Giosuè 24

1 Indi Giosuè congregò tutte le tribù d'Israele in Sichem, e chiamò a sè i seniori, e i principi, e i giudici, e i magistrati: e si presentarono dinanzi al Signore.	1 And Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, and he called those greater by birth, and the leaders and judges and teachers. And they stood in the sight of the Lord.
2 Ed egli parlò così al popolo: Queste cose dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Di là dal fiume abitarono da principio i padri vostri, Thare padre di Abramo, e Nachor: e servirono agli dei stranieri.	2 And he spoke to the people in this way: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Your fathers lived, in the beginning, across the river: Terah, the father of Abraham, and Nahor. And they served strange gods.
3 Trassi io adunque il padre vostro Abramo da' confini della Mesopotamia, e lo condussi nella terra di Chanaan, e moltiplicai la sua stirpe:	3 Then I brought your father Abraham from the parts of Mesopotamia, and I led him into the land of Canaan. And I multiplied his offspring,
4 E gli diedi Isacco: e a questo diedi Giacobbe, ed Esaù. E ad Esaù io diedi in retaggio il monte Seir: ma Giacobbe, e i suoi figliuoli scesero nell'Egitto.	4 and I gave to him Isaac. And to him, I gave again Jacob and Esau. And I gave mount Seir to Esau as a possession. Yet truly, Jacob and his sons descended into Egypt.
5 E mandai Mosè, ed Aronne, e flagellai l’Egitto con segni, e prodigii in gran numero.	5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I struck Egypt with many signs and portents.
6 E trassi voi, e i padri vostri dall’Egitto, e arrivaste al mare: e gli Egiziani inseguirono i padri vostri co' loro cocchi, e cavalieri fino al mar Rosso.	6 And I led you and your fathers away from Egypt, and you arrived at the sea. And the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen, as far as the Red Sea.
7 E i figliuoli d'Israele alzarono le grida al Signore: ed egli mise folte tenebre tra voi e gli Egiziani, e mandò addosso a loro il mare che li ricoperse. Gli occhi vostri videro tutto quel che io feci in Egitto: e (dipoi) abitaste molto tempo nella solitudine.	7 Then the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord. And he stationed a darkness between you and the Egyptians, and he led the sea over them, and he covered them. Your eyes saw all that I did in Egypt, and you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
8 E v’introdussi nella terra degli Amorrehei che abitavano di là dal Giordano, e quando essi combattevano contro di voi, io li diedi nelle vostre mani, e voi occupaste il loro paese, e deste loro la morte.	8 And I led you into the land of the Amorite, who was living beyond the Jordan. And when they fought against you, I delivered them into your hands, and you possessed their land, and you put them to death.
9 E si levò su Balac figliuolo di Sephor re di Moab, e combattè contro Israele. E mandò a chiamare Balaam, figliuolo di Beor, perché vi maledicesse:	9 Then Balak, the son of Zippor, the king of Moab, rose up and fought against Israel. And he sent and called for Balaam, the son of Beor, so that he might curse you.
10 Ma io non volli ascoltarlo; ma per lo contrario per bocca di lui vi benedissi, e vi liberai dalle sue mani.	10 And I was not willing to listen to him, but on the contrary, I blessed you through him, and I freed you from his hand.
11 E passate il Giordano, e giungeste a Gerico. E combatterono contro di voi gli abitanti di questa città, l’Amorrheo, e il Pherezeo, e il Chananeo, e l’Hetheo, e il Gergeseo, e l’Heveo, e lo Jebuseo, e li diedi nelle mani vostre.	11 And you crossed over the Jordan, and you arrived at Jericho. And the men of that city fought against you: the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. And I delivered them into your hands.
12 E spedii innanzi a voi torme di calabroni, e discacciai da’ luoghi loro due re Amorrhei non per mezzo della tua spada, né del tuo arco,	12 And I sent wasps before you. And I drove them from their places, the two kings of the Amorites, but not by your sword, and not by your bow.
13 E vi diedi una terra non da voi ridotta a cultura, e città non edificate da voi, perché le abitaste; vigne, e uliveti non piantati da voi.	13 And I gave you a land, in which you did not labor, and cities, which you did not build, so that you might live in them, and vineyards and olive groves, which you did not plant.’
14 Or adunque temete il Signore, e servitelo con cuore perfetto, e sincerissimo, e togliete via gli dei, a' quali servirono i padri vostri nella Mesopotamia, e nell’Egitto; e servite al Signore.	14 Now therefore, fear the Lord, and serve him with a perfect and very sincere heart. And take away the gods that your fathers served in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.
15 Che se il servire al Signore vi sembra un male, vi si permette di ottare: eleggete oggi quel che vi pare, e a chi piuttosto servir dobbiate: se agli dei, a’ quali servirono i padri vostri nella Mesopotamia, ovvero agli dei dell’Amorrheo, nella terra del quale abitate: io poi, e la mia casa serviremo al Signore.	15 But if it seems evil to you that you would serve the Lord, a choice is given to you. Choose today what pleases you, and whom you ought to serve above all else, either the gods that your fathers served in Mesopotamia, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
16 E il popolo rispose, e disse: Lungi da noi l’abbandonare il Signore, e servire a dei stranieri.	16 And the people responded, and they said: “Far be it from us that we would forsake the Lord, and serve foreign gods.
17 Il Signore Dio nostro egli stesso ci trasse noi, e i padri nostri dalla terra d’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù; e fece sugli occhi nostri prodigii grandi, e ci protesse per tutto il viaggio che facemmo, e da tutti i popoli, pe’ quali passammo.	17 The Lord our God himself led us and our fathers away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude. And he accomplished immense signs in our sight, and he preserved us along the entire way by which we journeyed, and among all the people through whom we passed.
18 E ha scacciate tutte queste nazioni, e l’Amorrheo abitatore della terra, in cui siamo entrati. Noi adunque serviremo al Signore, perché egli è il nostro Dio.	18 And he cast out all the nations, the Amorite, the inhabitant of the land that we entered. And so, we will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”
19 E Giosuè disse al popolo: Voi non potrete servire al Signore: perocchè il Signore è santo, e forte, e geloso: e non soffrirà le vostre iniquità, e i vostri peccati.	19 And Joshua said to the people: “You will not be able to serve the Lord. For he is a holy and powerful God, and he is jealous, and he will not ignore your wickedness and sins.
20 Se abbandonerete il Signore, e servirete a dei stranieri, egli si volterà contro di voi, e vi flagellerà, e vi sperderà dopo avervi fatto tanto bene.	20 If you leave behind the Lord, and you serve foreign gods, he will turn himself, and he will afflict you, and he will overthrow you, after all the good that he has offered to you.”
21 E il popolo disse a Giosuè: Non sarà come tu dici: ma serviremo al Signore.	21 And the people said to Joshua, “By no means will it be as you are saying, but we will serve the Lord.”
22 E Giosuè al popolo: Testimoni siete voi, come vi siete eletto il Signore per servire a lui. Ed essi risposero: Siam testimoni.	22 And Joshua said to the people, “You yourselves are witnesses, that you have chosen the Lord so that you may serve him.” And they answered, “We are witnesses.”
23 Or adunque (diss’egli) togliete di mezzo a voi gli dei stranieri, e soggettate i cuori vostri al Signore Dio d’Israele.	23 “Now therefore,” he said, “take away strange gods from among yourselves, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
24 E il popolo disse a Giosuè: Serviremo il Signore Dio nostro, e saremo obbedienti ai suoi comandamenti.	24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God, and we will be obedient to his precepts.”
25 Giosuè adunque fermò in quel giorno il patto, e propose al popolo i precetti, e le leggi (del Signore) in Sichem.	25 Therefore, on that day, Joshua struck a covenant, and he set before the people at Shechem the precepts and the judgments.
26 Scrisse ancora tutte queste cose nel libro della legge del Signore: e prese una pietra stragrande, e la pose sotto una quercia, che era nel santuario del Signore.	26 He also wrote all these things in the volume of the law of the Lord. And he took a very great stone, and he stationed it under the oak that was in the Sanctuary of the Lord.
27 E disse a tutto il popolo: Ecco questa pietra, che vi servirà di testimone, come ha udite tutte le parole che il Signore ha dette a voi: affinchè non vi venga poi la voglia di negare, e dir bugia al Signore Dio vostro.	27 And he said to all the people, “Lo, this stone shall be to you as a testimony, which has heard all the words of the Lord that he has spoken to you, lest perhaps, afterward, you might choose to deny it, and to lie to the Lord your God.”
28 E congedò il popolo, che andasser ciascun alle loro terre.	28 And he dismissed the people, each one to their own possession.
29 Dopo di che Giosuè figliuolo di Nun, servo del Signore, morì di cento dieci anni:	29 And after these things, Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.
30 E lo seppellirono ai confini del suo retaggio in Thamnath-sare, che è situata sul monte Ephraim, dalla parte settentrionale del monte Gaas.	30 And they buried him within the borders of his possession at Timnath-Serah, which is situated on mount Ephraim, before the northern side of mount Gaash.
31 E Israele servì al Signore tutto il tempo della vita di Giosuè, e de' seniori, i quali vissero lungamente dopo Giosuè, e sapevano tutte le opere fatte dal Signore per Israele.	31 And Israel served the Lord during all the days of Joshua, and of the elders who lived for a long time after Joshua, and who had known all the works of the Lord that he had accomplished in Israel.
32 Eglino ancora seppellirono le ossa di Giuseppe (le quali da’ figliuoli d’Israele erano state portate dall’Egitto) in Sichem, nella parte del campo, la quale Giacobbe avea comprata da' figliuoli di Hemor padre di Sichem per cento pecore novelle, e fu poscia nella porzione de’ figliuoli di Giuseppe.	32 And the bones of Joseph, which the sons of Israel had brought from Egypt, they buried at Shechem, in a portion of the field that Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred young female sheep, and so it was in the possession of the sons of Joseph.
33 E morì anche Eleazaro figliuolo di Aronne, e lo seppellirono sul monte Ephraim in Gabaath, la quale era stata data a Phinees suo figliuolo.	33 Likewise, Eleazar, the son of Aaron, died. And they buried him at Gibeah, which belongs to Phinehas, his son, and which was given to him on mount Ephraim.
