2 cogitatus victus avertit somnum, et infirmitas gravis a somno excitat. | 2 Watching care will not let a man slumber, as a sore disease breaketh sleep, |
3 Laboravit dives in congregatione substantiae et, si requiescit, replebitur deliciis suis; | 3 The rich hath great labour in gathering riches together; and when he resteth, he is filled with his delicates. |
4 laboravit pauper in penuria victus et, si requiescit, inops fit. | 4 The poor laboureth in his poor estate; and when he leaveth off, he is still needy. |
5 Qui aurum diligit, non iustificabitur, et, qui insequitur lucrum, in eo oberrabit. | 5 He that loveth gold shall not be justified, and he that followeth corruption shall have enough thereof. |
6 Multi dati sunt in ruinam auri gratia, et facta est in facie ipsorum perditio illorum. | 6 Gold hath been the ruin of many, and their destruction was present. |
7 Lignum offensionis est aurum sacrificantium; vae illis, qui sectantur illud: et omnis imprudens capietur in illo. | 7 It is a stumblingblock unto them that sacrifice unto it, and every fool shall be taken therewith. |
8 Beatus dives, qui inventus est sine macula et qui post aurum non abiit nec speravit in pecunia et thesauris. | 8 Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish, and hath not gone after gold. |
9 Quis est hic, et laudabimus eum? Fecit enim mirabilia in populo suo. | 9 Who is he? and we will call him blessed: for wonderful things hath he done among his people. |
10 Quis probatus est in illo et perfectus est? Erit illi gloria aeterna. Quis potuit transgredi et non est transgressus, facere mala et non fecit? | 10 Who hath been tried thereby, and found perfect? then let him glory. Who might offend, and hath not offended? or done evil, and hath not done it? |
11 Ideo stabilita sunt bona illius in Domino, et eleemosynas illius enarrabit omnis ecclesia sanctorum. | 11 His goods shall be established, and the congregation shall declare his alms. |
12 De continentia. Supra mensam magnam sedisti? Non aperias super illam faucem tuam prior. | 12 If thou sit at a bountiful table, be not greedy upon it, and say not, There is much meat on it. |
13 Non dicas: “Multa sunt, quae super illam sunt!”. | 13 Remember that a wicked eye is an evil thing: and what is created more wicked than an eye? therefore it weepeth upon every occasion. |
14 Memento quoniam malum est oculus nequam; oculum nequam odit Deus. | 14 Stretch not thine hand whithersoever it looketh, and thrust it not with him into the dish. |
15 Nequius oculo quid creatum est? Ideo ab omni facie lacrimatur. | 15 Judge not thy neighbour by thyself: and be discreet in every point. |
16 Quocumque aspexerit, ne extendas manum tuam prior et invidia contaminatus erubescas; | 16 Eat as it becometh a man, those things which are set before thee; and devour note, lest thou be hated. |
17 nec comprimaris cum eo in catino. | 17 Leave off first for manners' sake; and be not unsatiable, lest thou offend. |
18 Intellege, quae sunt proximi tui, ex teipso et de omni verbo cogita; | 18 When thou sittest among many, reach not thine hand out first of all. |
19 utere quasi homo frugi his, quae tibi apponuntur, ne, cum manducas multum, odio habearis. | 19 A very little is sufficient for a man well nurtured, and he fetcheth not his wind short upon his bed. |
20 Cessa prior disciplinae causa et noli nimius esse, ne forte offendas. | 20 Sound sleep cometh of moderate eating: he riseth early, and his wits are with him: but the pain of watching, and choler, and pangs of the belly, are with an unsatiable man. |
21 Et, si in medio multorum sedisti, prior illis ne extendas manum tuam nec prior poscas bibere. | 21 And if thou hast been forced to eat, arise, go forth, vomit, and thou shalt have rest. |
22 Quam sufficiens est homini erudito vinum exiguum! Et in dormiendo non laborabis ab illo et non senties dolorem. | 22 My son, hear me, and despise me not, and at the last thou shalt find as I told thee: in all thy works be quick, so shall there no sickness come unto thee. |
23 Vigilia, cholera et tortura ventris viro infrunito; | 23 Whoso is liberal of his meat, men shall speak well of him; and the report of his good housekeeping will be believed. |
24 somnus sanitatis in homine parco: dormiet usque mane, et anima illius cum ipso delectabitur. | 24 But against him that is a niggard of his meat the whole city shall murmur; and the testimonies of his niggardness shall not be doubted of. |
25 Et, si coactus fueris in edendo multum, surge e medio, evome, et refrigerabit te, et non adduces corpori tuo infirmitatem. | 25 Shew not thy valiantness in wine; for wine hath destroyed many. |
26 Audi me, fili, et ne spernas me et in novissimo invenies verba mea. | 26 The furnace proveth the edge by dipping: so doth wine the hearts of the proud by drunkeness. |
27 In omnibus operibus tuis esto modestus, et omnis infirmitas non occurret tibi. | 27 Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately: what life is then to a man that is without wine? for it was made to make men glad. |
28 Splendidum in panibus benedicent labia multorum, et testimonium bonitatis illius fidele; | 28 Wine measurably drunk and in season bringeth gladness of the heart, and cheerfulness of the mind: |
29 nequissimo in pane murmurabit civitas, et testimonium nequitiae illius verum est. | 29 But wine drunken with excess maketh bitterness of the mind, with brawling and quarrelling. |
30 In vino noli provocare; multos enim exterminavit vinum. | 30 Drunkenness increaseth the rage of a fool till he offend: it diminisheth strength, and maketh wounds. |
31 Fornax probat aciem ferri in intinctione: sic vinum in lite corda superborum. | 31 Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine, and despise him not in his mirth: give him no despiteful words, and press not upon him with urging him [to drink.] |
32 Quasi vita hominibus vinum, si bibas illud moderate. | |
33 Quae est vita ei, qui minuitur vino? | |
34 Quid defraudat vitam? Mors. | |
35 Vinum in iucunditatem creatum est et non in ebrietatem, ab initio. | |
36 Exsultatio animae et gaudium et voluptas cordis vinum moderate potatum in tempore; | |
37 sanitas est animae et corpori sobrius potus. | |
38 Vinum multum potatum irritationem et iram et ruinas multas facit. | |
39 Amaritudo animae vinum multum potatum in irritatione et ruina. | |
40 Ebrietas multiplicat animositatem imprudentis in offensionem, minorans virtutem et faciens vulnera. | |
41 In convivio vini non arguas proximum et non despicias eum in iucunditate illius; | |
42 verba improperii non dicas illi et non premas illum in repetendo. |
