NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
In the third year of Cyrus, king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel, who had been named Belteshazzar. The revelation was certain: a great war; he understood it from the vision.1 Anno tertio Cyri regis Per sarum verbum revelatum est Danieli cognomentoBaltassar, et verum verbum et acies magna; intellexitque sermonem, intellegentiaenim fuit ei in visione.
In those days, I, Daniel, mourned three full weeks.2 In diebus illis ego Daniel lugebam tribus hebdomadisdierum,
I ate no savory food, I took no meat or wine, and I did not anoint myself at all until the end of the three weeks.3 panem desiderabilem non comedi, et caro et vinum non introierunt in osmeum, sed neque unguento unctus sum, donec complerentur tres hebdomades dierum.
On the twenty-fourth day of the first month I was on the bank of the great river, the Tigris.4 Die autem vicesima et quarta mensis primi eram iuxta fluvium magnum, qui estTigris,
As I looked up, I saw a man dressed in linen with a belt of fine gold around his waist.5 et levavi oculos meos et vidi: et ecce vir unus vestitus lineis, etrenes eius accincti auro obryzo;
His body was like chrysolite, his face shown like lightning, his eyes were like fiery torches, his arms and feet looked like burnished bronze, and his voice sounded like the roar of a multitude.6 et corpus eius quasi chrysolithus, et facieseius velut species fulgoris, et oculi eius ut lampas ardens, et brachia eius et,quae deorsum sunt usque ad pedes, quasi species aeris candentis, et vox sermonumeius ut vox multitudinis.
I alone, Daniel, saw the vision; but great fear seized the men who were with me; they fled and hid themselves, although they did not see the vision.7 Vidi autem ego Daniel solus visionem; porro viri, qui erant mecum, visionem non viderunt, sed terror nimius irruit super eos, etfugerunt in absconditum.
So I was left alone, seeing this great vision. No strength remained in me; I turned the color of death and was powerless.8 Ego autem relictus solus vidi visionem grandem hanc,et non remansit in me fortitudo, sed et species mea immutata est in me usque addissipationem, nec habui quidquam virium.
When I heard the sound of his voice, I fell face forward in a faint.9 Et audivi vocem sermonum eius; etaudiens vocem sermonum eius iacebam consternatus super faciem meam, et vultusmeus haerebat terrae.
But then a hand touched me, raising me to my hands and knees.10 Et ecce manus tetigit me et erexit me super genua mea et super palmas manuummearum,
"Daniel, beloved," he said to me, "understand the words which I am speaking to you; stand up, for my mission now is to you." When he said this to me, I stood up trembling.11 et dixit ad me: “ Daniel, vir desideriorum, intellege verba, quaeego loquor ad te, et sta in gradu tuo; nunc enim sum missus ad te ”. Cumquedixisset mihi sermonem istum, steti tremens.
"Fear not, Daniel," he continued; "from the first day you made up your mind to acquire understanding and humble yourself before God, your prayer was heard. Because of it I started out,12 Et ait ad me: “ Noli metuere,Daniel, quia ex die primo, quo posuisti cor tuum ad intellegendum et adhumiliandum te in conspectu Dei tui, exaudita sunt verba tua; et ego venipropter sermones tuos.
but the prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kings of Persia,13 Princeps autem regni Persarum restitit mihi viginti etuno diebus; et ecce Michael, unus de principibus primis, venit in adiutoriummeum; et ego remansi ibi iuxta regem Persarum.
and came to make you understand what shall happen to your people in the days to come; for there is yet a vision concerning those days."14 Veni autem, ut docerem te,quae ventura sunt populo tuo in novissimis diebus, quoniam adhuc visio in dies”.
While he was speaking thus to me, I fell forward and kept silent.15 Cumque loqueretur mihi huiuscemodi verbis, deieci vultum meum ad terramet tacui.
Then something like a man's hand touched my lips; I opened my mouth and said to the one facing me, "My lord, I was seized with pangs at the vision and I was powerless.16 Et ecce quasi similitudo filiorum hominis tetigit labia mea; etaperiens os meum locutus sum et dixi ad eum, qui stabat contra me: “ Dominemi, in visione angustiae venerunt super me, et nihil in me remansit virium.
How can my lord's servant speak with you, my lord? For now no strength or even breath is left in me."17 Et quomodo poterit servus domini mei loqui cum hoc domino meo? Nihil enim in meremansit virium, et halitus meus non remansit in me ”.
The one who looked like a man touched me again and strengthened me, saying,18 Rursum ergo tetigitme quasi visio hominis et confortavit me
"Fear not, beloved, you are safe; take courage and be strong."19 et dixit: “Noli timere, virdesideriorum; pax tibi, confortare et esto robustus ”. Cumque loquereturmecum, convalui et dixi: “ Loquere, domine mi, quia confortasti me ”.
When he spoke to me, I grew strong and said, "Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me." "Do you know," he asked, "why I have come to you? Soon I must fight the prince of Persia again. When I leave, the prince of Greece will come;20 Et ait: “ Numquid scis, quare venerim ad te? Et nunc revertar, ut proelieradversum principem Persarum. Et ego egrediar, et ecce princeps Graecorumveniens.
but I shall tell you what is written in the truthful book. No one supports me against all these except Michael, your prince,21 Verumtamen annuntiabo tibi, quod expressum est in scripturaveritatis; et nemo est adiutor meus adversus hos, nisi Michael princeps vester.
