NEW AMERICAN BIBLESAGRADA BIBLIA
Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Zibiah, was from Beer-sheba.1 Joás tinha sete anos quando começou a reinar.
Joash did what was pleasing to the LORD as long as Jehoiada the priest lived.2 Joás fez o bem aos olhos do Senhor durante toda a vida do sacerdote Jojada,
Jehoiada provided him with two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.3 o qual lhe deu por esposas duas mulheres, das quais teve filhos e filhas.
After some time, Joash decided to restore the LORD'S temple.4 Depois disso, Joás tomou a peito restaurar o templo do Senhor.
He called together the priests and Levites and said to them: "Go out to all the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel that you may repair the house of your God over the years. You must hasten this affair." But the Levites did not hasten.5 Convocou os sacerdotes e levitas e lhes disse: Ide e percorrei as cidades de Judá, e delas recolhereis anualmente dinheiro dos israelitas para reparar o templo de vosso Deus. Executai isso com presteza. Mas os levitas não se apressaram.
Then the king summoned Jehoiada, who was in charge, and said to him: "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, and by the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?"6 Então o rei mandou vir o sumo sacerdote Jojada e lhe disse: Por que não cuidaste que os levitas trouxessem de Judá e de Jerusalém a contribuição imposta por Moisés, servo do Senhor, à comunidade de Israel para a tenda do testemunho?
For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had damaged the house of God and had even turned over to the Baals the dedicated resources of the LORD'S temple.7 A ímpia Atalia e seus filhos destruíram a casa de Deus: fizeram servir ao culto de Baal todos os objetos sagrados do templo do Senhor.
At the king's command, therefore, they made a chest, which they put outside the gate of the LORD'S temple.8 Então o rei ordenou que se fizesse um cofre e o colocassem na parte externa da porta do templo.
They had it proclaimed throughout Judah and Jerusalem that the tax which Moses, the servant of God, had imposed on Israel in the desert should be brought to the LORD.9 Em seguida, publicou-se em Judá e em Jerusalém que levassem ao Senhor a contribuição imposta a Israel no deserto, por Moisés, servo do Senhor.
All the princes and the people rejoiced; they brought what was asked and cast it into the chest until it was filled.10 Todos os chefes e todo o povo, cheios de alegria, vieram colocar dinheiro no cofre até que este estivesse cheio.
Whenever the chest was brought to the royal officials by the Levites and they saw that it contained much money, the royal scribe and an overseer for the high priest came, emptied the chest, then took it back and returned it to its place.
Then the king and Jehoiada gave it to the workmen in charge of the labor on the LORD'S temple, who hired masons and carpenters to restore the temple, and also iron-and bronze-smiths to repair it.12 que o rei e Jojada entregavam ao empreiteiro das obras do templo.
The workmen labored, and the task of restoration progressed under their hands. They restored the house of God according to its original form, and reinforced it.13 Os empreiteiros fizeram com que os reparos fossem acabados pelos seus cuidados, e restabeleceram o templo em seu primeiro estado e o consolidaram.
After they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and to Jehoiada, who had it made into utensils for the LORD'S temple, utensils for the service and the holocausts, and basins and other gold and silver utensils.
Jehoiada lived to a ripe old age; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died.15 Jojada, velho e cheio de dias, morreu. Tinha cento e trinta anos.
He was buried in the City of David with the kings, because he had done good in Israel, in particular with respect to God and his temple.16 Sepultaram-no na cidade de Davi, com os reis, pois ele tinha feito o bem em Israel para com o Senhor e seu templo.
After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and the king then listened to them.17 Depois da morte de Jojada, os chefes de Judá vieram e se prostraram diante do rei, e o rei os ouviu.
They forsook the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and began to serve the sacred poles and the idols; and because of this crime of theirs, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.18 Abandonaram o templo do Senhor, Deus de seus pais, e se puseram a adorar as imagens de asserá e outros ídolos, e tamanhas faltas atraíram a ira divina contra Judá e Jerusalém.
Although prophets were sent to them to convert them to the LORD, the people would not listen to their warnings.19 Enviou-lhes o Senhor profetas para os converterem a ele; porém, pregaram em vão, e não foram escutados.
Then the spirit of God possessed Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He took his stand above the people and said to them: "God says, 'Why are you transgressing the LORD'S commands, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have abandoned the LORD, he has abandoned you.'"20 Então o espírito de Deus apossou-se de Zacarias, filho do sacerdote Jojada, o qual se apresentou diante do povo: Eis, disse ele, o que diz o Senhor: Por que transgredis as ordens do Senhor? Nada conseguireis. Porque abandonastes o Senhor, o Senhor vos abandonará.
But they conspired against him, and at the king's order they stoned him to death in the court of the LORD'S temple.21 Mas eles se revoltaram contra ele e o apedrejaram por ordem do rei no átrio do templo do Senhor.
Thus King Joash was unmindful of the devotion shown him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, and slew his son. And as he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and avenge."22 Joás, esquecido dos benefícios que Jojada lhe dispensara, mandou matar o filho. Porem, ao expirar, disse Zacarias: Que o Senhor o veja, e faça vingança!
At the turn of the year a force of Arameans came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, did away with all the princes of the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.23 Ao fim de um ano, o exército dos sírios atacou Joás; invadiu Judá e Jerusalém, massacrou os chefes do povo e enviou todo o seu despojo ao rei de Damasco.
Though the Aramean force came with few men, the LORD surrendered a very large force into their power, because Judah had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers. So punishment was meted out to Joash.24 Embora os sírios tivessem vindo em pequeno número, o Senhor lhes entregou um enorme exército, porque Judá tinha abandonado o Senhor, Deus de seus pais. Assim os sírios fizeram justiça a Joás.
After the Arameans had departed from him, leaving him in grievous suffering, his servants conspired against him because of the murder of the son of Jehoiada the priest. They killed him on his sickbed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.25 Apenas se afastaram, deixando-o como presa de grandes sofrimentos, seus homens, revoltados contra ele por causa do assassínio do filho do sacerdote Jojada, assassinaram-no em seu leito.
These conspired against him: Zabad, son of Shimeath from Ammon, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith from Moab.26 Os conjurados eram Zabad, filho de Semaat, mulher amonita, e Jozabad, filho de Samarit, mulher moabita.
Of his sons, and the great tribute imposed on him, and of his rebuilding of the house of God, there is a written account in the midrash of the book of the kings.
