The LORD said to Moses,1 And the people set out from Hazeroth, and they pitched their tents in the desert of Paran.
"Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."2 And there, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;3 “Send men, who may examine the land of Canaan, which I will give to the sons of Israel, one from the rulers of each tribe.”
by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;4 Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending, from the desert of Paran, leading men, whose names are these:
Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;5 from the tribe of Ruben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;6 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;7 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;8 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;9 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Nun;
Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;10 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with11 from the tribe of Zebulon, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;12 from the tribe of Joseph, of the scepter of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;13 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;14 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.15 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.16 from the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.
In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,17 These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to examine the land. And he called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.
and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?18 And so, Moses sent them to examine the land of Canaan, and he said to them: “Ascend by the south side. And when you arrive at the mountains,
Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?19 consider the land, as to what kind it may be, and the people, who are its inhabitants, whether they may be strong or weak, whether they may be few in number or many,
Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.20 and the land itself, whether it is good or bad, what kind of cities, walled or without walls,
So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.21 the soil, rich or barren, forested or without trees. Be strong, and bring us some of the fruits of the land.” Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes were ready to be eaten.
Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)22 And when they had ascended, they explored the land from the desert of Sin, all the way to Rehob, as one enters into Hamath.
They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.23 And they ascended by the south side. And they arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman and Shishai and Talmai, the sons of Anak. For Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis, the city of Egypt.
It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.24 And continuing on as far as the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, they cut off a vine with its grapes, which two men carried on a board. Likewise, they took from the pomegranates and the figs of that place,
After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,25 which was called Nehel Eshcol, that is, the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, because the sons of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes from there.
met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.26 And those exploring the land returned after forty days, having circulated through the entire region.
They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.27 And they went to Moses and Aaron, and to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, which is in Kadesh. And speaking to them, and to the entire multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land.
However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.28 And they explained, saying: “We went into the land, to which you sent us, which, it is true, flows with milk and honey, as one can know by these fruits.
Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."29 But it has very strong occupants, and the cities are great and also walled. We saw the race of Anak there.
Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."30 Amalek lives in the south. The Hethite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the mountains. And truly, the Canaanite stays near the sea and around the streams of the Jordan.”
But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."31 During these events, Caleb, to restrain the murmuring of the people who rose up against Moses, said, “Let us ascend and possess the land, for we will be able to obtain it.”
So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,32 Yet truly, the others, who had been with him, were saying, “By no means are we able to ascend to this people, because they are stronger than we are.”
veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."33 And before the sons of Israel they disparaged the land, which they had inspected, saying: “The land, which we viewed, devours its inhabitants. The people, upon whom we gazed, were of lofty stature.
There, we saw some monsters among the sons of Anak, of the race of giants; by comparison with them, we seemed like locusts.”
