2 Maccabees 15

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Nicanor heard that Judas and his men were in the neighbourhood of Samaria, so he decided to attackthem, at no risk to himself, on the day of rest.	1 Nicanor apprit que Judas et ses hommes étaient du côté de la Samarie et il décida de les attaquer sans risque le jour du sabbat.
2 Those Jews who had been compel ed to follow him, said, 'Do not massacre them in such a savage,barbarous way. Respect the day on which the All-seeing has conferred a special holiness.'	2 Les Juifs qui étaient obligés de le suivre lui dirent: “Ne les fais pas mourir d’une manière si sauvage et si barbare. Respecte ce jour puisque Celui qui voit tout l’a voulu supérieur à tous les autres: il en a fait un jour saint.”
3 At this the triple-dyed scoundrel asked if there were in heaven a sovereign who had ordered thekeeping of the Sabbath day.	3 Alors ce triple criminel demanda s’il y avait bien au ciel un souverain qui ait ordonné de célébrer le jour du sabbat.
4 When they answered, 'The living Lord himself, the Heavenly Sovereign, has ordered the observanceof the seventh day,'	4 Les Juifs répondirent: “C’est le Seigneur vivant, le Souverain du ciel, qui a ordonné de célébrer le septième jour.”
5 he retorted, 'And I, as sovereign on earth, order you to take up arms and do the king's business.' Foral that, he did not manage to carry out his wicked plan.	5 Mais l’autre déclara: “Eh bien, moi qui suis souverain sur la terre, j’ordonne de prendre les armes et d’obéir à la volonté du roi.” Cependant il ne put réaliser son projet sanguinaire.
6 While Nicanor, in his unlimited boastfulness and pride, was planning to erect a general trophy with thespoils taken from Judas and his men,	6 Avec beaucoup de suffisance et de prétention, Nicanor avait décidé de faire une exposition des dépouilles de Judas et de ses hommes.
7 Maccabaeus remained firm in his confident conviction that the Lord would stand by him.	7 Maccabée n’en était pas moins confiant, il comptait fermement sur l’aide du Seigneur.
8 He urged his men not to be dismayed by the foreigners' attacks but, keeping in mind the help that hadcome to them from Heaven in the past, to be confident that this time too victory would be theirs with the help ofthe Almighty.	8 Il encouragea donc ses hommes à ne pas redouter l’approche des païens; il les invita à se rappeler les secours qui leur étaient venus du ciel dans le passé: ils devaient être sûrs que le Tout-Puissant leur donnerait aujourd’hui la victoire.
9 He put fresh heart into them by citing the Law and the Prophets and, by stirring up memories of thebattles they had already won, he fil ed them with new enthusiasm.	9 Il leur redit les paroles de la Loi et des prophètes et ranima leur enthousiasme en leur remettant en mémoire les nombreux combats où ils avaient triomphé.
10 Having thus aroused their courage, he ended his exhortation by demonstrating the treachery of theforeigners and how they had violated their oaths.	10 Après avoir ainsi réveillé leur ardeur, il confirma ses paroles en faisant voir à ses hommes la déloyauté des païens et comment ils avaient violé leur serment.
11 Having armed each one of them not so much with the safety given by shield and lance as with thatconfidence which springs from noble language, he encouraged them al by describing to them a convincingdream -- a vision, as it were.	11 Judas les laissa ainsi bien équipés: ce n’était pas la sécurité que donnent les boucliers et les lances, mais le réconfort qu’apportent de bonnes paroles. Pour terminer, il leur raconta un songe digne de foi, une sorte de vision qui les remplit de joie.
12 What he had seen was this: Onias, the former high priest, that paragon of men, modest of bearingand gentle of manners, suitably eloquent and trained from boyhood in the practice of every virtue -- Onias wasstretching out his hands and praying for the whole Jewish community.	12 Voici ce qu’il avait vu: Le grand prêtre Onias, qui avait été un homme droit, humble et doux dans son comportement, distingué dans le langage et appliqué depuis l’enfance à pratiquer la vertu, cet Onias donc, priait les mains levées vers le ciel pour tout le peuple juif.
13 Next, there appeared a man equal y remarkable for his great age and dignity and invested with amarvel ous and impressive air of majesty.	13 Ensuite était apparu dans la même attitude un homme qui se distinguait par ses cheveux blancs et sa dignité, revêtu d’une étonnante et prodigieuse majesté.
14 Onias began to speak: 'This is a man', he said, 'who loves his brothers and prays much for thepeople and the holy city-Jeremiah, the prophet of God.'	14 Onias prit alors la parole et dit: “Cet homme préoccupé pour ses frères, c’est Jérémie, le prophète de Dieu; il prie beaucoup pour le peuple et pour la Ville Sainte.”
15 Jeremiah then stretched out his right hand and presented Judas with a golden sword, saying as hegave it,	15 Alors Jérémie avait étendu la main droite; il avait remis à Judas une épée d’or et, en la lui donnant, il avait prononcé ces paroles:
16 'Take this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you wil shatter the enemy.'	16 “Prends cette épée sainte, c’est un don de Dieu! Avec elle, tu tailleras en pièces les ennemis.”
17 Encouraged by the noble words of Judas, which had the power to inspire valour and give the youngthe spirit of mature men, they decided not to entrench themselves in a camp, but bravely to take the offensiveand, in hand-to-hand fighting, to commit the result to the fortune of war, since the city, their holy religion and theTemple were in danger.	17 Réconfortés par ces paroles de Judas, si belles et capables d’exciter le courage, de donner aux jeunes une âme virile, ils décidèrent de ne pas dresser de camp mais de prendre vaillamment l’offensive. Ils voulaient emporter la décision en se jetant dans la bataille avec tout leur courage, car la ville, le Lieu Saint et le Temple, étaient en danger.
18 Their concern for their wives and children, their brothers and relatives, had shrunk to minuteimportance; their chief and greatest fear was for the consecrated Temple.	18 Leur inquiétude pour leurs femmes et leurs enfants, pour leurs frères et leurs parents, passait au second rang; la plus grande et la première de leurs craintes était pour le Sanctuaire sacré.
19 Those left behind in the city felt a similar anxiety, alarmed as they were about the forthcomingencounter in the open country.	19 Quant à ceux qu’on avait laissés dans la ville, leur anxiété n’était pas moindre, ils redoutaient le sort de cette attaque en rase campagne.
20 Everyone now awaited the coming issue. The enemy had already concentrated their forces andstood formed up in order of battle, with the elephants drawn up in a strategic position and the cavalry disposedon the wings.	20 Tous attendaient la décision prochaine. Les ennemis s’étaient rassemblés et rangés en ordre de bataille; on avait disposé les éléphants au point le plus favorable et la cavalerie était sur les côtés.
21 Maccabaeus took note of these masses confronting him, the glittering array of armour and the fierceaspect of the elephants; then, raising his hands to heaven, he called on the Lord who works miracles, in theknowledge that it is not by force of arms but as he sees fit to decide, that victory is granted by him to such asdeserve it.	21 Maccabée vit devant lui ces multitudes, la variété des armes, l’aspect farouche des éléphants. Alors il étendit les mains vers le Ciel et il invoqua le Seigneur qui accomplit des prodiges: il savait bien que ce ne sont pas les armes, mais sa volonté qui procure la victoire à ceux qui en sont dignes.
22 His prayer was worded thus: 'You, Master, sent your angel in the days of Hezekiah king of Judaea,and he destroyed no less than one hundred and eighty-five thousand of Sennacherib's army;	22 Il prononça cette prière: “Toi, Souverain, tu as envoyé ton ange au temps d’Ézékias roi de Judée: il a fait périr plus de 185 000 hommes dans l’armée de Sennakérib.
23 now, once again, Sovereign of heaven, send a good angel before us to spread terror and dismay.	23 Aujourd’hui encore, Souverain des Cieux, envoie ton bon ange devant nous pour semer la panique et la terreur.
24 May these men be struck down by the might of your arm, since they have come with blasphemy ontheir lips to attack your holy people.' And on these words he finished.	24 Que tes coups puissants frappent d’épouvante ceux qui attaquent ton peuple saint en criant leurs blasphèmes!” C’est ainsi qu’il acheva sa prière.
25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and war songs,	25 Les gens de Nicanor s’avancèrent au son des trompettes et des cors;
26 but the men of Judas closed with the enemy uttering invocations and prayers.	26 Judas et ses hommes, de leur côté, engagèrent le combat avec des invocations et des prières.
27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God in their hearts, they cut down at least thirty-fivethousand men and were greatly cheered by this manifestation of God.	27 De leurs mains ils combattaient, et de tout cœur ils priaient Dieu; enthousiasmés par la manifestation de Dieu, ils n’abattirent pas moins de 35 000 hommes.
28 When the engagement was over and they were withdrawing in triumph, they recognised Nicanor,lying dead in ful armour.	28 La bataille terminée, alors qu’ils revenaient tout joyeux, ils reconnurent Nicanor, tombé dans son armure.
29 With shouting and confusion all around, they blessed the sovereign Master in their ancestral tongue.	29 Au milieu des cris et de la confusion générale, ils bénirent le Souverain dans la langue de leurs pères.
30 He who, as protagonist, had devoted himself, body and soul, to his fel ow-citizens, and hadpreserved the love he felt even in youth for those of his own race, gave orders for Nicanor's head to be cut off,with his arm up to the shoulder, and taken to Jerusalem.	30 Alors, celui qui avait combattu au premier rang pour ses concitoyens, de tout son cœur et de toutes ses forces, celui qui avait gardé pour sa nation les bons sentiments de sa jeunesse, ordonna de trancher la tête de Nicanor et son bras jusqu’à l’épaule, et de les emporter à Jérusalem.
31 When he arrived there himself, he cal ed his countrymen together, stationed the priests in front of thealtar and then sent for the people from the Citadel.	31 Arrivé là, il rassembla tout le peuple, il plaça les prêtres devant l’autel et envoya chercher les hommes de la Citadelle.
32 He showed them the head of the abominable Nicanor, and the hand which this infamous man hadstretched out so insolently against the holy House of the Almighty.	32 Il leur montra la tête de l’infâme Nicanor et la main que ce blasphémateur avait levée dans son orgueil contre le saint Temple du Tout-Puissant.
33 Then, cutting out godless Nicanor's tongue, he gave orders for it to be fed piecemeal to the birds,and for the salary of his folly to be hung up in front of the Temple.	33 Puis, après avoir tranché la langue de l’impie Nicanor, il donna ordre de la donner par petits morceaux aux oiseaux et de suspendre en face du Temple le bras qu’il avait tendu dans un geste insensé.
34 At this, everyone sent blessings heavenwards to the glorious Lord, saying, 'Blessed be he who haspreserved his holy place from pol ution!'	34 Tous firent monter vers le Ciel une louange au Seigneur qui s’était manifesté: “Béni soit, disaient-ils, Celui qui a conservé son Lieu sans souillure.”
35 He hung Nicanor's head from the Citadel, a clear and evident sign to al of the help of the Lord.	35 Judas fit accrocher à la Citadelle la tête de Nicanor comme une preuve évidente pour tous de l’aide du Seigneur.
36 They al decreed by public vote never to let that day go by unobserved, but to celebrate thethirteenth day of the twelfth month, cal ed Adar in Aramaic, the eve of what is called the Day of Mordecai.	36 Tous décidèrent par un vote public de ne plus laisser passer ce jour sans le commémorer: on célébrerait le treizième jour du douzième mois, qu’on appelle en araméen le mois d’Adar, la veille du jour appelé jour de Mardochée.
37 So ends the episode of Nicanor, and as, since then, the city has remained in the possession of theHebrews, I shal bring my own work to an end here too.	37 Voilà comment se déroulèrent les événements concernant Nicanor. Comme depuis ce temps la ville est demeurée entre les mains des Hébreux, moi aussi j’arrêterai là mon récit.
38 If it is wel composed and to the point, that is just what I wanted. If it is worthless and mediocre, thatis al I could manage.	38 S’il est bon et réussi, c’est ce que je voulais. S’il est quelconque et médiocre, c’est tout ce que j’ai pu faire.
39 Just as it is injurious to drink wine by itself, or again water alone, whereas wine mixed with water ispleasant and produces a delightful sense of wel -being, so skil in presenting the incidents is what delights theunderstanding of those who read the book. And here I close.	39 De même qu’il n’est pas bon de boire du vin seul, ou seulement de l’eau, alors que le vin coupé d’eau est agréable et procure beaucoup de plaisir, de même la belle ordonnance du récit charme les oreilles de ceux qui lisent l’ouvrage. Ici sera la fin.
