NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
1 My spirit is broken, my lamp of life extinguished; my burial is at hand.1 Spiritus meus attenuabitur ;
dies mei breviabuntur :
et solum mihi superest sepulchrum.
2 I am indeed mocked, and, as their provocation mounts, my eyes grow dim.2 Non peccavi,
et in amaritudinibus moratur oculus meus.
3 Grant me one to offer you a pledge on my behalf: who is there that will give surety for me?3 Libera me, Domine, et pone me juxta te,
et cujusvis manus pugnet contra me.
4 You darken their minds to knowledge; therefore they do not understand.4 Cor eorum longe fecisti a disciplina :
propterea non exaltabuntur.
5 My lot is described as evil,5 Prædam pollicetur sociis,
et oculi filiorum ejus deficient.
6 and I am made a byword of the people; their object lesson I have become.6 Posuit me quasi in proverbium vulgi,
et exemplum sum coram eis.
7 My eye has grown blind with anguish, and all my frame is shrunken to a shadow.7 Caligavit ab indignatione oculus meus,
et membra mea quasi in nihilum redacta sunt.
8 Upright men are astonished at this, and the innocent aroused against the wicked.8 Stupebunt justi super hoc,
et innocens contra hypocritam suscitabitur.
9 Yet the righteous shall hold to his way, and he who has clean hands increase in strength.9 Et tenebit justus viam suam,
et mundis manibus addet fortitudinem.
10 But turn now, and come on again; for I shall not find a wise man among you!10 Igitur omnes vos convertimini, et venite,
et non inveniam in vobis ullum sapientem.
11 My days are passed away, my plans are at an end, the cherished purposes of my heart.11 Dies mei transierunt ;
cogitationes meæ dissipatæ sunt,
torquentes cor meum.
12 Such men change the night into day; where there is darkness they talk of approaching light.12 Noctem verterunt in diem,
et rursum post tenebras spero lucem.
13 If I look for the nether world as my dwelling, if I spread my couch in the darkness,13 Si sustinuero, infernus domus mea est,
et in tenebris stravi lectulum meum.
14 If I must call corruption "my father," and the maggot "my mother" and "my sister,"14 Putredini dixi : Pater meus es ;
Mater mea, et soror mea, vermibus.
15 Where then is my hope, and my prosperity, who shall see?15 Ubi est ergo nunc præstolatio mea ?
et patientiam meam quis considerat ?
16 Will they descend with me into the nether world? Shall we go down together into the dust?16 In profundissimum infernum descendent omnia mea :
putasne saltem ibi erit requies mihi ?
