1 E Sedecia figliuolo di Giosia ebbe il regno in luogo di Jeconia figliuolo di Joachim, essendo stato constituito re del paese da Nabuchodonosor re di Babilonia.	1 Coniah, son of Jehoiakim, was succeeded by King Zedekiah, son of Josiah; he was made king over the land of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.
2 E non ubbidì né egli, né i suoi servidori, né il popolo alle parole dette dal Signore per bocca del profeta Geremia.	2 Neither he, nor his ministers, nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.
3 E il re Sedecia mandò Juchal figliuolo di Selemia, e Sofonia figliuolo di Maasia sacerdote a dire al profeta Geremia: Fa orazione per noi al Signore Dio nostro.	3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah with this request: "Pray to the LORD, our God, for us."
4 Or Geremia andava, e stava liberamente in mezzo al popolo: perocché non lo avevano messo in prigione. Frattanto l'esercito di Faraone uscì dall'Egitto, e udita questa nuova i Caldei, che assediavan Gerusalemme, se ne ritirarono.	4 At this time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison; he still came and went freely among the people.
5 E il Signore parlò a Geremia profeta, dicendo:	5 Also, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this report they marched away from the city.
6 Queste cose dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Voi direte così al re di Giuda, il quale vi ha mandati a consultarmi: Ecco, che l'esercito di Faraone, che veniva in vostro soccorso, se ne tornerà nella sua terra, in Egitto:	6 This word of the LORD then came to the prophet Jeremiah:
7 E i Caldei torneranno, e combatteranno questa città, e la espugeranno, e la incendieranno.	7 Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Give this answer to the king of Judah who sent you to me to consult me: Pharaoh's army which has set out to help you will return to its own land, Egypt.
8 Queste cose dice il Signore: Non ingannate voi stessi, dicendo: Se ne anderanno assolutamente, e si allontaneranno da noi i Caldei: perocché ei non se ne anderanno.	8 The Chaldeans shall return to the fight against this city; they shall capture it and destroy it with fire.
9 Ma quand'anche voi disfaceste tutto l'esercito de' Caldei, che combattono contro di voi, e restasser di loro o solamente alcuni feriti, uscirebbe ognun di questi dalla sua tenda, e incendierebbero questa città.	9 Thus says the LORD: Do not deceive yourselves with the thought that the Chaldeans will leave you for good, because they shall not leave!
10 Essendosi adunque l'esercito de' Caldei ritirato da Gerusalemme per ragion dell'esercito di Faraone,	10 Even if you were to defeat the whole Chaldean army now attacking you, and only the wounded remained, each in his tent, these would rise up and destroy the city with fire.
11 Si partì Geremia da Gerusalemme per andare nella terra di Benjamin, per ivi spartire una possessione alla presenza de' cittadini;	11 When the Chaldean army lifted the siege of Jerusalem at the threat of the army of Pharaoh,
12 E arrivato, ch'ei fu alla porta di Beniamin, il custode, che era ivi di turno, di nome Geria figliuolo di Selemia, figliuolo di Hanama, fermò Geremia profeta, dicendo: Tu vai a trovare i Caldei.	12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the district of Benjamin, to take part with his family in the division of an inheritance.
13 E Geremia rispose: Questo è falso, non vo' a trovare i Caldei. Ma Geria non l'ascoltò, e preso Geremia lo menò ai principi.	13 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, he met the captain of the guard, a man named Irijah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah; he seized the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"
14 I principi adunque adirati contro Geremia, fattolo battere, lo poser nella carcere, che era nella casa di Jonathan segretario: imperocché egli avea la soprintendenza della carcere.	14 "That is a lie!" Jeremiah answered, "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." Without listening, Irijah kept Jeremiah in custody and brought him to the princes.
15 Entrò adunque Geremia nella fossa, e nell'ergastolo, e vi stette per molti giorni.	15 The princes were enraged, and had Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they were using as a jail.
16 Ma il re Sedecia mandò a cavarlo, e lo interrogò in casa sua segretamente, e disse: V'ha egli qualche Parola da parte del Signore? E Geremia disse: Havvi; e soggiunse: Tu sarai dato in potere del re di Babilonia.	16 And so Jeremiah entered the vaulted dungeon, where he remained a long time.
17 E disse Geremia al re Sedecia: Qual fallo ho io commesso contro di te, e contro de' servitori tuoi, e contro il tuo popolo, per ragion del quale tu mi hai mandato in prigione?	17 Once King Zedekiah had him brought to his palace and he asked him secretly whether there was any message from the LORD. Yes! Jeremiah answered: you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon.
18 Dove sono que' vostri profeti, i quali profetizzavano a voi, e dicevano: Non verrà il re di Babilonia sopra di voi, e sopra la vostra terra?	18 Jeremiah then asked King Zedekiah: In what have I wronged you, or your ministers, or this people, that you should put me in prison?
19 Adesso pertanto ascolta, o re mio signore; vaglia la mia preghiera dinanzi a te, e non rimandarmi a casa di Jonathan segretario, perchè io non vi muoia.	19 And where are your own prophets now,
20 Comandò adunque il re Sedecia, che Geremia fosse messo nel vestibolo della prigione, e che se gli desse ogni giorno un pane, oltre il companatico, fino a tanto che vi restasse pane in città: e Geremia se ne stava nel vestibolo della prigione.	20 who prophesied to you that the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? Hear now, my lord king, and grant my petition: do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I shall die there.
	21 King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the quarters of the guard, and given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers' shop until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard.
