings, weighing two shekels, and the same number of bracelets, ten shekels in weight.	22 Коли ж верблюди перестали пити, взяв чоловік золоту каблучку, вагою пів шекля, та дві запинки їй на руки, вагою десять шеклів золота,
23 And he said to her: “Whose daughter are you? Tell me, is there any place in your father’s house to lodge?”	23 і спитав: Чия ти дочка? Скажи мені, будь ласка, чи є в домі твого батька місце для нас переночувати?
24 She responded, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, to whom she gave birth for Nahor.”	24 Вона ж йому відповіла: Я дочка Бетуела, сина Мілки, якого вона Нахарові вродила.
25 And she continued, saying, “There is very much straw and hay with us, and a spacious place to stay.”	25 Далі сказала йому: Є в нас доволі й соломи й паші, та й місця переночувати.
26 The man bowed himself down, and he adored the Lord,	26 Тут чоловік схилив голову й, поклонившись Господеві,
27 saying, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, who has not taken away his mercy and truth from my lord, and who has led me on a direct journey to the house of the brother of my lord.”	27 мовив: Благословен Господь Бог пана мого Авраама, що не відмовив милости своєї і вірности своєї моєму панові! Мене ж Господь привів до дому братів мого пана.
28 And so the girl ran, and she reported all that she had heard in the house of her mother.	28 Побігла дівчина й оповіла в хаті матері своєї, що сталося.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother, named Laban, who went out quickly to the man, where the spring was.	29 Був же в Ревеки брат, на ім’я Лаван. Метнувся Лаван до чоловіка надвір, до джерела.
30 And when he had seen the earrings and bracelets in his sister’s hands, and he had heard all the words being repeated, “This is what the man spoke to me,” he came to the man who stood by the camels and near the spring of water,	30 Як тільки він побачив каблучку й запинки на руках у своєї сестри та як почув слова Ревеки, сестри своєї, мовляв, ось так говорив чоловік до мене, то прийшов він до чоловіка, який стояв ще при джерелі коло верблюдів,
31 and he said to him: “Enter, O blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside? I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels.”	31 і мовив: Увійди, благословенний Господом! Чого стоїш надворі? Я ж напоготовив господу й місце для верблюдів.
32 And he brought him into his guest quarters. And he unharnessed the camels, and he distributed straw and hay, and water to wash his feet and that of the men who arrived with him.	32 Увійшов цей чоловік у господу, а він (Лаван) порозвантажував верблюдів, дав соломи й корму верблюдам, та й води помити ноги його й людей, що були з ним.
33 And bread was set out in his sight. But he said, “I will not eat, until I have spoken my words.” He answered him, “Speak.”	33 По тому поставив перед ним їжу. але той сказав: Не їстиму, поки не оповім своєї справи. Лаван же відрік: Говори.
34 Then he said: “I am the servant of Abraham.	34 Він і заговорив: Я слуга Авраама.
35 And the Lord has blessed my lord greatly, and he has become great. And he has given him sheep and oxen, silver and gold, men servants and women servants, camels and donkeys.	35 Господь поблагословив вельми мого пана й він зробився великим; Господь дав йому овець і худоби, срібла й золота, рабів і рабинь, верблюдів та ослів.
36 And Sarah, the wife of my lord, has given birth to a son for my lord in her old age, and he has given him all that he had.	36 Та й Сара, жінка мого пана, як була вже старенька, вродила сина моєму панові, й цей дав йому все, що було його.
37 And my lord made me swear, saying: ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell.	37 І заприсягнув мене мій пан, кажучи так: Не візьмеш жінки синові моєму з дочок ханаанян, що в їхнім краю я проживаю,
38 But you shall travel to my father’s house, and you shall take a wife of my own kindred for my son.’	38 а тільки підеш у господу батька мого й до роду мого та й візьмеш жінку моєму синові.
39 But truly, I answered my lord, ‘What if the woman is not willing to come with me?’	39 Тоді сказав я до свого пана: А може та жінка не піде за мною?
40 ‘The Lord,’ he said, ‘in whose sight I walk, will send his Angel with you, and he will direct your way. And you shall take a wife for my son from my own kindred and from my father’s house.	40 Та він мені відповів: Господь, перед яким я ходжу, пошле ангела свого з тобою і пощастить твоїй дорозі; і ти візьмеш жінку синові моєму з мого роду й з господи батька мого.
41 But you will be innocent of my curse, if, when you will arrive at my close relatives, they will not grant this to you.’	41 Тоді ти будеш вільний від присяги мені, коли підеш до мого роду; і коли вони тобі її не дадуть — тоді ти будеш вільний від присяги мені.
42 And so, today I arrived at the well of water, and I said: ‘O Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, if you have directed my way, in which I now walk,	42 От і прибув я нині до джерела й мовив: Господи Боже мого пана Авраама! Покажи, благаю, чи доброзичиш ти мені в дорозі, що її оце верстаю.
43 behold, I stand next to the well of water, and the virgin, who will go forth to draw water, will hear from me, “Give me a little water to drink from your pitcher.”	43 Ось я стою коло джерела води: нехай та дівчина, що вийде брати воду, і якій я скажу: Дай мені, будь ласка, трохи води напитися з твого жбану,
44 And she will say to me, “You drink, and I will also draw for your camels.” Let the same be the woman, whom the Lord has prepared for the son of my lord.’	44 а вона до мене скаже: І ти пий, і ще твоїм верблюдам начерпаю — нехай вона буде та жінка, що її Господь призначив для сина мого пана.
45 And while I thought over these things silently within myself, Rebekah appeared, arriving with a pitcher, which she carried on her shoulder. And she descended to the spring and drew water. And I said to her, ‘Give me a little to drink.’	45 Ще не скінчив я й говорити сам до себе, аж ось виходить Ревека з своїм жбаном на плечі; спустилась до джерела й набрала води, а я тут до неї і кажу: Дай мені, будь ласка, напитися!
46 And she quickly let down the pitcher from her arm, and said to me, ‘You drink, and to your camels I will also distribute drinking water.’ I drank, and she watered the camels.	46 Зняла вона хутенько свій жбан з-над себе й каже: Пий, я і твоїх верблюдів теж понапуваю. Тож напивсь я, а вона понапувала й верблюдів.
47 And I questioned her, saying, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she responded, ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ And so, I hung the earrings on her, to adorn her face, and I put the bracelets on her hands.	47 Тоді я її спитав: Чия ти дочка? Вона ж відповіла: Дочка я Бетуела, сина Нахора, якого вродила йому Мілка. Тоді я наклав їй на ніс каблучку й запинки на її руки,
48 And falling prostrate, I adored the Lord, blessing the Lord, the God of my lord Abraham, who has led me along the straight path so as to take the daughter of my lord’s brother to his son.	48 та й схилив я голову і, поклонившись лицем Господеві до землі, благословив Господа Бога мого пана Авраама, що привів мене певною дорогою взяти дочку брата мого пана для його сина.
49 For this reason, if you would act according to mercy and truth with my lord, tell me so. But if it pleases you otherwise, say that to me also, so that I may go either to the right, or to the left.”	49 А тепер, коли ви хочете зробити моєму панові честь і шану, повідайте мені, а коли ні, то дайте знати, щоб звернув або праворуч, або ліворуч.
50 And Laban and Bethuel responded: “A word has proceeded from the Lord. We are not able to speak anything else to you, beyond what pleases him.	50 Лаван же й Бетуел у відповідь сказали: Від Господа пішло це діло. Не можемо тобі нічого сказати.
51 Lo, Rebekah is in your sight. Take her and continue on, and let her be the wife of the son of your lord, just as the Lord has spoken.”	51 Оце Ревека перед тобою. Візьми (її) і йди, і нехай вона буде жінкою синові твого пана, як це присудив Господь.
52 When Abraham’s servant had heard this, falling down to the ground, he adored the Lord.	52 Коли слуга Авраама почув ці слова, поклонився аж до землі Господеві,
53 And bringing forth vessels of silver and gold, as well as garments, he gave them to Rebekah as a tribute. Likewise, he offered gifts to her brothers and her mother.	53 і вийняв слуга золоті та срібні речі й одежу й дав Ревеці; а братові й матері її дав коштовні подарунки.
54 And a banquet began, and they feasted and drank together, and they lodged there. And rising up in the morning, the servant said, “Release me, so that I may go to my lord.”	54 І їли вони й пили, він і ті люди, що були з ним, та й переночувавши, встали вранці; тож він каже: Пустіте мене до мого пана.
55 And her brothers and mother responded, “Let the girl remain for at least ten days with us, and after that, she will continue on.”	55 Однак її брати й мати сказали: Нехай побуде з нами дівчина ще кілька днів, з десять, а потім піде.
56 “Do not be willing,” he said, “to delay me, for the Lord has directed my way. Release me, so that I may journey to my lord.”	56 Він же відповів їм: Не баріть мене. Пощастив Господь моїй дорозі, тож і ви пустіте мене, нехай піду до свого пана.
57 And they said, “Let us call the girl, and ask her will.”	57 Вони ж сказали: Прикличмо дівчину й її саму спитаймо.
58 And when, having been called, she arrived, they wanted to know, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.”	58 Тож прикликали Ревеку й кажуть до неї: Чи підеш ти з цим чоловіком? А вона відповіла: Піду!
59 Therefore, they released her and her nurse, and the servant of Abraham and his companions,	59 І відпустили Ревеку, сестру свою з її нянькою, та й Авраамового слугу з його людьми.
60 wishing prosperity for their sister, by saying: “You are our sister. May you increase to thousands of thousands. And may your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.”	60 При тому поблагословили вони Ревеку і промовили: Ой ти, сестрице наша, стань тьмою тисяч: Нехай твоє потомство займе ворота своїх ворогів!
61 And so, Rebekah and her maids, riding upon camels, followed the man, who quickly returned to his lord.	61 І вибралася Ревека зо слугинями своїми, і сівши на верблюдів, поїхали вони за чоловіком; отак узяв слуга Ревеку й пустився в дорогу.
62 Then, at the same time, Isaac was walking along the way that leads to the well, whose name is: ‘of the One who lives and who sees.’ For he dwelt in the southern land.	62 А Ісаак прийшов був тоді з дороги до криниці Лахаї-Рої, бо він жив у краї Негев.
63 And he had gone out to meditate in the field, as daylight was now declining. And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw camels advancing from afar.	63 Раз вийшов Ісаак підвечір пройтися в полі. Підвів свої очі й бачить — ось ідуть верблюди.
64 Likewise, Rebekah, having seen Isaac, descended from the camel.	64 Ревека також підняла очі й, побачивши Ісаака, зійшла з верблюда,
65 And she said to the servant, “Who is that man who advances to meet us through the field?” And he said to her, “That is my lord.” And so, quickly taking up her cloak, she covered herself.	65 та й каже до слуги: Хто то цей чоловік, що йде полем нам назустріч? Слуга ж відрік: То мій пан. Тоді вона взяла намітку та й накрилась.
66 Then the servant explained to Isaac all that he had done.	66 І розповів слуга Ісаакові все, що вчинив був.
67 And he led her into the tent of Sarah his mother, and he accepted her as wife. And he loved her so very much, that it tempered the sorrow which befell him at his mother’s death.	67 Тоді ввів її Ісаак у шатро Сари, своєї матері, і взяв він Ревеку та й стала вона йому за жінку. Він же полюбив її, і було це для нього розрадою після смерти матері своєї.
