1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:	1 Élifaz de Téman prit alors la parole:
2 Can a man be profitable to God? Though to himself a wise man be profitable!	2 Qu’est-ce qu’un homme peut apporter à Dieu? L’homme de bon sens n’est utile qu’à lui-même.
3 Is it of advantage to the Almighty if you are just? Or is it a gain to him if you make your ways perfect?	3 Qu’importe au Tout-Puissant que tu aies tes raisons? Que gagne-t-il si tu te vois parfait?
4 Is it because of your piety that he reproves you-- that he enters with you into judgment?	4 Est-ce pour ta piété que Dieu te corrige et qu’il te fait un procès?
5 Is not your wickedness manifold? Are not your iniquities endless?	5 N’est-ce pas plutôt que ta méchanceté est grande et tes fautes innombrables?
6 You have unjustly kept your kinsmen's goods in pawn, left them stripped naked of their clothing.	6 Sans motif tu exigeais de tes frères des gages, il restaient nus car tu prenais leur manteau!
7 To the thirsty you have given no water to drink, and from the hungry you have withheld bread;	7 Tu ne donnais pas à boire à l’assoiffé, à l’affamé tu refusais le pain.
8 As if the land belonged to the man of might, and only the privileged were to dwell in it.	8 Qu’arrive un homme fort, il s’empare des terres, et les gens en place s’y installent.
9 You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the resources of orphans you have destroyed.	9 Tu renvoyais les veuves les mains vides et tu brisais les bras de l’orphelin.
10 Therefore snares are round about you, and a sudden terror causes you dismay,	10 C’est pourquoi te voilà entouré de pièges, paralysé soudain par la peur.
11 Or darkness, in which you cannot see; a deluge of waters covers you.	11 La lumière s’est éteinte et tu ne vois plus, les eaux en crue t’ont submergé.
12 Does not God, in the heights of the heavens, behold the stars, high though they are?	12 Bien sûr, Dieu est très haut dans les cieux: vois comme les étoiles sont hautes!
13 Yet you say, "What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?	13 Mais alors tu as dit “Qu’est-ce que Dieu sait? Pourra-t-il juger à travers les nuages?
14 Clouds hide him so that he cannot see; he walks upon the vault of the heavens!"	14 Les nuées font écran et il ne voit pas; il reste à se promener au pourtour des cieux.”
15 Do you indeed keep to the ancient way trodden by worthless men,	15 Veux-tu donc retomber dans les vieux chemins où s’avançaient les habitués du mal?
16 Who were snatched away before their time; whose foundations a flood swept away?	16 Un instant a suffi pour les balayer, la crue des eaux emporta leurs fondations!
17 These men said to God, "Depart from us!" and, "What can the Almighty do to us?"	17 Car ils disaient à Dieu: “Tiens-toi à l’écart! Que peut nous faire le Tout-Puissant?”
18 (Yet he had filled their houses with good things! But far be from me the mind of the impious!)	18 C’est lui qui remplissait leurs maisons de richesses, mais les méchants prenaient leurs décisions sans lui.
19 The just look on and are gladdened, and the innocent deride them:	19 Les justes le voient et se réjouissent, l’homme intègre se moque d’eux:
20 "Truly these have been destroyed where they stood, and such as were left, fire has consumed!"	20 “Leur fortune est anéantie, le feu a dévoré tout ce qu’ils possédaient!”
21 Come to terms with him to be at peace. In this shall good come to you:	21 Allons, rapproche-toi de lui, fais la paix, c’est le moyen de relever ta fortune.
22 Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.	22 Reçois de sa bouche son instruction, et garde en ton cœur ses paroles.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; if you put iniquity far from your tent,	23 Reviens humblement vers le Tout-Puissant, éloigne de ta tente ce qui est injustice,
24 And treat raw gold like dust, and the fine gold of Ophir as pebbles from the brook,	24 ne fais pas plus de cas de l’or que de la terre, de l’or d’Ofir que des pierres du torrent.
25 Then the Almighty himself shall be your gold and your sparkling silver.	25 Le Puissant aussitôt se fera ton or, ta montagne d’argent.
26 For then you shall delight in the Almighty and you shall lift up your face toward God.	26 Tu trouveras ta joie dans le Tout-Puissant, tu lèveras vers lui ton regard.
27 You shall entreat him and he will hear you, and your vows you shall fulfill.	27 Tu l’invoqueras et il t’exaucera; si tu fais un vœu, tu n’auras plus qu’à t’acquitter.
28 When you make a decision, it shall succeed for you, and upon your ways the light shall shine.	28 Tu feras des projets, ils réussiront, la lumière brillera sur tous tes chemins.
29 For he brings down the pride of the haughty, but the man of humble mien he saves.	29 Car Dieu abaisse l’orgueilleux et sauve celui qui tient les yeux baissés.
30 God delivers him who is innocent; you shall be delivered through cleanness of hands.	30 Il délivre l’innocent: si tu as les mains pures, tu seras sauvé!
