NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
That night the king, unable to sleep, asked that the chronicle of notable events be brought in. While this was being read to him,1 Noctem illam duxit rex insomnem iussitque afferri sibi librummemorialium, annales priorum temporum. Quae cum illo praesente legerentur,
the passage occurred in which Mordecai reported Bagathan and Teresh, two of the royal eunuchs who guarded the entrance, for seeking to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.2 ventum est ad eum locum, ubi scriptum erat quomodo nuntiasset Mardochaeusinsidias Bagathan et Thares duorum eunuchorum ianitorum, qui voluerant manusmittere in regem Asuerum.
The king asked, "What was done to reward and honor Mordecai for this?" The king's attendants replied, "Nothing was done for him."3 Quod cum audisset rex, ait: “ Quid pro hac fide honoris ac praemiiMardochaeus consecutus est? ”. Dixeruntque ei servi illius ac ministri: “Nihil omnino mercedis accepit ”.
"Who is in the court?" the king asked. Now Haman had entered the outer court of the king's palace to suggest to the king that Mordecai should be hanged on the gibbet he had raised for him.4 Statimque rex: “ Quis est, inquit, inatrio? ”. Aman quippe exterius atrium domus regiae intraverat, ut suggereretregi, ut iuberet Mardochaeum suspendi in patibulo, quod ei fuerat praeparatum.
The king's servants answered him, "Haman is waiting in the court." "Let him come in," the king said.5 Responderunt pueri: “ Ecce Aman stat in atrio ”. Dixitque rex: “Ingrediatur ”.
When Haman entered, the king said to him, "What should be done for the man whom the king wishes to reward?" Now Haman thought to himself, "Whom would the king more probably wish to reward than me?"6 Cumque esset ingressus, ait illi: “ Quid debet fieri viro, quem rex honoraredesiderat? ”. Cogitans autem in corde suo Aman et reputans quod nullum aliumrex nisi se vellet honorare
So he replied to the king: "For the man whom the king wishes to reward7 respondit: “ Homo, quem rex honorare cupit,
there should be brought the royal robe which the king wore and the horse on which the king rode when the royal crown was placed on his head.8 debet indui vestibus regiis, quibus rex indutus erat, et imponi super equum, quide sella regis est, et acceperit regium diadema super caput suum;
The robe and the horse should be consigned to one of the noblest of the king's officials, who must clothe the man the king wishes to reward, have him ride on the horse in the public square of the city, and cry out before him, "This is what is done for the man whom the king wishes to reward!' "9 et primus deregiis principibus nobilissimis induat eum et teneat equum eius et per plateamcivitatis incedens clamet et dicat: “Sic honorabitur quemcumque voluerit rexhonorare” ”.
Then the king said to Haman: "Hurry! Take the robe and horse as you have proposed, and do this for the Jew Mordecai, who is sitting at the royal gate. Do not omit anything you proposed."10 Dixitque ei rex: “ Festina et, sumpta stola et equo, fac, ut locutus es,Mardochaeo Iudaeo, qui sedet in foribus palatii; cave, ne quidquam de his, quaelocutus es, praetermittas ”.
So Haman took the robe and horse, clothed Mordecai, had him ride in the public square of the city, and cried out before him, "This is what is done for the man whom the king wishes to reward!"11 Tulit itaque Aman stolam et equum; indutumqueMardochaeum et impositum equo praecedebat in platea civitatis atque clamabat:“ Hoc honore condignus est quemcumque rex voluerit honorare ”.
Mordecai then returned to the royal gate, while Haman hurried home, his head covered in grief.12 Reversusque est Mardochaeus ad ianuam palatii; et Aman festinavit ire indomum suam lugens et operto capite.
When he told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him, his advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you are beginning to decline, is of the Jewish race, you will not prevail against him, but will surely be defeated by him."13 Narravitque Zares uxori suae et amicisomnia, quae evenissent sibi; cui responderunt sapientes, quos habebat inconsilio, et uxor eius: “ Si de semine Iudaeorum est Mardochaeus, ante quemcadere coepisti, non poteris praevalere contra eum, sed cades in conspectu eius”.
While they were speaking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman off to the banquet Esther had prepared.14 Adhuc illis loquentibus, venerunt eunuchi regis et cito eum adconvivium, quod regina paraverat, pergere compulerunt.
