Y'hoshua (יהושע) - Giosuè 5

1 ויהי כשמע כל מלכי האמרי אשר בעבר הירדן ימה וכל מלכי הכנעני אשר על הים את אשר הוביש יהוה את מי הירדן מפני בני ישראל עד עברנו וימס לבבם ולא היה בם עוד רוח מפני בני ישראל	1 When al the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and al the kings of theCanaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before theIsraelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost al courage to resist the Israelites.
2 בעת ההיא אמר יהוה אל יהושע עשה לך חרבות צרים ושוב מל את בני ישראל שנית	2 At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a secondtime).
3 ויעש לו יהושע חרבות צרים וימל את בני ישראל אל גבעת הערלות	3 Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hil of Foreskins.
4 וזה הדבר אשר מל יהושע כל העם היצא ממצרים הזכרים כל אנשי המלחמה מתו במדבר בדרך בצאתם ממצרים	4 The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. Al the males of the people who had come out ofEgypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.
5 כי מלים היו כל העם היצאים וכל העם הילדים במדבר בדרך בצאתם ממצרים לא מלו	5 Now, al the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, duringthe journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;
6 כי ארבעים שנה הלכו בני ישראל במדבר עד תם כל הגוי אנשי המלחמה היצאים ממצרים אשר לא שמעו בקול יהוה אשר נשבע יהוה להם לבלתי הראותם את הארץ אשר נשבע יהוה לאבותם לתת לנו ארץ זבת חלב ודבש	6 for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the menwho had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh hadsworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us, a landflowing with milk and honey.
7 ואת בניהם הקים תחתם אתם מל יהושע כי ערלים היו כי לא מלו אותם בדרך	7 But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they wereuncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.
8 ויהי כאשר תמו כל הגוי להמול וישבו תחתם במחנה עד חיותם	8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they werewel again.
9 ויאמר יהוה אל יהושע היום גלותי את חרפת מצרים מעליכם ויקרא שם המקום ההוא גלגל עד היום הזה	9 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the placehas been cal ed Gilgal ever since.
10 ויחנו בני ישראל בגלגל ויעשו את הפסח בארבעה עשר יום לחדש בערב בערבות יריחו	10 The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of themonth, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.
11 ויאכלו מעבור הארץ ממחרת הפסח מצות וקלוי בעצם היום הזה	11 On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread androasted ears of corn.
12 וישבת המן ממחרת באכלם מעבור הארץ ולא היה עוד לבני ישראל מן ויאכלו מתבואת ארץ כנען בשנה ההיא	12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that yearonwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.
13 ויהי בהיות יהושע ביריחו וישא עיניו וירא והנה איש עמד לנגדו וחרבו שלופה בידו וילך יהושע אליו ויאמר לו הלנו אתה אם לצרינו	13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping anaked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'
14 ויאמר לא כי אני שר צבא יהוה עתה באתי ויפל יהושע אל פניו ארצה וישתחו ויאמר לו מה אדני מדבר אל עבדו	14 He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fel on hisface to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'
15 ויאמר שר צבא יהוה אל יהושע של נעלך מעל רגלך כי המקום אשר אתה עמד עליו קדש הוא ויעש יהושע כן	15 The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the placewhere you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.
