1 Then again, I contemplate al the oppression that is committed under the sun. Take for instance thetears of the oppressed. No one to comfort them! The power their oppressors wield. No one to comfort them!	1 Volsimi dall' altro lato, e vidi gl' inganni (e le forze) che sono fatte sotto il sole, e le lacrime de' meno possenti, e nessuno è adiutatore; e non pare che si possa contrastare a quelle forze, però ch' io li vidi destituiti di ogni adiutorio.
2 So, rather than the living who stil have lives to live, I congratulate the dead who have already metdeath;	2 E però lodai più li morti, che li vivi; (però che nessuno scampa delle loro forze).
3 happier than both of these are those who are yet unborn and have not seen the evil things that are doneunder the sun.	3 Già più è bene avventurato di nessuno di costoro, quello che non è nato ancora; però che non vide il male che si fa sotto il sole.
4 I see that al effort and all achievement spring from mutual jealousy. This too is futility and chasing afterthe wind.	4 E anche sì mi avvidi. (dall' altro lato), come gli uomini s' affaticano, (e ciascuno s' ingegna quanto sae), e vidi che l'uno ha invidia dell' altro; e anche in questo ha grande vanitade per soperchio rigoglio.
5 The fool folds his arms and eats his own flesh away.	5 E lo stolto (sì si strugge e) stropicciasi le mani, e mangiasi le carni sue, dicendo:
6 Better one hand full of repose than two hands ful of achievements to chase after the wind.	6 egli è meglio uno pugnellino con riposo (e sanza fatica), che avere amendue piene le mani con fatica e con afflizione dell' animo.
7 And something else futile I observe under the sun:	7 Anche pensai (e volsimi dall' altro lato), e vidi un' altra vanità sotto il sole,
8 a person is quite alone -- no child, no brother; and yet there is no end to his efforts, his eyes can neverhave their fil of riches. For whom, then, do I work so hard and grudge myself pleasure? This too is futile, a sorry business.	8 cioè che sarà l'uomo solo, sanza figliuolo e sanza fratelli, e si non si riposa mai, (e tutto il dì fulmina per guadagnare), e gli occhi suoi non si saziano di ricchezze; e non pensa mai, dicendo: doh, per che faccio io questo, e a cui raduno, e inganno l'anima mia con questi beni miei? e però sì è questo grande vanitade e affliggimento pessimo (e pericoloso).
9 Better two than one alone, since thus their work is real y rewarding.	9 Meglio è ad essere duo insieme, che uno; però che hanno utilitade (insieme) in compagnia.
10 If one should fal , the other helps him up; but what of the person with no one to help him up when hefal s?	10 Onde quando l'uomo si sconsola, il compagno si lo sostiene; e guai a chi è solo! imperò che s' elli cade, non ha chi l'aiuti rizzare.
11 Again: if two sleep together they keep warm, but how can anyone keep warm alone?	11 E se i due dormiranno insieme, (si nutricherae l'uno l'altro, e) riscalderannosi insieme; or come si puote riscaldare (e confortare) uno solo?
12 Where one alone would be overcome, two wil put up resistance; and a threefold cord is not quicklybroken.	12 Ma se averà compagnia, se alcuno gli verrà adosso, aiuterannosi insieme, e vinceranno colui; onde la fune di tre fila malagevolmente si rompe.
13 Better a youngster poor and wise than a monarch old and sil y who wil no longer take advice-	13 Meglio è l'uomo povero e giovane e savio, che none il re vecchio e pazzo, il quale non sa provedersi dinanzi.
14 even though stepping from prison to the throne, even though born a beggar in that kingdom.	14 Come alcuna volta avviene che l' uomo nato da legittimo reame, e poi che è re, consumasi (e distruggesi); e colui che era in prigione (in catene di povertade, per suo sapere) diventa poi re.
15 I observe that al who live and move under the sun support the young newcomer who takes over.	15 Io vidi molta gente sotto il sole andare con quello secondo, cioè col povero savio e giovane, il quale entroe nel reame dell' altro.
16 He takes his place at the head of innumerable subjects; but his successors wil not think the morekindly of him for that. This too is futile and chasing after the wind.	16 E sanza numero furono coloro del popolo, li quali furono sotto il vecchio inanzi lui; ma chi verrà di poi a stare col giovane, non si rallegrerà del primo. Anche questo sì è vanitade e affliggimento d'animo.
17 Watch your step when you go to the House of God: drawing near to listen is better than the offering ofa sacrifice by fools, though they do not know that they are doing wrong.	17 Quando tu entri in chiesa, non vi andare frettamente, ma pònti mente a' piedi, e appròssimati d'udire (la parola di Dio e ubbidiscila); però che meglio è ubbidire, che none sacrificio delli stolti, i quali non sanno quello che facciono di male.
