2 Maccabees 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA VOLGARE
1 Judas, otherwise known as Maccabaeus, and his companions made their way secretly among thevil ages, ral ying their fellow-countrymen; they recruited those who remained loyal to Judaism and assembledabout six thousand.	1 Giuda Maccabeo veramente, e quegli che con lui erano, nascosamente entravano nelle castella; convocando gli parenti e amici, e coloro ch' erano rimasi fermi nella legge (e fede) giudaica, congregandogli, li trassono a sè, e furono sei milia uomini (forti).
2 They cal ed on the Lord to have regard for the people oppressed on al sides, to take pity on theTemple profaned by the godless,	2 E invocavano il Signore, pregandolo che riguardasse il suo popolo il quale veniva conculcato dagli uomini, e ch' egli avesse misericordia al templo (suo santo), contaminato (e violato) dalli malvagi.
3 to have mercy on the city now being destroyed and level ed to the ground, to hear the blood of thevictims that cried aloud to him,	3 Avesse anche misericordia del grande esterminio della città, la qual sùbito era per esser spianata (e ruinata), e udisse (anche) la voce del sangue (cioè degli uccisi) i quali gridavano a lui;
4 to remember too the criminal slaughter of innocent babies and to avenge the blasphemies perpetratedagainst his name.	4 esorandolo etiam ch' egli si ricordasse della iniquissima morte degl' innocenti piccolini, e delle blasfemie fatte al suo (glorioso) nome, e che sopra tutte queste cose lo eccitasse il suo furore.
5 As soon as Maccabaeus had an organised force, he at once proved invincible to the foreigners, theLord's anger having turned into compassion.	5 Ma il Maccabeo, per la moltitudine ch' egli avea congregata, era fatto spaventoso e orribile alle genti; per che la ira del Signore era mutata in misericordia.
6 Making surprise attacks on towns and villages, he fired them; he captured favourable positions andinflicted very heavy losses on the enemy,	6 E sopravenendo lui alli castelli e cittadi, infiammava li animi loro; e occupando li luoghi opportuni, faceva grande isconfitta nelli inimici.
7 general y availing himself of the cover of night for such enterprises. The fame of his valour spread farand wide.	7 Specialmente faceva questi discorsi la notte; e la grande fama del suo potere e virtute per tutto era divulgata.
8 When Philip saw Judas was making steady progress and winning more and more frequent successes,he wrote to Ptolemy, the general officer commanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, asking for reinforcements inthe royal interest.	8 La qual cosa vedendo Filippo, e (che) a poco a poco l'uomo (cioè Giuda) far profitto, e con prestezza le sue cose andare prospere, scrisse a Tolomeo duca di Celesiria e Fenicia, che dèsse sussidio alle faccende del re.
9 Ptolemy chose Nicanor son of Patroclus, one of the king's First Friends, and sent him without delay atthe head of an international force of at least twenty thousand men to exterminate the entire Jewish race. As hisassociate he appointed Gorgias, a professional general of wide military experience.	9 Il qual Tolomeo velocemente mandò Nicanore, figliuolo di Patroclo, il quale era de' principali ed era amico, dandoli gente mescolata a piedi e a cavallo, ben armati (e mal armati), non meno di venti milia, acciò che ispegnesse tutta la generazione giudea, aggiuntoli Gorgia cavaliere, uomo nelli fatti dell' arme e di battaglie molto esperto (e ammaestrato).
10 Nicanor for his part proposed, by the sale of Jewish prisoners of war, to raise the two thousand talentsof tribute money owed by the king to the Romans.	10 E Nicanore ordinò al re, che supplisse il tributo ai Romani, il quale era (solo) di duo migliaia di talenti, della presa de' Giudei.
11 He lost no time in sending the seaboard towns an invitation to come and buy Jewish manpower,promising delivery of ninety head for one talent; but he did not reckon on the judgement from the Almighty thatwas soon to overtake him.	11 E sùbito mandò alle città marittime, convocando acciò che venissono a comprarsi de' Giudei per servi, promettendo egli di darli nonanta Giudei per uno talento, non avendo rispetto alla vendetta la qual lui dovea conseguitare dallo onnipotente Iddio.
12 When news reached Judas of Nicanor's advance, he warned his men of the enemy's approach,	12 E Giuda, dove si trovò, manifestò a quelli ch' erano con lui lo avvenimento di Nicanore.
13 whereupon the cowardly ones and those who lacked confidence in the justice of God took to theirheels and ran away.	13 Dei quali alcuni dubitando, e non credendo alla giustizia di Dio, si fuggirono.
14 The rest sold al their remaining possessions, at the same time praying the Lord to deliver them fromthe godless Nicanor, who had sold them even in advance of any encounter-	14 E gli altri, che rimasero di quelli, sì venivano pregando Iddio insieme, che li liberasse dall'empio Nicanore, il qual gli avea venduti prima che li fosse venuto appresso.
15 if not for their own sakes, then at least out of consideration for the covenants made with theirancestors, and because they themselves bore his sacred and majestic name.	15 E se non per cagione di loro li volesse liberare, che Iddio lo facesse per amor del suo testamento lo qual fu dato alli padri loro, e per la invocazione del suo santo e magnifico nome sopra di loro.
16 Maccabaeus marshal ed his men, who numbered about six thousand, and exhorted them not to bedismayed at the enemy or discouraged at the vast horde of gentiles wickedly advancing against them, but tofight bravely,	16 E (chiamati e) radunati ch' ebbe il Maccabeo insieme sette milia uomini i quali erano con lui, pregava che non si riconciliassero cogl' inimici, che nè anco temessero la (iniqua) moltitudine degli inimici, che venìa contro a loro, ma che combattesseno fortemente,
17 keeping before their eyes the outrage committed by them against the holy place and the infamous andscornful treatment inflicted on the city, not to mention the destruction of their traditional way of life.	17 avendo dinanzi alli occhi suoi la ingiuria la qual era stata fatta dalli nimici ingiustamente al luogo santo, e anco la ingiuria della città (che presono) posta in tanta derisione, e anco la distruzione delle leggi degli antichi (nostri).
18 'They may put their trust in their weapons and their exploits,' he said, 'but our confidence is in almightyGod, who is able with a single nod to overthrow both those marching on us and the whole world with them.'	18 Però che loro certamente si confidano nell'arme insieme con l'audacia loro; ma noi sì confidiamo nello onnipotente Iddio, il qual puote disfare e quelli che vengono contro a noi, e tutto il mondo, in uno cenno (e ad una sua deliberazione).
19 He reminded them of the occasions on which their ancestors had received help: that time when, underSennacherib, a hundred and eighty-five thousand men had perished;	19 E ridusseli a memoria delli adiutorii di Dio, li quali furono fatti alli suoi antecessori, e quello che fu fatto sotto Sennacherib, che cento e ottantacinque milia ne perirono;
20 that time in Babylonia when in the battle with the Galatians the Jewish combatants numbered onlyeight thousand, with four thousand Macedonians, yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eightthousand had destroyed a hundred and twenty thousand, thanks to the help they had received from Heaven, andhad taken great booty as a result.	20 e della battaglia la qual ebbero con quelli di Galata in Babilonia, dove tutti, quando vennero al fatto, dubitando quelli di Macedonia loro compagni, essi soli sei milia uomini ne uccisero cento venti milia, per le adiutorio loro dato del cielo, e per questo hanno conseguitato molti beneficii.
21 Having so roused their courage by these words that they were ready to die for the laws and theircountry, he then divided his army into four,	21 Per queste parole rimasero tutti costanti, e preparati di morire per difensione delle leggi e della patria.
22 putting his brothers, Simon, Joseph and Jonathan in command of one division each, and assigningthem fifteen hundred men apiece.	22 Fatto questo, ordinò li suoi fratelli principi a ciascun ordine, Simone, Iosefo e Ionata, dando a ciascuno per condutta mille e cinquecento uomini.
23 Next, he ordered Esdrias to read the Holy Book aloud and gave them their watchword 'Help fromGod'. Then, putting himself at the head of the first division, he attacked Nicanor.	23 Anco letto il libro santo da Esdra, e dato il segno dello adiutorio di Dio, nella prima schiera esso Giuda fu alle mani con Nicanore.
24 With the Almighty for their ally they slaughtered over nine thousand of the enemy, wounded andcrippled the greater part of Nicanor's army and put them al to flight.	24 E fatto lo adiutorio di Dio onnipotente, uccisero sopra nove milia uomini; e fatta debile la maggiore parte dello esèrcito di Nicanore per le ferite ch' ebbero, furono costretti di fuggire.
25 The money of their prospective purchasers fell into their hands. After pursuing them for a good while,they turned back, since time was pressing:	25 Pigliarono anco le pecunie di coloro che erano venuti per comperare li Giudei per ischiavi, e perseguitorono loro per ogni parte.
26 it was the eve of the Sabbath, and for that reason they did not prolong their pursuit.	26 Ma loro fuggiti si tornarono colle bocche chiuse; e questo fatto fu dinanzi il sabbato; per la qual cagione non perseverorono di perseguitarli.
27 They col ected the enemy's weapons and stripped them of their spoils, and because of the Sabbatheven more heartily blessed and praised the Lord, who had saved them and who had chosen that day for the firstmanifestation of his compassion.	27 Congregorono dopo questo tutte le loro arme e tutta la loro roba, e celebrorono il sabbato, benedicendo Iddio il quale li liberò in questo dì, dando a loro il principio della sua misericordia.
28 When the Sabbath was over, they distributed some of the booty among the victims of the persecutionand the widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.	28 Dopo il sabbato divisero parte delle robe prese agli infermi, orfani e vedove; e il resto divisero fra loro.
29 They then joined in public supplication, imploring the merciful Lord to be ful y reconciled with hisservants.	29 Terminate adunque queste cose (per questo modo), e insieme da tutti universalmente fatta la invocazione della misericordia, dimandorono al Signore, che nella fine si reconciliasse con li servi suoi.
30 They also chal enged the forces of Timotheus and Bacchides and destroyed over twenty thousand ofthem, gaining possession of several high fortresses. They divided their enormous booty into two equal shares,one for themselves, the other for the victims of the persecution and the orphans and widows, not forgetting theaged.	30 E anco di quelli i quali erano con Timoteo e Bacchide, che combatteano contra di loro, ne uccisero sopra venti milia; ed ebbero una grande munizione; e molta roba della preda divisero egualmente agli infermi, pupilli e vedove, e dando anco alli antichi.
31 They carefully col ected the enemy's weapons and stored them in suitable places. The rest of thespoils they took to Jerusalem.	31 E dopo ch' ebbero con diligenza radunate tutte l'arme, le posero nelli luoghi dove era bisogno; lo residuo della preda portarono in Ierusalem.
32 They kil ed the tribal chieftain on Timotheus' staff, an extremely wicked man who had done great harmto the Jews.	32 E Filarco uomo scelesto, che avea afflitto in molte cose i Giudei, il qual era con Timoteo, uccisero.
33 In the course of their victory celebrations in Jerusalem, they burned the men who had fired the HolyGates; with Cal isthenes they had taken refuge in one smal house; so these received a fitting reward for theirsacrilege.	33 E conciosia cosa che si celebrasse il dì della vittoria in Ierusalem, colui che avea abbruciate le porte sacre, cioè Callistene, essendo lui fuggito in una casa piccola, lo abbruciorono, rendendogli la condegna mercede per le sue empietadi.
34 The triple-dyed scoundrel Nicanor, who had brought the thousand merchants to buy the Jews,	34 Ma Nicanore, uomo operator di molti mali, il quale avea condotto mille mercatanti per comperar i Giudei,
35 finding himself with the Lord's help humbled by men he had himself reckoned as of very little account,stripped off his robes of state, and made his way across country unaccompanied, like a runaway slave, reachingAntioch by a singular stroke of fortune, since his army had been destroyed.	35 fu molto umiliato da coloro i quali lui esistimava per nulla, mediante lo adiutorio del Signore; e deposta la vestimenta della gloria sua, fuggendo per lo mezzo delle terre, solo se ne venne in Antiochia, avendo conseguitato una grande infelicità per la distruzione del suo esèrcito.
36 Thus the man who had promised the Romans to make good their tribute money by sel ing theprisoners from Jerusalem, bore witness that the Jews had a defender and that they were in consequenceinvulnerable, since they fol owed the laws which that defender had ordained.	36 E lui il quale avea promesso di restituire il tributo alli Romani della presa di quelli di Ierusalem, ora predicava che li Giudei aveano Iddio per suo protettore; e per quello sono inespugnabili, (e non è persona nè esèrcito che li possi vincere), però che sèguitano le leggi (ordinate e) constituite da esso Iddio.
