NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to him,1 Erant autem appropinquan tes ei omnes publicani et pec catores, utaudirent illum.
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."2 Et murmurabant pharisaei et scribae dicentes: “ Hicpeccatores recipit et manducat cum illis ”.
So to them he addressed this parable.3 Et ait ad illos parabolam istamdicens:
"What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it?4 “ Quis ex vobis homo, qui habet centum oves et si perdiderit unam exillis, nonne dimittit nonaginta novem in deserto et vadit ad illam, quaeperierat, donec inveniat illam?
And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy5 Et cum invenerit eam, imponit in umeros suosgaudens
and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.'6 et veniens domum convocat amicos et vicinos dicens illis: “Congratulaminimihi, quia inveni ovem meam, quae perierat”.
I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.7 Dico vobis: Ita gaudium erit incaelo super uno peccatore paenitentiam agente quam super nonaginta novem iustis,qui non indigent paenitentia.
"Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it?8 Aut quae mulier habens drachmas decem, si perdiderit drachmam unam, nonneaccendit lucernam et everrit domum et quaerit diligenter, donec inveniat?
And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.'9 Etcum invenerit, convocat amicas et vicinas dicens: “Congratulamini mihi, quiainveni drachmam, quam perdideram”.
In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents."10 Ita dico vobis: Gaudium fit coramangelis Dei super uno peccatore paenitentiam agente ”.
Then he said, "A man had two sons,11 Ait autem: “ Homo quidam habebat duos filios.
and the younger son said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.' So the father divided the property between them.12 Et dixit adulescentior exillis patri: “Pater, da mihi portionem substantiae, quae me contingit”. Etdivisit illis substantiam.
After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.13 Et non post multos dies, congregatis omnibus,adulescentior filius peregre profectus est in regionem longinquam et ibidissipavit substantiam suam vivendo luxuriose.
When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need.14 Et postquam omniaconsummasset, facta est fames valida in regione illa, et ipse coepit egere.
So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.15 Et abiit et adhaesit uni civium regionis illius, et misit illum in villam suam,ut pasceret porcos;
And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any.16 et cupiebat saturari de siliquis, quas porci manducabant,et nemo illi dabat.
Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger.17 In se autem reversus dixit: “Quanti mercennarii patrismei abundant panibus, ego autem hic fame pereo.
I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.18 Surgam et ibo ad patrem meumet dicam illi: Pater, peccavi in caelum et coram te
I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."'19 et iam non sum dignusvocari filius tuus; fac me sicut unum de mercennariis tuis”.
So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.20 Et surgensvenit ad patrem suum.
Cum autem adhuc longe esset, vidit illum pater ipsius et misericordia motus estet accurrens cecidit supra collum eius et osculatus est illum.
His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.'21 Dixitque eifilius: “Pater, peccavi in caelum et coram te; iam non sum dignus vocarifilius tuus”.
But his father ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.22 Dixit autem pater ad servos suos: “Cito proferte stolamprimam et induite illum et date anulum in manum eius et calceamenta in pedes
Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast,23 et adducite vitulum saginatum, occidite et manducemus et epulemur,
because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the celebration began.24 quia hicfilius meus mortuus erat et revixit, perierat et inventus est”. Et coeperuntepulari.
Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing.25 Erat autem filius eius senior in agro et, cum veniret et appropinquaretdomui, audivit symphoniam et choros
He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.26 et vocavit unum de servis et interrogavitquae haec essent.
The servant said to him, 'Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'27 Isque dixit illi: “Frater tuus venit, et occidit patertuus vitulum saginatum, quia salvum illum recepit”.
He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him.28 Indignatus est autem etnolebat introire. Pater ergo illius egressus coepit rogare illum.
He said to his father in reply, 'Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends.29 At illerespondens dixit patri suo: “Ecce tot annis servio tibi et numquam mandatumtuum praeterii, et numquam dedisti mihi haedum, ut cum amicis meis epularer;
But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.'30 sed postquam filius tuus hic, qui devoravit substantiam tuam cum meretricibus,venit, occidisti illi vitulum saginatum”.
He said to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours.31 At ipse dixit illi: “Fili, tu semper mecum es, et omnia mea tua sunt;
But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.'"32 epulari autem et gaudere oportebat, quia frater tuus hic mortuus erat etrevixit, perierat et inventus est” ”.
