NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
But of these things be not ashamed, lest you sin through human respect:1 Of these things be not thou ashamed, and accept no person to sin thereby:
Of the law of the Most High and his precepts, or of the sentence to be passed upon the sinful;2 Of the law of the most High, and his covenant; and of judgment to justify the ungodly;
Of sharing the expenses of a business or a journey, or of dividing an inheritance or property;3 Of reckoning with thy partners and travellers; or of the gift of the heritage of friends;
Of accuracy of scales and balances, or of tested measures and weights;4 Of exactness of balance and weights; or of getting much or little;
Of acquiring much or little, or of bargaining in dealing with a merchant; Of constant training of children, or of beating the sides of a disloyal servant;5 And of merchants' indifferent selling; of much correction of children; and to make the side of an evil servant to bleed.
Of a seal to keep an erring wife at home, or of a lock placed where there are many hands;6 Sure keeping is good, where an evil wife is; and shut up, where many hands are.
Of numbering every deposit, or of recording all that is given or received;7 Deliver all things in number and weight; and put all in writing that thou givest out, or receivest in.
Of chastisement of the silly and the foolish, or of the aged and infirm answering for wanton conduct. Thus you will be truly cautious and recognized by all men as discreet.8 Be not ashamed to inform the unwise and foolish, and the extreme aged that contendeth with those that are young: thus shalt thou be truly learned, and approved of all men living.
A daughter is a treasure that keeps her father wakeful, and worry over her drives away rest: Lest she pass her prime unmarried, or when she is married, lest she be disliked;9 The father waketh for the daughter, when no man knoweth; and the care for her taketh away sleep: when she is young, lest she pass away the flower of her age; and being married, lest she should be hated:
While unmarried, lest she be seduced, or, as a wife, lest she prove unfaithful; Lest she conceive in her father's home, or be sterile in that of her husband.10 In her virginity, lest she should be defiled and gotten with child in her father's house; and having an husband, lest she should misbehave herself; and when she is married, lest she should be barren.
Keep a close watch on your daughter, lest she make you the sport of your enemies, A byword in the city, a reproach among the people, an object of derision in public gatherings. See that there is no lattice in her room, no place that overlooks the approaches to the house.11 Keep a sure watch over a shameless daughter, lest she make thee a laughingstock to thine enemies, and a byword in the city, and a reproach among the people, and make thee ashamed before the multitude.
Let her not parade her charms before men, or spend her time with married women;12 Behold not every body's beauty, and sit not in the midst of women.
For just as moths come from garments, so harm to women comes from women:13 For from garments cometh a moth, and from women wickedness.
Better a man's harshness than a woman's indulgence, and a frightened daughter than any disgrace.14 Better is the churlishness of a man than a courteous woman, a woman, I say, which bringeth shame and reproach.
Now will I recall God's works; what I have seen, I will describe. At God's word were his works brought into being; they do his will as he has ordained for them.15 I will now remember the works of the Lord, and declare the things that I have seen: In the words of the Lord are his works.
As the rising sun is clear to all, so the glory of the LORD fills all his works;16 The sun that giveth light looketh upon all things, and the work thereof is full of the glory of the Lord.
Yet even God's holy ones must fail in recounting the wonders of the LORD, Though God has given these, his hosts, the strength to stand firm before his glory.17 The Lord hath not given power to the saints to declare all his marvellous works, which the Almighty Lord firmly settled, that whatsoever is might be established for his glory.
He plumbs the depths and penetrates the heart; their innermost being he understands. The Most High possesses all knowledge, and sees from of old the things that are to come:18 He seeketh out the deep, and the heart, and considereth their crafty devices: for the Lord knoweth all that may be known, and he beholdeth the signs of the world.
He makes known the past and the future, and reveals the deepest secrets.19 He declareth the things that are past, and for to come, and revealeth the steps of hidden things.
No understanding does he lack; no single thing escapes him.20 No thought escapeth him, neither any word is hidden from him.
Perennial is his almighty wisdom; he is from all eternity one and the same,21 He hath garnished the excellent works of his wisdom, and he is from everlasting to everlasting: unto him may nothing be added, neither can he be diminished, and he hath no need of any counsellor.
With nothing added, nothing taken away; no need of a counselor for him!22 Oh how desirable are all his works! and that a man may see even to a spark.
How beautiful are all his works! even to the spark and the fleeting vision!23 All these things live and remain for ever for all uses, and they are all obedient.
The universe lives and abides forever; to meet each need, each creature is preserved.24 All things are double one against another: and he hath made nothing imperfect.
All of them differ, one from another, yet none of them has he made in vain, For each in turn, as it comes, is good; can one ever see enough of their splendor?25 One thing establisheth the good or another: and who shall be filled with beholding his glory?
