John 11

1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.	1 Erat autem quidam lan guens Lazarus a Bethania, de castello Mariae etMarthae sororis eius.
2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)	2 Maria autem erat, quae unxit Dominum unguento etextersit pedes eius capillis suis, cuius frater Lazarus infirmabatur.
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.	3 Miseruntergo sorores ad eum dicentes: “ Domine, ecce, quem amas, infirmatur ”.
4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.	4 Audiens autem Iesus dixit: “ Infirmitas haec non est ad mortem sed progloria Dei, ut glorificetur Filius Dei per eam ”.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.	5 Diligebat autem IesusMartham et sororem eius et Lazarum.
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.	6 Ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur, tuncquidem mansit in loco, in quo erat, duobus diebus;
7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.	7 deinde post hoc dicitdiscipulis: “ Eamus in Iudaeam iterum ”.
8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?	8 Dicunt ei discipuli: “ Rabbi,nunc quaerebant te Iudaei lapidare, et iterum vadis illuc? ”.
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.	9 ResponditIesus: “ Nonne duodecim horae sunt diei? Si quis ambulaverit in die, nonoffendit, quia lucem huius mundi videt;
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.	10 si quis autem ambulaverit in nocte,offendit, quia lux non est in eo ”.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.	11 Haec ait et post hoc dicit eis: “Lazarus amicus noster dormit, sed vado, ut a somno exsuscitem eum ”.
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.	12 Dixerunt ergo ei discipuli: “ Domine, si dormit, salvus erit ”.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.	13 Dixeratautem Iesus de morte eius, illi autem putaverunt quia de dormitione somnidiceret.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.	14 Tunc ergo dixit eis Iesus manifeste: “ Lazarus mortuus est,
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.	15 etgaudeo propter vos, ut credatis, quoniam non eram ibi; sed eamus ad eum ”.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.	16 Dixit ergo Thomas, qui dicitur Didymus, ad condiscipulos: “ Eamus et nos, utmoriamur cum eo! ”.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.	17 Venit itaque Iesus et invenit eum quattuor dies iam in monumento habentem.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:	18 Erat autem Bethania iuxta Hierosolymam quasi stadiis quindecim.
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.	19 Multi autemex Iudaeis venerant ad Martham et Mariam, ut consolarentur eas de fratre.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.	20 Martha ergo ut audivit quia Iesus venit, occurrit illi; Maria autem domisedebat.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	21 Dixit ergo Martha ad Iesum: “ Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meusnon esset mortuus!
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.	22 Sed et nunc scio quia, quaecumque poposceris a Deo, dabittibi Deus ”.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.	23 Dicit illi Iesus: “ Resurget frater tuus ”.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.	24 Dicit eiMartha: “ Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die ”.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:	25 Dixitei Iesus: “ Ego sum resurrectio et vita. Qui credit in me, etsi mortuusfuerit, vivet;
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?	26 et omnis, qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in aeternum.Credis hoc? ”.
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.	27 Ait illi: “ Utique, Domine; ego credidi quia tu esChristus Filius Dei, qui in mundum venisti ”.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.	28 Et cum haec dixisset, abiit et vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio dicens:“ Magister adest et vocat te ”.
29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.	29 Illa autem ut audivit, surrexit cito etvenit ad eum;
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.	30 nondum enim venerat Iesus in castellum, sed erat adhuc in illoloco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.	31 Iudaei igitur, qui erant cum ea in domo etconsolabantur eam, cum vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit et exiit, secuti sunteam putantes: “ Vadit ad monumentum, ut ploret ibi ”.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	32 Maria ergo, cumvenisset ubi erat Iesus, videns eum cecidit ad pedes eius dicens ei: “ Domine,si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus! ”.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,	33 Iesus ergo, ut vidit eamplorantem et Iudaeos, qui venerant cum ea, plorantes, fremuit spiritu etturbavit seipsum
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.	34 et dixit: “ Ubi posuistis eum? ”. Dicunt ei: “ Domine,veni et vide ”.
35 Jesus wept.	35 Lacrimatus est Iesus.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!	36 Dicebant ergo Iudaei: “ Eccequomodo amabat eum! ”.
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?	37 Quidam autem dixerunt ex ipsis: “ Non poterat hic,qui aperuit oculos caeci, facere, ut et hic non moreretur? ”.
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.	38 Iesus ergo rursum fremens in semetipso, venit ad monumentum; erat autemspelunca, et lapis superpositus erat ei.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.	39 Ait Iesus: “ Tollite lapidem! ”.Dicit ei Martha, soror eius, qui mortuus fuerat: “ Domine, iam foetet;quatriduanus enim est! ”.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?	40 Dicit ei Iesus: “ Nonne dixi tibi quoniam, sicredideris, videbis gloriam Dei? ”.
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.	41 Tulerunt ergo lapidem. Iesus autem,elevatis sursum oculis, dixit: “ Pater, gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.	42 Ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis, sed propter populum, qui circumstat,dixi, ut credant quia tu me misisti ”.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.	43 Et haec cum dixisset, voce magnaclamavit: “ Lazare, veni foras! ”.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.	44 Prodiit, qui fuerat mortuus, ligatuspedes et manus institis; et facies illius sudario erat ligata. Dicit Iesus eis:“ Solvite eum et sinite eum abire ”.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.	45 Multi ergo ex Iudaeis, qui venerantad Mariam et viderant, quae fecit, crediderunt in eum;
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.	46 quidam autem ex ipsisabierunt ad pharisaeos et dixerunt eis, quae fecit Iesus.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.	47 Collegerunt ergopontifices et pharisaei concilium et dicebant: “ Quid facimus, quia hic homomulta signa facit?
48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.	48 Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum, et venientRomani et tollent nostrum et locum et gentem! ”.
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,	49 Unus autem ex ipsis,Caiphas, cum esset pontifex anni illius, dixit eis: “ Vos nescitis quidquam
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.	50 nec cogitatis quia expedit vobis, ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non totagens pereat! ”.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;	51 Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit; sed, cum esset pontifexanni illius, prophetavit quia Iesus moriturus erat pro gente
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.	52 et non tantumpro gente, sed et ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret in unum.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.	53 Abillo ergo die cogitaverunt, ut interficerent eum.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.	54 Iesus ergo iam non in palam ambulabat apud Iudaeos, sed abiit inde inregionem iuxta desertum, in civitatem, quae dicitur Ephraim, et ibi morabaturcum discipulis.
55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.	55 Proximum autem erat Pascha Iudaeorum, et ascenderunt multi Hierosolymam deregione ante Pascha, ut sanctificarent seipsos.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?	56 Quaerebant ergo Iesum etcolloquebantur ad invicem in templo stantes: “ Quid videtur vobis? Numquidveniet ad diem festum? ”.
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.	57 Dederant autem pontifices et pharisaei mandatum,ut, si quis cognoverit, ubi sit, indicet, ut apprehendant eum.
