NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came and laid siege to Jerusalem.1 Anno tertio regni Ioachim regis Iudae venit Nabuchodonosor rex BabylonisIerusalem et obsedit eam;
The Lord handed over to him Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and some of the vessels of the temple of God, which he carried off to the land of Shinar, and placed in the temple treasury of his god.2 et tradidit Dominus in manu eius Ioachim regem Iudaeet partem vasorum domus Dei, et asportavit ea in terram Sennaar in domum deorumsuorum et vasa intulit in domum thesauri deorum suorum.
The king told Ashpenaz, his chief chamberlain, to bring in some of the Israelites of royal blood and of the nobility,3 Et ait rex Asfanaz praeposito eunuchorum suorum, ut introduceret de filiisIsrael et de semine regio et tyrannorum
young men without any defect, handsome, intelligent and wise, quick to learn, and prudent in judgment, such as could take their place in the king's palace; they were to be taught the language and literature of the Chaldeans;4 pueros, in quibus nulla esset macula,decoros forma et eruditos omni sapientia, cautos scientia et doctos disciplina,et qui possent stare in palatio regis, et ut docerent eos litteras et linguamChaldaeorum.
after three years' training they were to enter the king's service. The king allotted them a daily portion of food and wine from the royal table.5 Et constituit eis rex annonam per singulos dies de cibis suis etde vino, unde bibebat ipse, ut enutriti tribus annis postea starent in conspecturegis.
Among these were men of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.6 Fuerunt ergo inter eos de filiis Iudae Daniel, Ananias, Misael etAzarias.
The chief chamberlain changed their names: Daniel to Belteshazzar, Hananiah to Shadrach, Mishael to Meshach, and Azariah to Abednego.7 Et imposuit eis praepositus eunuchorum nomina: Danieli Baltassar etAnaniae Sedrac, Misaeli Misac et Azariae Abdenago.
But Daniel was resolved not to defile himself with the king's food or wine; so he begged the chief chamberlain to spare him this defilement.8 Proposuit autem Daniel in corde suo, ne pollueretur de mensa regis neque devino potus eius, et rogavit eunuchorum praepositum, ne contaminaretur.
Though God had given Daniel the favor and sympathy of the chief chamberlain,9 Deditautem Deus Danieli gratiam et misericordiam in conspectu principis eunuchorum;
he nevertheless said to Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king; it is he who allotted your food and drink. If he sees that you look wretched by comparison with the other young men of your age, you will endanger my life with the king."10 et ait princeps eunuchorum ad Daniel: “ Timeo ego dominum meum regem, quiconstituit vobis cibum et potum; qui si viderit vultus vestros macilentioresprae ceteris adulescentibus coaevis vestris, condemnabitis caput meum regi ”.
Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief chamberlain had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,11 Et dixit Daniel ad custodem, quem constituerat princeps eunuchorum superDaniel, Ananiam, Misael et Azariam:
"Please test your servants for ten days. Give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.12 “ Tenta nos, obsecro, servos tuosdiebus decem, et dentur nobis legumina ad vescendum et aqua ad bibendum;
Then see how we look in comparison with the other young men who eat from the royal table, and treat your servants according to what you see."13 etvideantur in conspectu tuo vultus nostri et vultus puerorum, qui vescuntur ciboregio, et, sicut videris, facies cum servis tuis ”.
He acceded to this request, and tested them for ten days;14 Qui, audito sermone huiuscemodi, tentavit eos diebus decem.
after ten days they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young men who ate from the royal table.15 Post diesautem decem apparuerunt vultus eorum meliores et corpulentiores prae omnibuspueris, qui vescebantur cibo regio.
So the steward continued to take away the food and wine they were to receive, and gave them vegetables.16 Porro custos tollebat cibaria et vinum potus eorum dabatque eis legumina.
To these four young men God gave knowledge and proficiency in all literature and science, and to Daniel the understanding of all visions and dreams.17 Quattuor autem pueris his dedit Deus scientiam et disciplinam in omniscriptura et sapientia, Danieli autem intellegentiam omnium visionum etsomniorum.
At the end of the time the king had specified for their preparation, the chief chamberlain brought them before Nebuchadnezzar.18 Completis itaque diebus, post quos dixerat rex, utintroducerentur, introduxit eos praepositus eunuchorum in conspectuNabuchodonosor.
When the king had spoken with all of them, none was found equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and so they entered the king's service.19 Cumque locutus eis fuisset rex, non sunt inventi de universistales ut Daniel, Ananias, Misael et Azarias; et steterunt in conspectu regis.
In any question of wisdom or prudence which the king put to them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his kingdom.20 Et omne verbum sapientiae et intellectus, quod sciscitatus est ab eis, rexinvenit in eis decuplum super cunctos hariolos et magos, qui erant in universoregno eius.
Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.21 Fuit autem Daniel usque ad annum primum Cyri regis.
