Genesis 39

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA VOLGARE
1 Now Joseph had been taken down into Egypt. Potiphar the Egyptian, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.	1 Adunque è Iosef menato in Egitto; e comperoe lui Putifar, eunuco di Faraone, principe dello esercito, uomo d'Egitto, delle mani di quelli Ismaeliti, da' quali egli era produtto.
2 Yahweh was with Joseph, and everything he undertook was successful. He lodged in the house of hisEgyptian master,	2 E fue lo Signore con lui; ed era uomo facente prode in ogni cosa (del signore suo); il quale abitava (ottimamente) nella casa del signore.
3 and when his master saw how Yahweh was with him and how Yahweh made everything he undertooksuccessful,	3 E veramente conoscea ch' era lo Signore con lui, ed ogni cosa, ch' egli facea, da lui essere dirittamente nella mano sua.
4 he was pleased with Joseph and made him his personal attendant; and his master put him in chargeof his household, entrusting him with al his possessions.	4 E trovò Iosef grazia innanzi al signore suo, e serviva a lui; dal quale fatto proposto, governava la credita casa, e ogni cosa che gli era data.
5 And from the time he put him in charge of his household and al his possessions, Yahweh blessed theEgyptian's household out of consideration for Joseph; Yahweh's blessing extended to al his possessions, bothhousehold and estate.	5 E benedisse lo Signore Iddio la casa di colui d'Egitto per Iosef; e moltiplicoe, così ne'capretti come ne'campi, tutta la sua sustanzia.
6 So he left Joseph to handle al his possessions, and with him there, concerned himself with nothingbeyond the food he ate. Now Joseph was wel built and handsome,	6 Nè altra cosa conoscea, se non lo pane che mangiava; ed era Iosef di bella faccia e di bello aspetto.
7 and it happened some time later that his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, 'Sleep withme.'	7 E dopo molti dì gittò la donna di Putifar gli occhii sopra Iosef, e disse: dormi meco.
8 But he refused. 'Look,' he said to his master's wife, 'with me here, my master does not concernhimself with what happens in the house, having entrusted al his possessions to me.	8 Il quale non acconsentendo all'opera fellonosa, disse a lei: ecco, lo signore mio ogni cosa m'hae dato; non sa quello ch' egli ha nella casa sua.
9 He himself wields no more authority in this house than I do. He has exempted nothing from me exceptyourself, because you are his wife. How could I do anything so wicked, and sin against God?'	9 Niuna cosa è che non sia nella mia podestà, ovvero che non abbia data a me, se non tu, la quale se sua moglie. Adunque, come posso fare io questo male, e peccare nello Signore mio?
10 Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not agree to sleep with her or be with her.	10 Di queste medesime parole per tutti i di la femina molestava lo garzone; ed egli recusava la fellonia.
11 But one day when Joseph came into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the householdhappened to be indoors,	11 Ma intervenne che alcuno die entrò loset nella casa, ed alcuna cosa di lavorio senza albitri facesse:
12 she caught hold of him by his tunic and said, 'Sleep with me.' But he left the tunic in her hand, took tohis heels and got out.	12 e quella, preso lo garzone per lo ghirone del vestimento suo, dicesse: dormi meco. Il quale, lasciato il vestimento nelle sue mani, si fugge e viene fuori.
13 When she saw that he had left the tunic in her hands as he ran out,	13 E conciosia cosa che vedesse la femina la vesta nelle mani sue, ed essere disprezzata,
14 she cal ed her servants and said to them, 'Look at this! My husband brought in a Hebrew to make afool of me! He burst in on me, but I screamed,	14 chiamò gli uomini della casa sua, e disse loro: in verità egli mandò a me l'uomo ebreo, acciò che facesse beffe di noi; e venne a me per volere usare meco; e conciosia cosa ch' io gridassi,
15 and when he heard me scream, he left his tunic beside me and ran out of the house.'	15 ed egli udisse la voce mia, lasciommi lo vestire che tenea, e fuggie fuori.
16 She kept his tunic by her until his master came home.	16 Adunque in argomento di fede, ritenuto lo panno, mostroe al marito ritornando a casa,
17 Then she told him the same tale, 'The Hebrew slave you brought to us burst in on me to make a foolof me.	17 e disse: venne a me lo servo tuo ebreo, il quale tu menasti, acciò facesse beffe a me.
18 But when I screamed, he left his tunic beside me and ran away.'	18 Quando egli mi vide chiamare, lasciò lo panno, e fuggì fuori.
19 When his master heard his wife say, 'This was how your slave treated me,' he became furious.	19 Queste cose udite lo signore, molto credette alle parole della moglie, e adirato s' è molto.
20 Joseph's master had him arrested and committed to the gaol where the king's prisoners were kept.And there in gaol he stayed.	20 E mise Iosef in prigione, dove gli prigioni dello re erano guardati; ed era quivi chiuso.
21 But Yahweh was with Joseph. He showed him faithful love and made him popular with the chiefgaoler.	21 E fue in verità lo Signore Iddio con Josef, ed ebbe misericordia di lui, e diede a lui grazia nel cospetto del principe della carcere.
22 The chief gaoler put Joseph in charge of al the prisoners in the gaol, making him responsible foreverything done there.	22 Il quale mise nelle mani sue tutti li prigioni che nella guardia erano tenuti; e ciò che si facea, sotto lui era.
23 The chief gaoler did not bother about anything put in his charge, since Yahweh was with him, andYahweh made everything he undertook successful.	23 Vè non sapea alcuna cosa di tutte le sue cose a lui date: in verità lo Signore Iddio era con lui, e tutte le opere sue dirizzava.
