1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Yahvé dit à Moïse:
2 "Avenge the Israelites on the Midianites, and then you shall be taken to your people."	2 “Fais payer aux Madianites la vengeance d’Israël, et ensuite tu seras réuni à tes pères.”
3 So Moses told the people, "Select men from your midst and arm them for war, to attack the Midianites and execute the LORD'S vengeance on them.	3 Moïse dit au peuple: “Que des hommes parmi vous s’équipent pour la guerre et qu’ils aillent combattre Madian, pour lui infliger la vengeance de Yahvé.
4 From each of the tribes of Israel you shall send a band of one thousand men to war."	4 Vous enverrez à la guerre 1 000 hommes de chacune des tribus d’Israël.”
5 From the clans of Israel, therefore, a thousand men of each tribe were levied, so that there were twelve thousand men armed for war.	5 On recruta donc parmi les milliers d’Israël 1 000 hommes par tribu, soit au total 12 000 hommes entraînés pour la guerre.
6 Moses sent them out on the campaign, a thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest for the campaign, who had with him the sacred vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm.	6 Moïse envoya à la guerre ces 1 000 hommes de chaque tribu, et Pinhas, le fils d’Éléazar le prêtre, les accompagnait; il avait avec lui les objets sacrés et les trompettes éclatantes.
7 They waged war against the Midianites, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male among them.	7 Ils allèrent attaquer Madian, selon l’ordre qu’avait donné Yahvé à Moïse, et ils tuèrent tous les mâles.
8 Besides those slain in battle, they killed the five Midianite kings: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba; and they also executed Balaam, son of Beor, with the sword.	8 À cette occasion ils tuèrent les rois de Madian: Évi, Rékem, Sour, Hour et Réba. C’étaient les cinq rois de Madian. Ils tuèrent encore par l’épée Balaam, fils de Béor.
9 But the Israelites kept the women of the Midianites with their little ones as captives, and all their herds and flocks and wealth as spoil,	9 Les Israélites ramenèrent prisonnières les femmes de Madian, avec leurs petits enfants. Ils ramassèrent toutes les bêtes de somme, tous les troupeaux et tout ce qui leur appartenait,
10 while they set on fire all the towns where they had settled and all their encampments.	10 et ils livrèrent aux flammes toutes leurs villes habitées et leurs campements.
11 Then they took all the booty, with the people and beasts they had captured, and brought the captives, together with the spoils and booty,	11 Après avoir ramassé tout le butin et toutes les dépouilles, hommes et bêtes,
12 to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the Israelite community at their camp on the plains of Moab, along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.	12 ils amenèrent les prisonniers et le butin à Moïse, au prêtre Éléazar et à la communauté des Israélites, dans les Steppes-de-Moab, près du Jourdain face à Jéricho.
13 When Moses and the priest Eleazar, with all the princes of the community, went outside the camp to meet them,	13 Moïse, le prêtre Éléazar et tous les chefs de la communauté sortirent du camp à la rencontre des guerriers.
14 Moses became angry with the officers of the army, the clan and company commanders, who were returning from combat.	14 Moïse se mit alors en colère contre les chefs de l’armée, les chefs de mille et les chefs de cent qui revenaient du combat.
15 "So you have spared all the women!" he exclaimed.	15 Il leur dit: “Vous avez laissé en vie les femmes!
16 "Why, they are the very ones who on Balaam's advice prompted the unfaithfulness of the Israelites toward the LORD in the Peor affair, which began the slaughter of the LORD'S community.	16 Rappelez-vous, ce sont elles qui, sur la parole de Balaam, ont entraîné les Israélites à l’infidélité envers Yahvé (dans l’affaire de Baal-Péor), et aussitôt un fléau s’est abattu sur la communauté de Yahvé.
17 Slay, therefore, every male child and every woman who has had intercourse with a man.	17 Maintenant donc, tuez tous les petits enfants mâles et toutes les femmes qui ont connu un homme.
18 But you may spare and keep for yourselves all girls who had no intercourse with a man.	18 Vous ne laisserez vivre que les filles qui n’ont pas encore connu d’hommes, et elles seront pour vous.
19 "Moreover, you shall stay outside the camp for seven days, and those of you who have slain anyone or touched anyone slain in battle shall purify yourselves on the third and on the seventh day. This applies both to you and to your captives.	19 Parmi vous, tous ceux qui ont tué un homme, tous ceux qui ont touché un cadavre, vont rester sous la tente en dehors du camp pendant sept jours, et ils se purifieront le troisième et le septième jour. Vous ferez de même pour les prisonnières.
20 You shall also purify every article of cloth, leather, goats' hair, or wood."	20 Vous purifierez également tous les habits, tous les vêtements de cuir, tout ce qui est en poil de chèvre ou en bois.”
21 Eleazar the priest told the soldiers who had returned from combat: "This is what the law, as prescribed by the LORD to Moses, ordains:	21 Le prêtre Éléazar dit aux hommes de guerre qui étaient allés au combat: “Voici la règle d’après la loi que Yahvé a donnée à Moïse.
22 Whatever can stand fire, such as gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,	22 Ce qui est en or, en argent, en cuivre, en fer, en étain ou en plomb,
23 you shall put into the fire, that it may become clean; however, it must also be purified with lustral water. But whatever cannot stand fire you shall put into the water.	23 en un mot, tout ce qui va au feu, vous le purifierez par le feu et par l’eau de purification; mais ce qui ne va pas au feu, vous le passerez seulement dans l’eau.
24 On the seventh day you shall wash your clothes, and then you will again be clean. After that you may enter the camp."	24 Le septième jour, après avoir lavé vos vêtements, vous serez purs. Alors vous pourrez regagner le camp.”
25 The LORD said to Moses:	25 Yahvé dit à Moïse:
26 "With the help of the priest Eleazar and of the heads of the ancestral houses, count up all the human captives and the beasts that have been taken;	26 “Avec le prêtre Éléazar et les chefs de famille de la communauté, tu feras le recensement de tout ce qui a été capturé, personnes ou bétail.
27 then divide them evenly, giving half to those who took active part in the war by going out to combat, and half to the rest of the community.	27 Tu partageras le butin en deux: une moitié sera pour les hommes de guerre qui sont allés au combat, l’autre pour la communauté.
28 You shall levy a tax for the LORD on the warriors who went out to combat: one out of every five hundred persons, oxen, asses and sheep	28 Sur la part des hommes de guerre qui sont allés au combat, tu prélèveras la part de Yahvé: un sur 500, qu’il s’agisse des personnes, du gros bétail, des ânes ou du petit bétail.
29 in their half of the spoil you shall turn over to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD.	29 Tu prélèveras cette part sur la moitié qui revient aux guerriers et tu la donneras au prêtre Éléazar, comme prélèvement en l’honneur de Yahvé.
30 From the Israelites' half you shall take one out of every fifty persons, and the same from the different beasts, oxen, asses and sheep, and give them to the Levites, who have charge of the LORD'S Dwelling."	30 Sur la moitié qui est aux Israélites, tu prendras un pour 50, qu’il s’agisse de personnes, de gros bétail, d’ânes, de petit bétail ou de bêtes de somme, et tu le donneras aux Lévites qui ont la garde de la Demeure de Yahvé.”
31 So Moses and the priest Eleazar did this, as the LORD had commanded Moses.	31 Moïse et le prêtre Éléazar firent ce que Yahvé avait ordonné à Moïse.
32 This booty, what was left of the loot which the soldiers had taken, amounted to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,	32 Le butin qu’avait ramené les hommes de guerre comprenait: 675 000 têtes de petit bétail,
33 seventy-two thousand oxen,	33 72 000 têtes de gros bétail,
34 sixty-one thousand asses,	34 61 000 ânes.

36 The half that fell to those who had gone out to combat was: three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	36 La moitié qui revenait aux hommes de guerre comprenait donc 337 500 têtes de petit bétail,
37 of which six hundred and seventy-five fell as tax to the LORD;	37 et la part pour Yahvé sur le petit bétail fut de 675.
38 thirty-six thousand oxen, of which seventy-two fell as tax to the LORD;	38 Il y avait 36 000 têtes de gros bétail, et la part pour Yahvé fut de 72.
39 thirty thousand five hundred asses, of which sixty-one fell as tax to the LORD;	39 Sur les 30 500 ânes, la part pour Yahvé fut de 61.
40 and sixteen thousand persons, of whom thirty-two fell as tax to the LORD.	40 Les prisonnières étaient au nombre de 16 000 et la part pour Yahvé fut de 32.
41 The taxes contributed to the LORD, Moses gave to the priest Eleazar, as the LORD had commanded him.	41 Moïse remit donc au prêtre Éléazar la part de Yahvé, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné à Moïse.
42 The half for the other Israelites, which fell to the community when Moses had taken it from the soldiers, was:	42 Moïse avait séparé la moitié qui revenait aux Israélites de celle qui revenait aux guerriers.
43 three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	43 La moitié qui revenait à la communauté comprenait: 337 500 têtes de petit bétail,
44 thirty-six thousand oxen,	44 36 000 têtes de gros bétail,
45 thirty thousand five hundred asses,	45 30 500 ânes,
46 and sixteen thousand persons.	46 et 16 000 prisonnières.
47 From this, the Israelites' share, Moses, as the LORD had ordered, took one out of every fifty, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites, who had charge of the LORD'S Dwelling.	47 Sur la moitié qui revenait aux Israélites, Moïse préleva un pour 50, sur les personnes comme sur les bêtes de somme, et il les donna aux Lévites qui ont la garde de la Demeure de Yahvé, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné à Moïse.
48 Then the officers who had been clan and company commanders of the army came up to Moses	48 Les chefs de l’armée s’approchèrent alors de Moïse. Ces chefs de milliers, ou de centaines,
49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted up the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.	49 lui dirent: “Tes serviteurs ont fait le recensement des hommes qui sont partis au combat avec nous, il n’en manque pas un seul.
50 So, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD, each of us will bring as an offering to the LORD some gold article he has picked up, such as an anklet, a bracelet, a ring, an earring, or a necklace."	50 Chacun de nous offrira donc à Yahvé ce qu’il a trouvé comme objets en or: chaînettes, bracelets, anneaux, boucles, boules, afin d’obtenir pour nous la miséricorde de Yahvé.”
51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, all of it in well-wrought articles.	51 Moïse et le prêtre Éléazar acceptèrent donc tout cet or travaillé.
52 The gold that they gave as a contribution to the LORD amounted in all to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. This was from the clan and company commanders;	52 Le total de l’or qu’ils avaient apporté, ce que les chefs de milliers et les chefs de centaines avaient mis de côté pour Yahvé, fut de 16 750 sicles;
53 what the common soldiers had looted each one kept for himself.	53 les hommes de troupe gardèrent pour eux leur butin.
54 Moses, then, and the priest Eleazar accepted the gold from the clan and company commanders, and put it in the meeting tent as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.	54 Moïse et le prêtre Éléazar reçurent donc cet or apporté par les chefs de milliers et les chefs de centaines. Ils le remirent à la Tente du Rendez-Vous, devant Yahvé, pour qu’il se souvienne des Israélites.
