1 ויקחו בני אהרן נדב ואביהוא איש מחתתו ויתנו בהן אש וישימו עליה קטרת ויקרבו לפני יהוה אש זרה אשר לא צוה אתם	1 Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, put fire in it and incense on the fire, andpresented unauthorised fire before Yahweh, which was not in accordance with his orders.
2 ותצא אש מלפני יהוה ותאכל אותם וימתו לפני יהוה	2 At this a flame leapt out from Yahweh's presence and swal owed them up, and they perished beforeYahweh.
3 ויאמר משה אל אהרן הוא אשר דבר יהוה לאמר בקרבי אקדש ועל פני כל העם אכבד וידם אהרן	3 Moses then said to Aaron, 'That is what Yahweh meant when he said: In those who are close to me Ishow my holiness, and before al the people I show my glory.' Aaron remained silent.
4 ויקרא משה אל מישאל ואל אלצפן בני עזיאל דד אהרן ויאמר אלהם קרבו שאו את אחיכם מאת פני הקדש אל מחוץ למחנה	4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron's uncle Uzziel, and said to them, 'Come hereand take your brothers away from the sanctuary, out of the camp.'
5 ויקרבו וישאם בכתנתם אל מחוץ למחנה כאשר דבר משה	5 They came and carried them away, still in their tunics, out of the camp, as Moses had said.
6 ויאמר משה אל אהרן ולאלעזר ולאיתמר בניו ראשיכם אל תפרעו ובגדיכם לא תפרמו ולא תמתו ועל כל העדה יקצף ואחיכם כל בית ישראל יבכו את השרפה אשר שרף יהוה	6 Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Do not disorder your hair or tear your clothes;or you may incur death and his retribution may overtake the whole community. No, it is for the entire House ofIsrael to lament your brothers who have been the victims of Yahweh's fire.
7 ומפתח אהל מועד לא תצאו פן תמתו כי שמן משחת יהוה עליכם ויעשו כדבר משה	7 To avoid incurring death, do not leave the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for Yahweh's anointing oilis on you.' And they did as Moses said.
8 וידבר יהוה אל אהרן לאמר	8 Yahweh spoke to Aaron and said:
9 יין ושכר אל תשת אתה ובניך אתך בבאכם אל אהל מועד ולא תמתו חקת עולם לדרתיכם	9 'When you come to the Tent of Meeting, you and your sons with you, to avoid incurring death you maynot drink wine or any other fermented liquor. This is a perpetual law for all your descendants.
10 ולהבדיל בין הקדש ובין החל ובין הטמא ובין הטהור	10 And so shal it be also when you separate the sacred from the profane, the unclean from the clean,
11 ולהורת את בני ישראל את כל החקים אשר דבר יהוה אליהם ביד משה	11 and when you teach the Israelites any of the decrees that Yahweh has pronounced for them throughMoses.'
12 וידבר משה אל אהרן ואל אלעזר ואל איתמר בניו הנותרים קחו את המנחה הנותרת מאשי יהוה ואכלוה מצות אצל המזבח כי קדש קדשים הוא	12 Moses said to Aaron and his surviving sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Take the cereal offering left overfrom the food burnt for Yahweh. Eat the unleavened part of it beside the altar, since it is especial y holy.
13 ואכלתם אתה במקום קדש כי חקך וחק בניך הוא מאשי יהוה כי כן צויתי	13 Eat it in the holy place, since it is the portion of the food burnt for Yahweh that is prescribed for youand your sons; this is the order I have received.
14 ואת חזה התנופה ואת שוק התרומה תאכלו במקום טהור אתה ובניך ובנתיך אתך כי חקך וחק בניך נתנו מזבחי שלמי בני ישראל	14 'You, your sons and daughters with you, wil eat in a clean place the forequarter offered and the thighpresented, for these have been given to you and your children as your due from the Israelites' communionsacrifices.
15 שוק התרומה וחזה התנופה על אשי החלבים יביאו להניף תנופה לפני יהוה והיה לך ולבניך אתך לחק עולם כאשר צוה יהוה	15 The thigh presented and the forequarter offered, once the fat has been burnt, revert to you and yoursons with you, after they have been presented before Yahweh with the gesture of offering, in virtue of aperpetual law as Yahweh has ordered.'
16 ואת שעיר החטאת דרש דרש משה והנה שרף ויקצף על אלעזר ועל איתמר בני אהרן הנותרם לאמר	16 Moses then enquired careful y about the goat offered as a sacrifice for sin, and found that they hadburnt it. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's surviving sons, and said,
17 מדוע לא אכלתם את החטאת במקום הקדש כי קדש קדשים הוא ואתה נתן לכם לשאת את עון העדה לכפר עליהם לפני יהוה	17 'Why did you not eat this victim for sin in the holy place, since it is especial y holy and was given toyou to take away the community's guilt, by performing the rite of expiation for them before Yahweh?
18 הן לא הובא את דמה אל הקדש פנימה אכול תאכלו אתה בקדש כאשר צויתי	18 Since its blood was not taken inside the sanctuary, you should have eaten its meat there, as Iordered you.'
19 וידבר אהרן אל משה הן היום הקריבו את חטאתם ואת עלתם לפני יהוה ותקראנה אתי כאלה ואכלתי חטאת היום הייטב בעיני יהוה	19 Aaron said to Moses, 'Look, today they offered their sacrifice for sin and their burnt offering beforeYahweh, and these disasters have befal en me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would this have met withYahweh's approval?'
20 וישמע משה וייטב בעיניו	20 And when Moses heard this, he was satisfied.
