1 Now Sarai, the wife of Abram, had not conceived children. But, having an Egyptian handmaid named Hagar,	1 OR Sarai, moglie di Abramo, non gli partoriva figliuoli;
2 she said to her husband: “Behold, the Lord has closed me, lest I give birth. Enter to my handmaid, so that perhaps I may receive sons of her at least.” And when he agreed to her supplication,	2 ed avendo una serva egizia, nominata Agar, disse ad Abramo: Ecco, ora il Signore mi ha fatta sterile, tal che non posso far figliuoli; deh! entra dalla mia serva; forse avrò progenie da lei. Ed Abramo acconsentì alla voce di Sarai.
3 she took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, ten years after they began to live in the land of Canaan, and she gave her to her husband as a wife.	3 Sarai adunque, moglie di Abramo, prese Agar egizia, sua serva, dopo che Abramo fu abitato nel paese di Canaan lo spazio di dieci anni, e la diede ad Abramo suo marito, da essergli per moglie
4 And he entered to her. But when she saw that she had conceived, she despised her mistress.	4 Ed egli entrò da lei, ed ella concepette; e, veggendo che avea conceputo, sprezzò la sua padrona.
5 And Sarai said to Abram: “You have acted unfairly against me. I gave my handmaid into your bosom, who, when she saw that she had conceived, held me in contempt. May the Lord judge between me and you.”	5 E Sarai disse ad Abramo: L’ingiuria ch’è fatta a me è sopra te; io ti ho data la mia serva in seno; ed ella, veggendo che ha conceputo, mi sprezza; il Signore giudichi fra me e te.
6 Abram responded to her by saying, “Behold, your handmaid is in your hand to treat as it pleases you.” And so, when Sarai afflicted her, she took flight.	6 Ed Abramo rispose a Sarai: Ecco, la tua serva è in mano tua; falle come ti piacerà. Sarai adunque l’afflisse; laonde ella se ne fuggì dal suo cospetto
7 And when the Angel of the Lord had found her, near the fountain of water in the wilderness, which is on the way to Shur in the desert,	7 E l’Angelo del Signore la trovò presso di una fonte d’acqua, nel deserto, presso della fonte ch’è in su la via di Sur.
8 he said to her: “Hagar, handmaid of Sarai, where have you come from? And where will you go?” And she answered, “I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress.”	8 E le disse: Agar, serva di Sarai, onde vieni? ed ove vai? Ed ella rispose: Io me ne fuggo dal cospetto di Sarai, mia padrona.
9 And the Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and humble yourself under her hand.”	9 E l’Angelo del Signore le disse: Ritornatene alla tua padrona, ed umiliati sotto la sua mano
10 And again he said, “I will multiply your offspring continuously, and they will not be numbered because of their multitude.”	10 L’Angelo del Signore le disse ancora: Io moltiplicherò grandemente la tua progenie; e non si potrà annoverare, per la moltitudine.
11 But thereafter he said: “Behold, you have conceived, and you will give birth to a son. And you shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has heard your affliction.	11 L’Angelo del Signore le disse oltre a ciò: Ecco, tu sei gravida, e partorirai un figliuolo, al quale poni nome Ismaele; perciocchè il Signore ha udita la tua afflizione.
12 He will be a wild man. His hand will be against all, and all hands will be against him. And he will pitch his tents away from the region of all his brothers.”	12 Ed esso sarà un uomo simigliante ad un asino salvatico; la man sua sarà contro a tutti, e la man di tutti contro a lui; ed egli abiterà dirimpetto a tutti i suoi fratelli.
13 Then she called upon the name of the Lord who had spoken to her: “You are the God who has seen me.” For she said, “Certainly, here I have seen the back of the one who sees me.”	13 Allora Agar chiamò il nome del Signore che parlava con lei: Tu sei l’Iddio della veduta; perciocchè disse: Ho io pur qui ancora veduto, dopo la mia visione?
14 Because of this, she called that well: ‘The well of the one who lives and who sees me.’ The same is between Kadesh and Bered.	14 Perciò quel pozzo è stato nominato: Il pozzo del Vivente che mi vede; ecco, egli è fra Cades e Bered
15 And Hagar gave birth to a son for Abram, who called his name Ishmael.	15 Ed Agar partorì un figliuolo ad Abramo; ed Abramo nominò il suo figliuolo, che Agar avea partorito, Ismaele.
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael for him.	16 Ed Abramo era di età d’ottantasei anni, quando Agar gli partorì Ismaele
