NEW AMERICAN BIBLEBIBBIA VOLGARE
When Joseph was taken down to Egypt, a certain Egyptian (Potiphar, a courtier of Pharaoh and his chief steward) bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.1 Adunque è Iosef menato in Egitto; e comperoe lui Putifar, eunuco di Faraone, principe dello esercito, uomo d'Egitto, delle mani di quelli Ismaeliti, da' quali egli era produtto.
But since the LORD was with him, Joseph got on very well and was assigned to the household of his Egyptian master.2 E fue lo Signore con lui; ed era uomo facente prode in ogni cosa (del signore suo); il quale abitava (ottimamente) nella casa del signore.
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and brought him success in whatever he did,3 E veramente conoscea ch' era lo Signore con lui, ed ogni cosa, ch' egli facea, da lui essere dirittamente nella mano sua.
he took a liking to Joseph and made him his personal attendant; he put him in charge of his household and entrusted to him all his possessions.4 E trovò Iosef grazia innanzi al signore suo, e serviva a lui; dal quale fatto proposto, governava la credita casa, e ogni cosa che gli era data.
From the moment that he put him in charge of his household and all his possessions, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; in fact, the LORD'S blessing was on everything he owned, both inside the house and out.5 E benedisse lo Signore Iddio la casa di colui d'Egitto per Iosef; e moltiplicoe, così ne'capretti come ne'campi, tutta la sua sustanzia.
Having left everything he owned in Joseph's charge, he gave no thought, with Joseph there, to anything but the food he ate. Now Joseph was strikingly handsome in countenance and body.6 Nè altra cosa conoscea, se non lo pane che mangiava; ed era Iosef di bella faccia e di bello aspetto.
After a time, his master's wife began to look fondly at him and said, "Lie with me."7 E dopo molti dì gittò la donna di Putifar gli occhii sopra Iosef, e disse: dormi meco.
But he refused. "As long as I am here," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, but has entrusted to me all he owns.8 Il quale non acconsentendo all'opera fellonosa, disse a lei: ecco, lo signore mio ogni cosa m'hae dato; non sa quello ch' egli ha nella casa sua.
He wields no more authority in this house than I do, and he has withheld from me nothing but yourself, since you are his wife. How, then, could I commit so great a wrong and thus stand condemned before God?"9 Niuna cosa è che non sia nella mia podestà, ovvero che non abbia data a me, se non tu, la quale se sua moglie. Adunque, come posso fare io questo male, e peccare nello Signore mio?
Although she tried to entice him day after day, he would not agree to lie beside her, or even stay near her.10 Di queste medesime parole per tutti i di la femina molestava lo garzone; ed egli recusava la fellonia.
One such day, when Joseph came into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were then in the house,11 Ma intervenne che alcuno die entrò loset nella casa, ed alcuna cosa di lavorio senza albitri facesse:
she laid hold of him by his cloak, saying, "Lie with me!" But leaving the cloak in her hand, he got away from her and ran outside.12 e quella, preso lo garzone per lo ghirone del vestimento suo, dicesse: dormi meco. Il quale, lasciato il vestimento nelle sue mani, si fugge e viene fuori.
When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand as he fled outside,13 E conciosia cosa che vedesse la femina la vesta nelle mani sue, ed essere disprezzata,
she screamed for her household servants and told them, "Look! my husband has brought in a Hebrew slave to make sport of us! He came in here to lie with me, but I cried out as loud as I could.14 chiamò gli uomini della casa sua, e disse loro: in verità egli mandò a me l'uomo ebreo, acciò che facesse beffe di noi; e venne a me per volere usare meco; e conciosia cosa ch' io gridassi,
When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran away outside."15 ed egli udisse la voce mia, lasciommi lo vestire che tenea, e fuggie fuori.
She kept the cloak with her until his master came home.16 Adunque in argomento di fede, ritenuto lo panno, mostroe al marito ritornando a casa,
Then she told him the same story: "The Hebrew slave whom you brought here broke in on me, to make sport of me.17 e disse: venne a me lo servo tuo ebreo, il quale tu menasti, acciò facesse beffe a me.
But when I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and fled outside."18 Quando egli mi vide chiamare, lasciò lo panno, e fuggì fuori.
As soon as the master heard his wife's story about how his slave had treated her, he became enraged.19 Queste cose udite lo signore, molto credette alle parole della moglie, e adirato s' è molto.
He seized Joseph and threw him into the jail where the royal prisoners were confined. But even while he was in prison,20 E mise Iosef in prigione, dove gli prigioni dello re erano guardati; ed era quivi chiuso.
the LORD remained with Joseph; he showed him kindness by making the chief jailer well-disposed toward him.21 E fue in verità lo Signore Iddio con Josef, ed ebbe misericordia di lui, e diede a lui grazia nel cospetto del principe della carcere.
The chief jailer put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners in the jail, and everything that had to be done there was done under his management.22 Il quale mise nelle mani sue tutti li prigioni che nella guardia erano tenuti; e ciò che si facea, sotto lui era.
The chief jailer did not concern himself with anything at all that was in Joseph's charge, since the LORD was with him and brought success to all he did.23 Vè non sapea alcuna cosa di tutte le sue cose a lui date: in verità lo Signore Iddio era con lui, e tutte le opere sue dirizzava.
