2 Maccabees 6

1 Shortly afterwards, the king sent Gerontes the Athenian to force the Jews to violate their ancestralcustoms and live no longer by the laws of God;	1 Ma non dopo molto tempo mandò il re uno uomo antico di Antiochia, il quale constrignesse i Giudei, che si rimovessono dalle leggi di Dio e della patria;
2 and to profane the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus, and the one on MountGerizim to Zeus, Patron of Strangers, as the inhabitants of the latter place had requested.	2 e che contaminasse anco il tempio il quale era in Ierusalem, e farlo chiamare tempio di Giove Olimpio; e [in] Garizim, secondo ch' erano quelli i quali abitavano nel luogo, di Giove ospitale.
3 The advent of these evils was painful y hard for al the people to bear.	3 Ed era uno pessimo e grave contracorso di mali a tutti.
4 The Temple was fil ed with revel ing and debauchery by the gentiles, who took their pleasure withprostitutes and had intercourse with women in the sacred precincts, introducing other indecencies besides.	4 Però che anco il tempio era pieno di lussuria, e di conviti e mangiari disordinati, e di persone che usavano con meretrici; e le femine s' intromettevano dei vasi sacri più di quello era conveniente, mettendovi dentro cose che non erano lecite.
5 The altar of sacrifice was loaded with victims proscribed by the law as profane.	5 Anco l'altare era pieno di molte cose illecite, le quali erano proibite per la legge.
6 No one might either keep the Sabbath or observe the traditional feasts, or so much as admit to being aJew.	6 E non si servava li sabbati, nè li dì solenni (delli padri, ovver) della patria erano servati; e non era alcuno, che confessasse che fusse Giudeo.
7 People were driven by harsh compulsion to take part in the monthly ritual meal commemorating theking's birthday; and when a feast of Dionysus occurred, they were forced to wear ivy wreaths and walk in theDionysiac procession.	7 Ed erano menati, con amara necessità, nel dì della natività del re alli sacrificii; e celebrandosi le cose sacre di (dio) Bacco (lo quale è iddio del vino), erano costretti di circuire il tempio di (dio) Bacco, coronati di ellera.
8 A decree was issued at the instance of the people of Ptolemais for the neighbouring Greek cities,enforcing the same conduct on the Jews there, obliging them to share in the sacrificial meals,	8 E oltre questo fu fatto uno comandamento nelle prossime città de' Gentili, incitando i Tolomei, che anco per questo medesimo modo facessino contro alli Giudei, [acciò] che sacrificassino;
9 and ordering the execution of those who would not voluntarily conform to Greek customs. So it becameclear that disaster was imminent.	9 e quelli che non vogliano transferirsi agl' instituti de' Gentili, uccidessono; ed era una miseria veder queste cose.
10 For example, two women were charged with having circumcised their children. They were paradedpublicly round the town, with their babies hung at their breasts, and then hurled over the city wal .	10 E furono accusate due donne, che aveano circonciso i suoi figliuoli; le quali, avendo i figliuoli appiccati alle poppe, essendo menate pubblicamente per la città, le precipitarono per le mura.
11 Other people, who had assembled in some near-by caves to keep the seventh day without attractingattention, were denounced to Philip, and were then al burnt to death together, since their consciences would notal ow them to defend themselves, out of respect for the holiness of the day.	11 Alcuni altri nascosamente nelle spelonche celebravano il sabbato; ed essendo manifestati a Filippo, furono arsi, però che aveano riverenza, per la religione e l'osservanza, di farsi alcuno adiutorio pur con le mani.
12 Now, I urge anyone who may read this book not to be dismayed at these calamities, but to reflect thatsuch visitations are intended not to destroy our race but to discipline it.	12 Io veramente priego voi li quali leggerete questo libro, che non vi maravigliate per queste cose avverse, ma reputate (che) queste cose che avvennero, non esser a distruzione della nostra gente, ma a correzione.
13 Indeed, when evil-doers are not left for long to their own devices but incur swift retribution, it is a signof great benevolence.	13 Però che non permettere che i peccatori molto tempo òperino male, ma sùbito castigarli, indicio di uno grande beneficio.
14 In the case of other nations, the Master waits patiently for them to attain the ful measure of their sinsbefore he punishes them, but with us he has decided to deal differently,	14 Non certo così, come nelle altre nazioni, il Signore aspetta pazientemente, acciò che quando verrà il dì del giudicio li punisca nella moltitudine de' loro peccati.
15 rather than have to punish us later, when our sins come to ful measure.	15 E così anco in noi ordinò, ch' essendo divenuti i nostri peccati nella fine, così anco dopo soprainduca la vendetta.
16 And so he never entirely withdraws his mercy from us; he may discipline us by some disaster, but hedoes not desert his own people.	16 Per la qual cosa (certamente) già mai non rimove la sua misericordia da noi; però che correggendo nelle avversità, il suo popolo non abbandona.
17 Let this be said simply by way of reminder; we must return to our story without more ado.	17 E queste poche cose, che noi abbiamo qui interposte, sia ammaestramento di quelli che leggeranno. E ora è tempo di venire alla narrazione.
18 Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most nobleappearance, had his mouth forced open, to make him eat a piece of pork.	18 Eleazaro adunque, uno delli maggiori scribi, uomo di età provetta e bello di volto, con la bocca aperta gemendo, era isforzato che mangiasse la carne del porco.
19 But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, walked of his own accord to thetorture of the wheel,	19 E lui desiderando più tosto la gloriosa morte, che la vita odiosa, volontariamente andava inanzi al supplicio.
20 having spat the stuff out, as befits those with the courage to reject what is not lawful to taste, ratherthan live.	20 E considerando lui a che modo si debba vivendo operare, sostenendo pazientemente, deliberò di non consentire ad alcuna cosa illecita per amore della vita.
21 The people supervising the ritual meal, forbidden by the Law, because of the length of time for whichthey had known him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properlyuse, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king;	21 Ma coloro i quali erano circostanti, commossi da una iniqua miserazione per cagione della antica amicizia che loro aveano con lui, traendolo da canto lo pregavano secretamente che fussero condutte carni le quali fosse lecito a lui di mangiarle, acciò che simulasse di aver mangiato, sì come il re avea comandato, delle carni del sacrificio,
22 this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted bytheir long friendship.	22 acciò che, finto questo, fusse liberato dalla morte; e (anco) per amore dell' antica sua amicizia. facevano con lui questa umanità.
23 But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the wel -earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above al of theholy legislation established by God himself, he answered accordingly, telling them to send him at once to Hades.	23 Ma lui cominciò a pensare la degna e prestante sua antichità, e la canizie della sua strenua nobilità, ed esser stato da fanciullo in su di ottima conversazione, e sempre esser vivuto secondo la osservanza della legge instituita da Dio; rispose sùbito dicendo voler anteponer più tosto esser nell' inferno.
24 'Pretence', he said, 'does not befit our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar atthe age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners' way of life	24 Non (era e non) è degno alla condizion nostra, disse lui, di fingere; come molti giovani, pensando Eleazaro di nonanta anni doversi transferire alla vita della gente (forestiera e) aliena,
25 and, because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spel of life, might themselves be ledastray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age.	25 e loro per cagione della mia simulazione, e amore di un poco di vita corruttibile, siano ingannati; e per questo acquisti alla mia vecchiezza macula, e cosa aliena dalle cose sacre.
26 Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp ofthe Almighty.	26 Però che se [bene] nel tempo presente io sia liberato dalli supplicii umani, niente di meno nè vivo nè morto potrò fuggire la mano dello Onnipotente Iddio.
27 Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now, I shal prove myself worthy of my old age,	27 Per la qual cagione fortemente superando questa vita, apparirò degno di antichitade.
28 and I shal have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly andgenerously, for the venerable and holy laws.' So saying, he walked straight to the wheel,	28 E alli giovani lascerò (buono e) forte esempio, se con l'animo pronto e costante per osservazione delle nostre santissime e verissime leggi passerò da questa vita con una onesta morte. E dette queste cose, sùbito era menato al supplicio.
29 while those who were escorting him, recently so wel disposed towards him, turned against him afterthis declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness.	29 E quelli che il menavano, e poco inanzi dimostrarono qualche misericordia (volendolo liberare), si voltorono in ira (contro a lui) per le parole che lui avea dette, le quali loro pensavano che per arroganza le avesse dette.
30 He for his part, just before he died under the blows, gave a sigh and said, 'The Lord whose knowledgeis holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, from awe of him I gladly endure these agonies ofbody under the lash, and that in my soul I am glad to suffer.'	30 E conciosia cosa che con gravi piaghe lo percotessero (per ucciderlo), cominciò a lacrimare e disse: Signore, il quale conosci per manifesta scienza, tu sai che possendo esser liberato dalla morte, io sostengo durissimi dolori corporali; ma secondo l' anima, per lo tuo timore, volontieri sostengo queste cose.
31 This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only forthe young but for the greater part of the nation.	31 Ed Eleazaro a questo modo si morì, lasciando memoria della morte sua ad esempio di virtù e di fortezza, non solo alli giovani, ma anco a tutta la gente.
