Likewise, you wives should be subordinate to your husbands so that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives' conduct1 having witnessed your pure conversation {carried out} in fear;
when they observe your reverent and chaste behavior.2 whose adorning let it not be that outward one of tressing of hair, and wearing gold, or putting on apparel;
Your adornment should not be an external one: braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine clothes,3 but the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible {ornament} of a meek and quiet spirit, which in the sight of God is of great price.
but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which is precious in the sight of God.4 For thus also the holy women who have hoped in God heretofore adorned themselves, being subject to their own husbands;
For this is also how the holy women who hoped in God once used to adorn themselves and were subordinate to their husbands;5 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord; whose children ye have become, doing good, and not fearing with any kind of consternation.
thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him "lord." You are her children when you do what is good and fear no intimidation.6 {Ye} husbands likewise, dwell with {them} according to knowledge, as with a weaker, {even} the female, vessel, giving {them} honour, as also fellow-heirs of {the} grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered.
Likewise, you husbands should live with your wives in understanding, showing honor to the weaker female sex, since we are joint heirs of the gift of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.7 not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing; but on the contrary, blessing {others}, because ye have been called to this, that ye should inherit blessing.
Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate, humble.8 For he that will love life and see good days, let him cause his tongue to cease from evil and his lips that they speak no guile.
Do not return evil for evil, or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing.9 And let him avoid evil, and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it;
For: "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep the tongue from evil and the lips from speaking deceit,10 because {the} eyes of {the} Lord {are} on {the} righteous, and his ears towards their supplications; but {the} face of {the} Lord {is} against them that do evil.
must turn from evil and do good, seek peace and follow after it.11 And who shall injure you if ye have become imitators of that which {is} good?
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears turned to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against evildoers."12 E até sereis felizes, se padecerdes alguma coisa por causa da justiça!
Now who is going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what is good?13 Portanto, não temais as suas ameaças e não vos turbeis. Antes santificai em vossos corações Cristo, o Senhor. Estai sempre prontos a responder para vossa defesa a todo aquele que vos pedir a razão de vossa esperança, mas fazei-o com suavidade e respeito.
But even if you should suffer because of righteousness, blessed are you. Do not be afraid or terrified with fear of them,14 Tende uma consciência reta a fim de que, mesmo naquilo em que dizem mal de vós, sejam confundidos os que desacreditam o vosso santo procedimento em Cristo.
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope,15 Aliás, é melhor padecer, se Deus assim o quiser, por fazer o bem do que por fazer o mal.
but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame.16 Pois também Cristo morreu uma vez pelos nossos pecados - o Justo pelos injustos - para nos conduzir a Deus. Padeceu a morte em sua carne, mas foi vivificado quanto ao espírito.
For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will of God, than for doing evil.17 É neste mesmo espírito que ele foi pregar aos espíritos que eram detidos no cárcere, àqueles que outrora, nos dias de Noé, tinham sido rebeldes,
For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit.18 quando Deus aguardava com paciência, enquanto se edificava a arca, na qual poucas pessoas, isto é, apenas oito se salvaram através da água.
In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison,19 Esta água prefigurava o batismo de agora, que vos salva também a vós, não pela purificação das impurezas do corpo, mas pela que consiste em pedir a Deus uma consciência boa, pela ressurreição de Jesus Cristo.
who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water.20 Esse Jesus Cristo, tendo subido ao céu, está assentado à direita de Deus, depois de ter recebido a submissão dos anjos, dos principados e das potestades.
This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.
