1 John then went up from Gezer and reported to his father Simon what Cendebaeus was busy doing.	1 Allora si partì Giovanni di Gazara, e disse a Simone suo padre ciò che Cendebeo aveva fatto nel popolo loro.
2 At this, Simon summoned his two elder sons, Judas and John, and said to them, 'My brothers and I,and my father's House, have fought the enemies of Israel from our youth until today, and many a time we havebeen successful in rescuing Israel.	2 E allora chiamò a sè Simone due suoi figliuoli più attempati, cioè Giuda e Giovanni, e disse loro: io (sono attempato, sì che tu Giuda e tu Giovanni voglio che sappiate, che io) e gli miei fratelli, e quegli della casa del mio padre, abbiamo combattuto contro gli nimici del popolo d'Israel, dalla nostra gioventudine infino al dì d'oggi; e conceduto fu nelle nostre mani di liberare il nostro popolo (de' suoi nimici) alquante volte.
3 But now I am an old man, while you, by the mercy of Heaven, are the right age; take the place of mybrother and myself, go out and fight for our nation, and may Heaven's aid be with you.'	3 Ma ora io sono invecchiato; e però siate in mio luogo e degli miei frategli, e uscite fuori e combattete per la nostra gente; l'aiuto dello Iddio del cielo sia con voi.
4 He then selected twenty thousand of the country's fighting men and cavalry, and these marchedagainst Cendebaeus, spending the night at Modein.	4 Donde loro elessono del paese XX milia uomini combattitori, e cavalieri; e sì andarono incontro a Cendebeo, e dormirono in Modin.
5 Making an early start, they marched into the plain, to find a large army opposing them, both infantryand cavalry; there was, however, a stream-bed in between.	5 E la mattina si levarono, e andarono al campo; ed ecco Cendebeo che venne loro incontro con grande oste di pedoni e con cavalieri; ed era un piccolo fiume in mezzo di loro.
6 John drew up facing them, he and his army and, seeing that the men were afraid to cross the stream-bed, crossed over first himself. When his men saw this, they too crossed after him.	6 Allora mosse il campo [con] il suo popolo contro alla faccia de' nimici; e veggendo che il popolo temeva di passare il fiume, allora passò egli in prima di tutti; e quando loro il vidono passato, si passarono dopo lui.
7 He divided his army into two, with the cavalry in the centre and the infantry on either flank, as the opposing cavalry was very numerous.	7 Ed egli divise il popolo (per ischiere), e mise li cavalieri in mezzo de' pedoni; e certo la cavalleria de' nemici era molto abbondante.
8 The trumpets rang out; Cendebaeus and his army were put to flight, many of them fal ing mortal ywounded and the rest of them fleeing to the fortress.	8 Donde i Giudei sonarono colle sante trombe; e Cendebeo e la sua gente incominciò a fuggire; e molti di loro caddono (morti, e altri) feriti; e gli altri fuggirono nella fortezza.
9 Then it was that Judas, John's brother, was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebaeusreached Kedron, which he had rebuilt.	9 Allora fu ferito Giuda, fratello di Giovanni; ma Giovanni incalzò gli nimici infino a Cedrone, la quale avea edificata (Cendebeo).
10 Their flight took them as far as the towers in the countryside of Azotus, and John burnt these down.The enemy losses amounted to ten thousand men; John returned safely to Judaea.	10 E fuggironsi (anche di loro) infino alle torri ch' erano negli campi d' Azoto, e misele a fuoco. E furono morti di loro due milia uomini; e ritornàronsene in Giudea con pace.
11 Ptolemy son of Abubos had been appointed general in command of the Plain of Jericho; he owned agreat deal of silver and gold,	11 (In quella stagione) Tolomeo, figliuolo di Abobo, era posto duce nel campo di Ierico, e avea molto ariento e oro.
12 and was the high priest's son-in-law.	12 Imperciò ch' egli era genero del sommo sacerdote.
13 His ambition was fired; he hoped to make himself master of the whole country and thereforetreacherously began to plot the destruction of Simon and his sons.	13 Onde il suo animo si levò in alto, e voleva occupare lo paese, e pensava fellonia incontro a Simone e incontro alli suoi figliuoli, per uccidergli.
14 Simon, who was inspecting the towns up and down the country and attending to their administration,had come down to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas, in the year 172, in the eleventh month, the monthof Shebat.	14 Ma Simone ricercava le cittadi del paese di Giudea, abbiendo cura (e sollecitudine) d'esse; e avea menati Matatia e Giuda suoi figliuoli [in Ierico], nel CLXXVII anno (del regno de' Greci), nel mese XI, cioè di febrario.
15 The son of Abubos lured them into a smal fortress cal ed Dok, which he had built, where he offeredthem a great banquet, having previously hidden men in the place.	15 Il figliuolo di Abobo (cioè Tolomeo) ricevette Simone e li suoi figliuoli sopra detti in una sua piccola fortezza, la quale si chiamava Doc, la quale egli avea edificata; e ricevettegli sotto (grande fellonia e) tradimento; imperò ch' egli (fece loro grande tradigione, chè egli) gli convitò a mangiare, e qui nascose alquante persone.
16 When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men reached for their weapons, rushed onSimon in the banqueting hall and killed him with his two sons and some of his servants.	16 E quando Simone e gli suoi figliuoli ebbono mangiato, sì si levò suso Tolomeo e gli (agguati) suoi, e presono le armi, ed entrarono nel convito, e presono lui e due suoi figliuoli, e sì gli fece mettere a morte.
17 He thus committed a great act of treachery and rendered evil for good.	17 E così fece grande inganno nel popolo d' Israel, e rendè male per bene.
18 Ptolemy wrote a report of the affair and sent it to the king, in the expectation of being sentreinforcements and of having the cities and the province made over to him.	18 E Tolomeo scrisse queste cose, e significolle allo re, acciò che gli mandasse l'oste in aiuto, ed egli gli darebbe il paese e le cittadi loro e gli tributi.
19 He also sent people to Gezer to murder John, and sent written orders to the military commanders tocome to him so that he could give them silver, gold and presents;	19 E poi mandò altri uomini in Gazara acciò che uccidessono Giovanni; e mandò dicendo per lettere a' tribuni, che venissono a lui, ed egli darebbe loro ariento e oro e (molti) doni.
20 and he also sent others to seize control of Jerusalem and the Temple mount.	20 E altri ne mandò a pigliare Ierusalem, e il monte del tempio.
21 But someone had been too quick for him and had already informed John in Gezer that his father andbrothers had perished, adding, 'He is sending someone to kil you too!'	21 Ma alcuno uomo, correndo innanzi, disse a Giovanni ch' era in Gazara, come il suo padre era istato morto, e ancora li su?i due fratelli, e che Tolomeo mandava ancora a uccidere lui.
22 Overcome as John was by the news, he arrested the men who had come to kil him and put them todeath, being forewarned of their murderous design.	22 E quando egli lo intese, fortemente sbigottìe; ma egli pure prese quegli uomini venuti a ucciderlo, e fece uccidere loro; però ch' egli sapeva bene che loro cercavano d'uccidere lui.
23 The rest of John's acts, the battles he fought and the exploits he performed, the city wal s he built,and all his other achievements,	23 Tutte l'altre cose de' parlamenti di Giovanni e delle battaglie e virtudi per le quali s'adoperò, e gli edificamenti delle mura le quali edificò, e altre cose de' suoi portamenti,
24 from the day he succeeded his father as high priest, are recorded in the annals of his pontificate.	24 (non sono qui scritte, ma) sono scritte nel libro de' giorni del suo sacerdozio, poi che fu fatto principe de' sacerdoti dopo il suo padre.
