1 When David had finished talking to Saul, Jonathan felt an instant affection for David; Jonathan lovedhim like his very self;	1 Tendo Davi acabado de falar com Saul, a alma de Jônatas apegou-se à alma de Davi, e Jônatas começou a amá-lo como a si mesmo.
2 Saul engaged him that very day and would not let him go home to his father.	2 Naquele mesmo dia Saul o reteve em sua casa e não o deixou voltar para a casa de seu pai.
3 Jonathan made a pact with David, since he loved him like his very self;	3 Jônatas fez um pacto com Davi, que ele amava como a si mesmo.
4 Jonathan took off the cloak which he was wearing and gave it to David, and his armour too, evenincluding his sword, his bow and his belt.	4 Tirou o seu manto, deu-o a Davi, bem como a sua armadura, sua espada, seu arco e seu cinto.
5 Wherever David was sent on a mission by Saul, he was successful, and Saul put him in command ofthe fighting men; al the people respected him and so did Saul's staff.	5 Saul incumbiu Davi de diversas missões, e todas foram muito frutuosas. Colocou-o à frente dos seus guerreiros, e ele ganhou a simpatia de todo o povo, inclusive dos servos do rei.
6 On their return, when David was coming back from kil ing the Philistine, the women came out of al thetowns of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul, with tambourines, sistrums and cries of joy;	6 Voltando o exército, depois de Davi ter matado o filisteu, de todas as cidades de Israel saíam as mulheres ao encontro do rei Saul, cantando e dançando alegremente, ao som de tamborins e címbalos.
7 and as they danced the women sang: Saul has kil ed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.	7 E enquanto dançavam, diziam umas às outras: Saul matou seus milhares, e Davi seus dez milhares.
8 Saul was very angry; the incident displeased him. 'They have given David the tens of thousands,' hesaid, 'but me only the thousands; what more can he have, except the throne?'	8 Saul irritou-se em extremo, e desagradou-lhe tal coisa. Dão dez mil a Davi, disse ele, e a mim apenas mil! Só lhe falta a coroa!
9 And Saul watched David jealously from that day onwards.	9 E a partir daquele dia, Saul olhou Davi com maus olhos.
10 The fol owing day, an evil spirit from God seized on Saul and he fell into a frenzy while he wasindoors. David played the harp as on other occasions; Saul had a spear in his hand.	10 No dia seguinte, apoderou-se dele o mau espírito de Deus, e teve um acesso de delírio em sua casa. Como nos outros dias, Davi pôs-se a tocar a cítara.
11 Saul brandished the spear; he said, 'I wil pin David to the wall!' David evaded him twice.	11 Saul, que tinha uma lança na mão, arremessou-a contra Davi, dizendo: Vou cravá-lo na parede! Mas Davi se desviou do golpe por duas vezes.
12 Saul feared David, since Yahweh was with him and had withdrawn from Saul.	12 Saul temia Davi, porque o Senhor estava com o jovem, e tinha-se retirado dele.
13 So Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him commander of a thousand; he led thepeople on campaign.	13 Afastou-o então de si, estabelecendo-o chefe de mil homens, à frente dos quais Davi empreendia as suas expedições.
14 In al his expeditions, David was successful and Yahweh was with him.	14 Saía-se bem em todas as suas empresas, porque o Senhor estava com ele.
15 And Saul, seeing how very successful he was, was afraid of him.	15 Saul, vendo-o tão engenhoso, teve medo dele.
16 Al Israel and Judah loved David, however, since he was their leader on campaign.	16 Mas todos em Israel e Judá o amavam, porque ele entrava e saía diante deles.
17 Saul said to David, 'This is my elder daughter Merab; I shal give her to you in marriage; but you mustserve me bravely and fight Yahweh's wars.' Saul thought, 'Better than strike the blow myself, let the Philistinesdo it!'	17 Saul disse a Davi: Eis minha filha mais velha, Merab, que eu te darei por mulher, contanto que sejas valoroso e combatas nas guerras do Senhor. Saul pensava: Não é bom que o fira a minha mão, mas antes a dos filisteus.
18 David replied to Saul, 'Who am I and what is my lineage -- and my father's family -- in Israel, for meto become the king's son-in-law?'	18 Davi respondeu: Quem sou eu? E o que é a minha vida ou a família de meu pai em Israel, para que me torne genro do rei?
19 When the time came for Merab daughter of Saul to be given to David, she was given to Adriel ofMeholah instead.	19 Ora, tendo chegado o tempo em que Merab, filha de Saul, devia ser dada a Davi, deram-na em casamento a Hadriel, o molatita.
20 Now Michal daughter of Saul fel in love with David. When Saul heard this he was pleased.	20 Ora, Micol, filha de Saul, amava Davi. E contaram-no a Saul, que se alegrou com isso.
21 He thought, 'Yes, I shall give her to him; she can be the snare for him, so that the Philistines wil gethim.' (On two occasions, Saul told David, 'Today, you shall be my son-in-law.')	21 Vou dar-lhe Micol, pensava Saul, para que ela lhe seja uma armadilha, e ele caia na mão dos filisteus. Saul disse, pois, a Davi pela segunda vez: Agora vais tornar-te meu genro.
22 Saul gave instructions to his servants, 'Have a private word with David and say, "Look, the king isfond of you and al his servants love you -- why not be the king's son-in-law?" '	22 E ordenou aos seus servos que dissessem em segredo a Davi: O rei afeiçoou-se a ti e todos os seus servos te amam. Torna-te genro do rei.
23 Saul's servants repeated these words in David's ear, to which David replied, 'Do you think thatbecoming the king's son-in-law is a trivial matter; I have neither wealth nor position.'	23 Os servos de Saul repetiram essas palavras aos ouvidos de Davi, mas este respondeu: Parece-vos pouca coisa ser genro do rei? Eu sou pobre e de condição humilde.
24 Saul's servants then reported back, 'This is what David said.'	24 Os servos de Saul referiram-lhe as palavras de Davi.
25 Saul replied, 'Tel David this, "The king desires no bride-price except one hundred Philistineforeskins, in vengeance on the king's enemies." ' Saul was counting on getting David killed by the Philistines.	25 Dir-lhe-eis, respondeu Saul, que o rei só pede como dote cem prepúcios de filisteus, para vingar-se dos seus inimigos. Seu desígnio era entregar Davi nas mãos dos filisteus.
26 When his servants repeated this to David, David thought it would be a fine thing to be the king's son-in-law. And no time was lost	26 Transmitiram os servos a Davi essa mensagem, o qual se agradou da proposta de tornar-se genro do rei.
27 before David got up to go, he and his men, and kil ed two hundred of the Philistines. David broughttheir foreskins back and counted them out before the king, so that he could be the king's son-in-law. Saul thengave him his daughter Michal in marriage.	27 Antes que expirasse o termo fixado, Davi partiu com seus homens; matou duzentos filisteus e trouxe os seus prepúcios, entregando-os integralmente ao rei, para se tornar seu genro. Saul deu-lhe por mulher sua filha Micol.
28 Saul could not but see that Yahweh was with David, and that the whole House of Israel loved him;	28 Ele compreendeu que o Senhor estava com Davi. Sua filha Micol o amava.
29 Saul became more afraid of David than ever, and became his inveterate enemy.	29 O rei sentiu com isso redobrar o seu medo. Durante todo o resto de sua vida ele detestou Davi.
30 The Philistine chiefs kept mounting their campaigns but, whenever they did so, David proved moresuccessful than any of Saul's staff; consequently he gained great renown.	30 Cada vez que os chefes dos filisteus faziam incursões, Davi era mais bem-sucedido que todos os homens de Saul, o que deu ao seu nome grande fama.
