1 Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us, look, and see our disgrace:	1 ORAZIONE DI GEREMIA PROFETA. Ricorditi, o Signore, di quel, che è a noi avvenuto: mira, e considera la nostra ignominia.
2 Our inherited lands have been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.	2 La nostra eredità è andata in mano a' forestieri; le nostre case ad estranei.
3 We have become orphans, fatherless; widowed are our mothers.	3 Siam divenuti pupilli privi di padre: le madri nostre son come vedove.
4 The water we drink we must buy, for our own wood we must pay.	4 A prezzo di denaro abbiam bevuta la nostra acqua, col denaro abbiam comperate le nostre legna.
5 On our necks is the yoke of those who drive us; we are worn out, but allowed no rest.	5 Eravamo condotti presi pel nostro collo: requie non concedevasi agli stanchi.
6 To Egypt we submitted, and to Assyria, to fill our need of bread.	6 Agli Egiziani, ed agli Assiri porgemmo le mani, per essere satollati di pane.
7 Our fathers, who sinned, are no more; but we bear their guilt.	7 I padri nostri peccarono, e più non sono: e noi abbiam portate le loro iniquità.
8 Slaves rule over us; there is no one to rescue us from their hands.	8 I servi nostri ci han dominati: non v'ebbe chi dalle mani loro ci riscattasse.
9 At the peril of our lives we bring in our sustenance, in the face of the desert heat;	9 Con pericolo di nostra vita i luoghi deserti andavamo a provvederci di sostentamento, temendo sempre la spada.
10 Our skin is shriveled up, as though by a furnace, with the searing blasts of famine.	10 La nostra pelle è arsa come un forno per l'atrocità della fame.
11 The wives in Zion were ravished by the enemy, the maidens in the cities of Judah;	11 Svergognavano in Sion le donne, e le vergini nella città di Giuda.
12 Princes were gibbeted by them, elders shown no respect.	12 I principi sono stati appiccati per la mano, non hanno avuto rispetto alle facce de' vecchi.
13 The youths carry the millstones, boys stagger under their loads of wood;	13 Hanno disonorati i giovanetti, e i fanciulli son venuti meno sotto il bastone.
14 The old men have abandoned the gate, the young men their music.	14 Mancano alle porte i seniori, i giovani al coro de' suonatori.
15 The joy of our hearts has ceased, our dance has turned into mourning;	15 E estinta nel nostro cuor l'allegrezza: le nostre armonie sono cangiate in lutto.
16 The garlands have fallen from our heads: woe to us, for we have sinned!	16 E caduta la corona dal nostro capo: guai a noi, che abbiamo peccato.
17 Over this our hearts are sick, at this our eyes grow dim:	17 Per questo il cuor nostro è addolorato; per questo han perduto il lume gli occhi nostri.
18 That Mount Zion should be desolate, with jackals roaming there!	18 Perchè desolato è il monte di Sion, le volpi per esso camminano.
19 You, O LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne stands from age to age.	19 Ma tu, o Signore, sarai in eterno, il tuo trono per tutte quante le generazioni.
20 Why, then, should you forget us, abandon us so long a time?	20 Perchè ti scorderai tu per sempre di noi? ci abbandonerai tu per la lunghezza de' giorni?
21 Lead us back to you, O LORD, that we may be restored: give us anew such days as we had of old.	21 Convertici a te, o Signore, e noi ci convertiremo, rinnovella tu i nostri giorni, come da principio.
22 For now you have indeed rejected us, and in full measure turned your wrath against us.	22 Ma tu ci hai rigettati terribilmente: tu se' sdegnato grandemente contro di noi.
