Sirach 30

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 He who loves his son chastises him often, that he may be his joy when he grows up.	1 Chi ama suo figlio usa spesso la sferza, perché ne gioisca quando è grande.
2 He who disciplines his son will benefit from him, and boast of him among his intimates.	2 Chi disciplina suo figlio avrà poi gioia, ne sarà fiero in mezzo ai conoscenti.
3 He who educates his son makes his enemy jealous, and shows his delight in him among his friends.	3 Chi istruisce suo figlio fa ingelosire il nemico, di lui sarà lieto di fronte agli amici.
4 At the father's death, he will seem not dead, since he leaves after him one like himself,	4 Suo padre è spirato, ma non è morto, ha lasciato dietro a sé uno che gli somiglia.
5 Whom he looks upon through life with joy, and even in death, without regret:	5 In vita, lo ha visto e se n'è rallegrato, quando muore, non deve rammaricarsi.
6 The avenger he leaves against his foes, and the one to repay his friends with kindness.	6 Per i nemici, ha lasciato chi lo vendica, per gli amici, chi ricambia i favori.
7 He who spoils his son will have wounds to bandage, and will quake inwardly at every outcry.	7 Chi vezzeggia il figlio ne fascerà le ferite, ad ogni grido, le sue viscere tremeranno.
8 A colt untamed turns out stubborn; a son left to himself grows up unruly.	8 Un cavallo senza freno diventa ostinato, un figlio troppo libero diventa testardo.
9 Pamper your child and he will be a terror for you, indulge him and he will bring you grief.	9 Còccola tuo figlio e ti darà brutte sorprese, gioca con lui e ti farà soffrire.
10 Share not in his frivolity lest you share in his sorrow, when finally your teeth are clenched in remorse.	10 Con lui non ridere, per non dover piangere e battere i denti quando è grande.
11 Give him not his own way in his youth, and close not your eyes to his follies.	11 Non dargli libertà quando è giovane, e non sorvolare sui suoi errori.
12 Bend him to the yoke when he is young, thrash his sides while he is still small, Lest he become stubborn, disobey you, and leave you disconsolate.	12 Fagli piegare il collo in gioventù, batti i suoi fianchi quando è ragazzo, perché non diventi caparbio e ti disobbedisca e non abbia da lui dispiaceri.
13 Discipline your son, make heavy his yoke, lest his folly humiliate you.	13 Disciplina tuo figlio e òccupati di lui, perché tu non inciampi per la sua depravazione.
14 Better a poor man strong and robust, than a rich man with wasted frame.	14 Meglio il povero sano e forte nel corpo che il ricco tribolato nella salute.
15 More precious than gold is health and well-being, contentment of spirit than coral.	15 Sanità e vigore son meglio di tutto l'oro, una buona salute val più che smisurata ricchezza.
16 No treasure greater than a healthy body; no happiness, than a joyful heart!	16 Non c'è miglior ricchezza che la salute del corpo, né migliore allegrezza che la gioia del cuore.
17 Preferable is death to a bitter life, unending sleep to constant illness.	17 E' meglio la morte che una vita amara, il riposo eterno che una malattia cronica.
18 Dainties set before one who cannot eat are like the offerings placed before a tomb.	18 Vivande versate sulla bocca chiusa son come cibi posti sopra il sepolcro.
19 What good is an offering to an idol that can neither taste nor smell?	19 Che giova all'idolo un'offerta di frutta? Non può mangiarla né odorarla, così è chi è perseguitato dal Signore.
20 So it is with the afflicted man who groans at the good things his eyes behold!	20 Egli guarda con gli occhi e geme, come geme l'eunuco che abbraccia una vergine.
21 Do not give in to sadness, torment not yourself with brooding;	21 Non darti in balìa della tristezza e non affliggerti con la riflessione.
22 Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.	22 La gioia del cuore è vita per l'uomo, la contentezza gli moltiplica i giorni.
23 Distract yourself, renew your courage, drive resentment far away from you; For worry has brought death to many, nor is there aught to be gained from resentment.	23 Distrai te stesso e consola il tuo cuore, tieni lontano da te la tristezza, perché la tristezza ha rovinato molti, non c'è in essa utilità alcuna.
24 Envy and anger shorten one's life, worry brings on premature old age.	24 L'invidia e la rabbia abbreviano i giorni, la preoccupazione porta a precoce vecchiaia.
25 One who is cheerful and gay while at table benefits from his food.	25 Un cuore sereno ha buon appetito, gusta quanto mangia.
