NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.1 Tunc simile erit regnum cælorum decem virginibus : quæ accipientes lampades suas exierunt obviam sponso et sponsæ.
Five of them were foolish and five were wise.2 Quinque autem ex eis erant fatuæ, et quinque prudentes :
The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them,3 sed quinque fatuæ, acceptis lampadibus, non sumpserunt oleum secum :
but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.4 prudentes vero acceperunt oleum in vasis suis cum lampadibus.
Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.5 Moram autem faciente sponso, dormitaverunt omnes et dormierunt.
At midnight, there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'6 Media autem nocte clamor factus est : Ecce sponsus venit, exite obviam ei.
Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.7 Tunc surrexerunt omnes virgines illæ, et ornaverunt lampades suas.
The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'8 Fatuæ autem sapientibus dixerunt : Date nobis de oleo vestro, quia lampades nostræ extinguuntur.
But the wise ones replied, 'No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.'9 Responderunt prudentes, dicentes : Ne forte non sufficiat nobis, et vobis, ite potius ad vendentes, et emite vobis.
While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.10 Dum autem irent emere, venit sponsus : et quæ paratæ erant, intraverunt cum eo ad nuptias, et clausa est janua.
Afterwards the other virgins came and said, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!'11 Novissime vero veniunt et reliquæ virgines, dicentes : Domine, domine, aperi nobis.
But he said in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.'12 At ille respondens, ait : Amen dico vobis, nescio vos.
Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.13 Vigilate itaque, quia nescitis diem, neque horam.
"It will be as when a man who was going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.14 Sicut enim homo peregre proficiscens, vocavit servos suos, et tradidit illis bona sua.
To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one--to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately15 Et uni dedit quinque talenta, alii autem duo, alii vero unum, unicuique secundum propriam virtutem : et profectus est statim.
the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five.16 Abiit autem qui quinque talenta acceperat, et operatus est in eis, et lucratus est alia quinque.
Likewise, the one who received two made another two.17 Similiter et qui duo acceperat, lucratus est alia duo.
But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master's money.18 Qui autem unum acceperat, abiens fodit in terram, et abscondit pecuniam domini sui.
After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them.19 Post multum vero temporis venit dominus servorum illorum, et posuit rationem cum eis.
The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.'20 Et accedens qui quinque talenta acceperat, obtulit alia quinque talenta, dicens : Domine, quinque talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia quinque superlucratus sum.
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'21 Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam ; intra in gaudium domini tui.
(Then) the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, 'Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.'22 Accessit autem et qui duo talenta acceperat, et ait : Domine, duo talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia duo lucratus sum.
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'23 Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam ; intra in gaudium domini tui.
Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, 'Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter;24 Accedens autem et qui unum talentum acceperat, ait : Domine, scio quia homo durus es ; metis ubi non seminasti, et congregas ubi non sparsisti :
so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.'25 et timens abii, et abscondi talentum tuum in terra : ecce habes quod tuum est.
His master said to him in reply, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter?26 Respondens autem dominus ejus, dixit ei : Serve male, et piger, sciebas quia meto ubi non semino, et congrego ubi non sparsi :
Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return?27 oportuit ergo te committere pecuniam meam numulariis, et veniens ego recepissem utique quod meum est cum usura.
Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten.28 Tollite itaque ab eo talentum, et date ei qui habet decem talenta :
For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.29 omni enim habenti dabitur, et abundabit : ei autem qui non habet, et quod videtur habere, auferetur ab eo.
And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'30 Et inutilem servum ejicite in tenebras exteriores : illic erit fletus, et stridor dentium.
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne,31 Cum autem venerit Filius hominis in majestate sua, et omnes angeli cum eo, tunc sedebit super sedem majestatis suæ :
and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.32 et congregabuntur ante eum omnes gentes, et separabit eos ab invicem, sicut pastor segregat oves ab hædis :
He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.33 et statuet oves quidem a dextris suis, hædos autem a sinistris.
Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.34 Tunc dicet rex his qui a dextris ejus erunt : Venite benedicti Patris mei, possidete paratum vobis regnum a constitutione mundi :
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me,35 esurivi enim, et dedistis mihi manducare : sitivi, et dedistis mihi bibere : hospes eram, et collegistis me :
naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.'36 nudus, et cooperuistis me : infirmus, et visitastis me : in carcere eram, et venistis ad me.
Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?37 Tunc respondebunt ei justi, dicentes : Domine, quando te vidimus esurientem, et pavimus te : sitientem, et dedimus tibi potum ?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?38 quando autem te vidimus hospitem, et collegimus te : aut nudum, et cooperuimus te ?
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'39 aut quando te vidimus infirmum, aut in carcere, et venimus ad te ?
And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'40 Et respondens rex, dicet illis : Amen dico vobis, quamdiu fecistis uni ex his fratribus meis minimis, mihi fecistis.
Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.41 Tunc dicet et his qui a sinistris erunt : Discedite a me maledicti in ignem æternum, qui paratus est diabolo, et angelis ejus :
For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,42 esurivi enim, et non dedistis mihi manducare : sitivi, et non dedistis mihi potum :
a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'43 hospes eram, et non collegistis me : nudus, et non cooperuistis me : infirmus, et in carcere, et non visitastis me.
Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?'44 Tunc respondebunt ei et ipsi, dicentes : Domine, quando te vidimus esurientem, aut sitientem, aut hospitem, aut nudum, aut infirmum, aut in carcere, et non ministravimus tibi ?
He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.'45 Tunc respondebit illis, dicens : Amen dico vobis : Quamdiu non fecistis uni de minoribus his, nec mihi fecistis.
And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."46 Et ibunt hi in supplicium æternum : justi autem in vitam æternam.
