1 Call now! Will anyone respond to you? To which of the holy ones will you appeal?	1 Chiama, dunque! Ti risponderà forse qualcuno? E a chi fra i santi ti rivolgerai?
2 Nay, impatience kills the fool and indignation slays the simpleton.	2 Poiché allo stolto dà morte lo sdegno e la collera fa morire lo sciocco.
3 I have seen a fool spreading his roots, but his household suddenly decayed.	3 Io ho visto lo stolto metter radici, ma imputridire la sua dimora all'istante.
4 His children shall be far from safety; they shall be crushed at the gate without a rescuer.	4 I suoi figli sono lungi dal prosperare, sono oppressi alla porta, senza difensore;
5 What they have reaped the hungry shall eat up; (or God shall take it away by blight;) and the thirsty shall swallow their substance.	5 l'affamato ne divora la messe e gente assetata ne succhia gli averi.
6 For mischief comes not out of the earth, nor does trouble spring out of the ground;	6 Non esce certo dalla polvere la sventura né germoglia dalla terra il dolore,
7 But man himself begets mischief, as sparks fly upward.	7 ma è l'uomo che genera pene, come le scintille volano in alto.
8 In your place, I would appeal to God, and to God I would state my plea.	8 Io, invece, mi rivolgerei a Dio e a Dio esporrei la mia causa:
9	9 a lui, che fa cose grandi e incomprensibili, meraviglie senza numero,
10 He gives rain upon the earth and sends water upon the fields;	10 che dà la pioggia alla terra e manda le acque sulle campagne.
11 He sets up on high the lowly, and those who mourn he exalts to safety.	11 Colloca gli umili in alto e gli afflitti solleva a prosperità;
12 He frustrates the plans of the cunning, so that their hands achieve no success;	12 rende vani i pensieri degli scaltri e le loro mani non ne compiono i disegni;
13 He catches the wise in their own ruses, and the designs of the crafty are routed.	13 coglie di sorpresa i saggi nella loro astuzia e manda in rovina il consiglio degli scaltri.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and at noonday they grope as though it were night.	14 Di giorno incappano nel buio e brancolano in pieno sole come di notte,
15 But the poor from the edge of the sword and from the hand of the mighty, he saves.	15 mentre egli salva dalla loro spada l'oppresso, e il meschino dalla mano del prepotente.
16 Thus the unfortunate have hope, and iniquity closes her mouth.	16 C'è speranza per il misero e l'ingiustizia chiude la bocca.
17 Happy is the man whom God reproves! The Almighty's chastening do not reject.	17 Felice l'uomo, che è corretto da Dio: perciò tu non sdegnare la correzione dell'Onnipotente,
18 For he wounds, but he binds up; he smites, but his hands give healing.	18 perché egli fa la piaga e la fascia, ferisce e la sua mano risana.
19 Out of six troubles he will deliver you, and at the seventh no evil shall touch you.	19 Da sei tribolazioni ti libererà e alla settima non ti toccherà il male;
20 In famine he will deliver you from death, and in war from the threat of the sword;	20 nella carestia ti scamperà dalla morte e in guerra dal colpo della spada;
21 From the scourge of the tongue you shall be hidden, and shall not fear approaching ruin.	21 sarai al riparo dal flagello della lingua, né temerai quando giunge la rovina.
22 At destruction and want you shall laugh; the beasts of the earth you need not dread.	22 Della rovina e della fame ti riderai né temerai le bestie selvatiche;
23 You shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the wild beasts shall be at peace with you.	23 con le pietre del campo avrai un patto e le bestie selvatiche saranno in pace con te.
24 And you shall know that your tent is secure; taking stock of your household, you shall miss nothing.	24 Conoscerai la prosperità della tua tenda, visiterai la tua proprietà e non sarai deluso.
25 You shall know that your descendants are many, and your offspring as the grass of the earth.	25 Vedrai, numerosa, la prole, i tuoi rampolli come l'erba dei prati.
26 You shall approach the grave in full vigor, as a shock of grain comes in at its season.	26 Te ne andrai alla tomba in piena maturità, come si ammucchia il grano a suo tempo.
27 Lo, this we have searched out; so it is! This we have heard, and you should know.	27 Ecco, questo abbiamo osservato: è così. Ascoltalo e sappilo per tuo bene.
