Genesis 13

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Therefore, Abram ascended from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, toward the southern region.1 From Egypt Abram went up to the Negeb with his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot accompanied him.
But he was very wealthy by the possession of gold and silver.2 Now Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold.
And he returned by the way that he came, from the meridian into Bethel, all the way to the place where before he had pitched his tent, between Bethel and Hai.3 From the Negeb he traveled by stages toward Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly stood,
There, at the place of the altar he had made before, he again called upon the name of the Lord.4 the site where he had first built the altar; and there he invoked the LORD by name.
But Lot also, who was with Abram, had flocks of sheep, and cattle, and tents.5 Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents,
Neither was the land able to contain them, so that they might dwell together. Indeed, their substance was so great that they could not live in common.6 so that the land could not support them if they stayed together; their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.
And then there also arose a conflict between the shepherds of Abram and of Lot. Now at that time the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in that land.7 There were quarrels between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and those of Lot's. (At this time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were occupying the land.)
Therefore, Abram said to Lot: “I ask you, let there be no quarrel between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds. For we are brothers.8 So Abram said to Lot: "Let there be no strife between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are kinsmen.
Behold, the entire land is before your eyes. Withdraw from me, I beg you. If you will go to the left, I will take the right. If you choose the right, I will pass to the left.”9 Is not the whole land at your disposal? Please separate from me. If you prefer the left, I will go to the right; if you prefer the right, I will go to the left."
And so Lot, lifting up his eyes, saw all the region around the Jordan, which was thoroughly irrigated, before the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It was like the Paradise of the Lord, and it was like Egypt, approaching toward Zoar.10 Lot looked about and saw how well watered the whole Jordan Plain was as far as Zoar, like the LORD'S own garden, or like Egypt. (This was before the LORD had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
And Lot chose for himself the region around the Jordan, and he withdrew by way of the east. And they were divided, one brother from the other.11 Lot, therefore, chose for himself the whole Jordan Plain and set out eastward. Thus they separated from each other;
Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan. In truth, Lot stayed in the towns that were around the Jordan, and he lived in Sodom.12 Abram stayed in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the Plain, pitching his tents near Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were very wicked, and they were sinners before the Lord beyond measure.13 Now the inhabitants of Sodom were very wicked in the sins they committed against the LORD.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot was divided from him: “Lift up your eyes, and gaze out from the place where you are now, to the north and to the meridian, to the east and to the west.14 After Lot had left, the LORD said to Abram: "Look about you, and from where you are, gaze to the north and south, east and west;
All the land that you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring even forever.15 all the land that you see I will give to you and your descendants forever.
And I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If any man is able to number the dust of the earth, he will be able to number your offspring as well.16 I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth; if anyone could count the dust of the earth, your descendants too might be counted.
Arise and walk through the land in its length, and breadth. For I will give it to you.”17 Set forth and walk about in the land, through its length and breadth, for to you I will give it."
Therefore, moving his tent, Abram went and dwelt by the steep valley of Mamre, which is in Hebron. And he built an altar there to the Lord.18 Abram moved his tents and went on to settle near the terebinth of Mamre, which is at Hebron. There he built an altar to the LORD.
