KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,1 Fil ed with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert,
Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.2 for forty days being put to the test by the devil. During that time he ate nothing and at the end he washungry.
And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.3 Then the devil said to him, 'If you are Son of God, tel this stone to turn into a loaf.'
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.4 But Jesus replied, 'Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone.'
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.5 Then leading him to a height, the devil showed him in a moment of time al the kingdoms of the world
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.6 and said to him, 'I wil give you al this power and their splendour, for it has been handed over to me, forme to give it to anyone I choose.
If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.7 Do homage, then, to me, and it shal al be yours.'
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.8 But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: You must do homage to the Lord your God, him alone youmust serve.'
And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:9 Then he led him to Jerusalem and set him on the parapet of the Temple. 'If you are Son of God,' he saidto him, 'throw yourself down from here,
For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:10 for scripture says: He has given his angels orders about you, to guard you, and again:
And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.11 They wil carry you in their arms in case you trip over a stone.'
And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.12 But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'
And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.13 Having exhausted every way of putting him to the test, the devil left him, until the opportune moment.
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.14 Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout thecountryside.
And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.15 He taught in their synagogues and everyone glorified him.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.16 He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath dayas he usually did. He stood up to read,
And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,17 and they handed him the scrol of the prophet Isaiah. Unrol ing the scrol he found the place where it iswritten:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,18 The spirit of the Lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He hassent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.19 to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord.
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.20 He then rol ed up the scrol , gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him.
And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.21 Then he began to speak to them, 'This text is being fulfilled today even while you are listening.'
And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?22 And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from hislips. They said, 'This is Joseph's son, surely?'
And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.23 But he replied, 'No doubt you will quote me the saying, "Physician, heal yourself," and tel me, "We have heard al that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own country." '
And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.24 And he went on, 'In truth I tel you, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.
But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;25 'There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah's day, when heaven remained shut forthree years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land,
But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.26 but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a town in Sidonia.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.27 And in the prophet Elisha's time there were many suffering from virulent skin-diseases in Israel, butnone of these was cured -- only Naaman the Syrian.'
And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,28 When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged.
And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.29 They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hilltheir town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff,
But he passing through the midst of them went his way,30 but he passed straight through the crowd and walked away.
And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.31 He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath.
And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.32 And his teaching made a deep impression on them because his word carried authority.
And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and he shouted at thetop of his voice,
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.34 'Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who youare: the Holy One of God.'
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.35 But Jesus rebuked it, saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!' And the devil, throwing the man into themiddle, went out of him without hurting him at all.
And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.36 Astonishment seized them and they were al saying to one another, 'What is it in his words? He givesorders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.'
And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.37 And the news of him travel ed al through the surrounding countryside.
And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.38 Leaving the synagogue he went to Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in the grip of ahigh fever and they asked him to do something for her.
And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.39 Standing over her he rebuked the fever and it left her. And she immediately got up and began to servethem.
Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.40 At sunset al those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them tohim, and laying his hands on each he cured them.
And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.41 Devils too came out of many people, shouting, 'You are the Son of God.' But he warned them andwould not al ow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.42 When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look forhim, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them,
And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.43 but he answered, 'I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do.'
And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.44 And he continued his proclamation in the synagogues of Judaea.
